DAY 4: TUESDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER
MONTSERRAT MOUNTAIN RETREAT
On arrival at Barcelona airport we will be met
and transferred to our centrally located hotel.
This evening we will celebrate our first Mass
together.
Barcelona overnight (D)
The spirit of Montserrat is a unique blend of
the mountain, the sanctuary, and the life of
monasticism. Around the sanctuary you will find
many different banners and emblems representing
various religious, cultural, social, financial and
even sporting organisations.
Our spectacular day of pilgrimage begins with a
visit and Mass in the Basilica, the construction
of which began in the 16th century, and a
viewing of the beautiful Holy Image of Our
Lady of Montserrat, known affectionately as the
“Black Madonna.”
We will then board the Santa Cova funicular
railway and after a short ride, enjoy a walk down
the sacred path passing modernist sculptures
of the Mysteries of the Rosary (all worked on
by Llimona and Gaudi among others). Almost

DAY 3: MONDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER
BARCELONA / GRANOLLERS /
MONTSERRAT
We enjoy a morning in Barcelona to experience
the cultural canvas that underpinned many
of Picasso’s artworks and view the unique
and colourful architecture of Antonio Gaudi
dispersed throughout the city. We commence
with a visit and Mass in Barcelona Cathedral
(La Seu), a celebrated example of Catalan Gothic
architecture dating from the 14th century. The
elevated site occupied by the cathedral has
always been the spiritual centre of Barcelona.
We will be awe-struck visiting Gaudi’s famous
La Sagrada Familia Basilica before enjoying a
leisurely visit to Guell Park where we can enter
Gaudi’s house which is now a museum as well
as offering spectacular views over the city.
Later this afternoon we will travel to the outskirts
of Barcelona where we visit Granollers, the
birthplace of Bishop Martin Griver, the second
Bishop of Perth.
Before dinner we will arrive into stunning
Montserrat. On his very last visit to Spain,
Bishop Salvado visited the Monastery here. The
renowned eleventh-century sanctuary of Our
Lady of Montserrat lies at the top of a 4000
foot high mountain and is one of Spain’s most
popular pilgrimage destinations. The shrine is
home to a twelfth-century miraculous statue
of Montserrat was found by young shepherds
in the 13th century after seeing a bright light
which led them to the grotto. We take time
here at the Holy Cave for prayer and reflection
before taking the funicular railway back up to
the Sanctuary.
Before lunch, we will take our place among the
privileged to hear the heavenly sounds of the
Montserrat Boys Choir (The Escolania), one
of the oldest and most renowned in Europe.
After lunch we will have a private guided tour of
the museums and the Basilica.
The remainder of the afternoon will provide the
option of time for rest and prayerful reflection.
Before dinner, we will have an opportunity to
join the Benedictine monks in the Basilica for
the beautiful sounds of evening Vespers.
Montserrat overnight (BD)
DAY 5: WEDNESDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER
MONTSERRAT TO LOURDES (VIA
MANRESA)
After an early breakfast we farewell Montserrat
and travel to the nearby town of Manresa where
St Ignatius came on retreat for eleven months
between 1522 and 1523. Each day he spent
seven hours in prayer in a cave and then helped
the sick in the village with the time he had left
over. Here too Ignatius began to develop the
method for seeking God’s will and where he
wrote his renowned Spiritual Exercises. We
come as pilgrims to this amazing place with St
Ignatius and pray in the actual cave where his
life and spirituality developed.
Later we travel through the scenic foothills of
the Pyrenees, crossing into Southern France
before continuing on to Lourdes. It was in this
small town that Our Lady first appeared to St
Bernadette in 1858.
Lourdes overnight (BD)
DAY 6: THURSDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER
LOURDES
We celebrate an International Mass this
morning with pilgrims worldwide in the
immense Underground Basilica of Pius X
Lourdes

little village of Bartres, and the farm where St
Bernadette was nursed and later returned in
adolescence to help her foster mother. We will
visit the Sheepfold and the Parish Church
where she spent so many hours in prayer.
We will return to Lourdes to enjoy a peaceful
afternoon to rest or wander at your own pace or
take the time to pray the Stations of the Cross
with the life sized copper images which overlook
the holy Grotto. Spend some quiet time perhaps
reflecting at the Grotto with its chapel built over
the place of the apparitions.
Optional Blessed Sacrament Procession and
evening candlelight procession.

DAY 7: FRIDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER
LOURDES
This morning we will celebrate a group Mass
at the Grotto before meeting our guide for
a walking tour of Lourdes including the
Sanctuary area: Upper & Lower Basilicas,
the Grotto, and the Baths where hundreds of
miraculous cures have taken place. Continue
our visit of the main sites associated with St
Bernadette including the Boly Mill where she
was born in 1844, the original parish church
and the Cachot (prison) where the family was
forced to live due to misfortune during the time
of the apparitions.
Free time this afternoon for a visit and prayers
for the sick at the miraculous Baths where
the water has continued to flow since 1858.
Pilgrims may choose to submerge themselves
in the healing waters, or collect the Lourdes
water at the taps. During her ninth apparition
to Bernadette, Our Lady said “Go drink and
wash yourself at the spring”. Optional afternoon
Blessed Sacrament Procession and Blessing
of the Sick before a final evening candlelight
procession after dinner.
Note: Washing at the baths is a personally
rewarding experience and is carried out in a discreet
manner with the process being very respectful of
one’s privacy.

