I think it’s important for kids to have gardening and cooking. I think this is important because nowadays most kids - if
you asked them - would say that they don’t know how to cook or they have never gardened before. People are losing
their roots. Back before there were supermarkets and farmers mass produced beef and other foods, everyone knew
how to farm, it was just a part of daily life. But now, since people don’t need to farm billions of families grow up and
become adults without setting foot in a garden. Soon people won’t do anything but sit around in their houses. They
won’t know how to do anything. This is why I think gardening and cooking is important. And CitySprouts is a great
way to do this. You can get out and enjoy life and be around nature, you never know what amazing things you could
discover.

The summer before middle school was filled with early mornings at the garden and afternoons picnicking
under the shade of a tree. I learned about new plants and how they grow. It was so fun at the end of the
internship when all of the seeds we planted grew into vegetables and fruits. Summer at CitySprouts was like
being a family. Some people grew and picked plants while others cooked us a meal in the kitchen. I met new
friends and was introduced to the wonders of a garden. Now, I joined the cooking club at my school with
friends learning about new cultural foods.

After my last CitySprouts internship, I was inspired to grow herbs at home. Our backyard
didn’t have much sunlight, so we planted seeds like basil, fennel, chives and onions. Even though we had a
good harvest the herbs sadly died when winter came long. I’m looking forward to coming back to
CitySprouts to learn more and I hope other kids will learn to garden too.

My favorite thing about CitySprouts is how they have programs through the year. The summer
program, in my opinion, is one of the greatest programs and one of the best summer experiences I’ve
ever had. On top of gardening, we learned about the environment. One memory I had was going to the
farmers market, I got my picture taken and put into the Cambridge Chronicle with my name and
everything!!!! My favorite thing to do was doing the compost and preparing the food. Compost is
important because giving your food scraps back to the land can give your crops more
nutrients than money can buy.

I remember my early years at Morse School, my class would go out to the garden in the spring. Tasting different
vegetables and fruits would be the highlight of almost everyone’s day. The best time I’ve ever had was picking apples
and making apple cider, one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. In math class, we also measured pea growth. Now I am
once again connected to CitySprouts through the cooking club at school. I have made Tajine, a Moroccan dish with
squash, chickpeas and different Moroccan spices, and surprisingly, cinnamon. We’ve also made tabouli and cupcakes.