DAY 8: SATURDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER
VIA LOYOLA TO BURGOS
We farewell the City of Mary and travel west
along the Pyrenees mountains before crossing
into northern Spain. We come to the tranquil
valley and village of Loyola, home to St Ignatius,
founder of the Jesuits. Visit the Sanctuary for
Mass; the magnificent Basilica adjoins the 13th
century Tower House where Ignatius was born
and later found his conversion. Our pilgrimage
here will include the wonderful ‘diorama’ of the
saint’s life.
We continue journeying west for a sneak
preview of what is to come on the Pilgrims Road
as we come to Burgos, famous for its beautiful
Cathedral established in 1221 - one of the jewels
of Gothic architecture. We end our day here
with a guided tour of the Cathedral.
Burgos overnight (BD)
DAY 9: SUNDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER
EL CAMINO (VIA LEON TO SANTIAGO
DE COMPOSTELA)
The Road to Compostela comes out of the past
and stretches through a thousand year history of
the pilgrim’s journey. During the Middle Ages
the Shrine of St. James became the number one
pilgrimage site outside of Rome. According to
tradition, St. James the Apostle travelled to Spain
in 40 AD to spread the Gospel to the far west. He
died a martyr after returning to Jerusalem. His
remains were brought back to Spain and are today
held in the high altar of the Cathedral. Countless
pilgrims have made the journey from Madrid
to the Pyrenees to Compostela along an historic
path which has changed little since the time of
the beginnings around the year 1000. Despite
wars, floods and famine through the ages, the Old
Pilgrim’s Way has survived and at its end Santiago
de Compostela has earned the distinction of being a
true pilgrimage destination. Modern day pilgrims
who walk this sacred road become, whether they
know it or not, a part of history.
Journey west then to Leon where we will stand
inside the famous Cathedral and gaze breathless
at the air glowing with colour streaming from its
182 stained glass windows. Celebrate our group
Mass here.
Late afternoon we will begin to catch sight of
the spires of the Cathedral of Santiago, these
days surrounded by the bustling, new city of
Santiago de Compostela. We will pass through
the city’s walls and under the Arch of Obispo
drawing us into the great square.
Santiago de Compostela overnight (BD)
DAY 10: MONDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER
SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
This morning we will visit and celebrate Mass
at the Cathedral of St James, one of the finest
examples of architecture in all of Europe. As
pilgrims we have the opportunity to climb the
stairs behind the high altar to visit the crypt
where the relics of St James are preserved,
touch the central pillar (Portico de La Gloria),
view the ‘botafumeiro’ and admire the wealth
of medieval art inside the Cathedral, before
visiting the cloister museum.
Nearby we enjoy a visit to the former Monastery
of San Martin Pinario, where Dom Rosendo
had made his monastic profession.
Afternoon at leisure.
The City of the Apostle is full of historical buildings
and other attractions and is thus the ideal place for
a quiet unhurried walk of discovery through streets,
squares and nooks, to be taken as a reward for the
effort of reaching this city of St James.
Santiago de Compostela overnight (BD)
DAY 11: TUESDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER
TUI PILGRIMAGE
Departing the City of St James, we travel south
today by coach to the Diocese of Tui-Vigo,
which our Archdiocese has a connection with
through the World Youth Days.
The town of Tui is the birthplace of Bishop
Rosendo Salvado. Here we visit the astonishing
Cathedral of Tui, the Convent of Santo
Domingo (Saint Dominic) and the Carmelite
Convent; where Sister Lucia (one of the three
children of Fatima) lived and where in 1929 the
Blessed Mother appeared to her, to request the
consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart.

museum containing many personal items of
Sister Lucia. Other sites in this beautiful town
that we shall visit will be the University of
Coimbra (the oldest university in Portugal)
and the Church of the Holy Cross, where St
Anthony of Padua became a priest.

Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three children
as ‘a lady in white’.

along the beautiful Way of the Cross (the
Sacred Way) culminating in the Chapel of
Calvary which overlooks all of Fatima. Continue
to Valinhos, the site of Our Lady’s appearance
after the children’s return from prison before
we proceed onto the little village of Aljustrel to
visit the homes where the children lived. Finally
we enter the original Parish church and see the
Baptismal font where the children were baptised.
Back in Fatima tonight, the Anniversary
Vigil ceremonies begin with an International
Rosary followed by a candlelight procession and
concelebrated Mass on the steps of the Rosary
Basilica. From midnight to dawn an optional all
night vigil is held for the enrichment of pilgrims.

FATIMA ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
We awake to the sound of pilgrims from all over

altar on the steps of the Basilica. Celebrate
the extraordinary International Anniversary
Mass followed by the Blessing of the Sick and
Consecration. The ceremonies will close around
midday with the touching ‘Adios’ spectacle
(waving of the white handkerchiefs in tribute to
Our Lady) as her statue is carried back to the
Capelinha.
We will then enjoy a tour of the Square (the
largest square in Christendom) including the
site of the Apparitions, Rosary Basilica with
the Tombs of the visionaries, the Museum,
Blessed Sacrament Chapel and other main
sites.
Afternoon at leisure in Fatima.

Anthony was born and grew up in Lisbon and
today remains the patron saint of lost articles.
Visit the World Heritage listed Jeronimo’s
Monastery dating back to the 16th century with
its stunning combination of flamboyant Gothic,
Moorish and early Renaissance influences; see
