Practice Leaflet - Minchinhampton Surgery

PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG)
Minchinhampton Surgery was one of the first in the
country to start its own Patient Group. The group has
been running for over 20 years. It aims to involve the
patients, staff and doctors in improving the services on
offer, improving communication and promoting health,
rather than treating sickness.
Every patient is automatically a member and we do need
your active assistance to continue the success. There is a
notice board in the surgery entrance, or you can ask any
member of staff for details.
RESEARCH
Our Practice takes part in medical research. The work is
undertaken in partnership with universities and other
organisations. Our objective is to improve all aspects of
Health Care. You may be invited to take part in a research
project. Your decision to accept or decline this invitation
will have no affect on your usual medical care.
Minchinhampton Surgery is part of the Clinical Practice
Research Database (CPRD). This collects data (
diagnoses, treatments, referrals and demographics)
electronically from active practices, but no data such as
NHS numbers, names, addresses or postcodes are sent).
Researchers will never know the identity of the patients,
GPs or practices that contribute. CPRD data is used for
approved, protocolised medical research including drug
and device safety, risk benefit, journey of care, health
services research and epidemiology.

APPOINTMENTS
TEST AND X-RAY RESULTS
PRACTICE STAFF
Appointments are for ten minutes each and for one patient
only. Double appointments are available on request for
more complex problems.
Please telephone for these results after 2.00pm. Because
of our duty to maintain confidentiality, you will be asked to
establish your identity before any information is given.
Similarly, results will not normally be given to a third party
for patients of 15 years and over.
The Practice has a team of Office and Reception Staff
who, apart from providing the first point of contact for
patients, also provide support for all the Practice’s healthcare professionals.
Morning requests for emergency appointments will be
triaged by Carol Stonham, Prescribing Nurse Practitioner.
Urgent problems will always be seen with the minimum of
delay.
BUDDY SYSTEM
Minchinhampton Surgery operates a ‘buddy system’
whereby on days that a GP partner is not available, their
buddy looks after urgent paperwork, test results and care.
Buddy pairs are as follows:
Dr Pouncey and Dr Simpson
Dr Weir and Dr le Roux
Dr Cain and Dr Xerri
REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS
Wherever possible please order all regular repeat items at
the same time. Patients may order on-line at
www.minchsurgery.nhs.uk (please register first at
Reception). Alternatively, return the right-hand-side
repeat-order slip of your prescription to the surgery when
you are ready to order. There is also a dedicated
prescription line open between 8.30 and 10.30am,
Monday to Friday tel: 8 8 9 6 7 8 . Please make sure you
have the correct name, dose and strength of the medicine
you require.
TELEPHONING THE DOCTOR
If you need to speak to a doctor, please ring before
10.30am and leave your number. The doctor will call you
back as soon as their work-load allows.
WHEN THE SURGERY IS CLOSED
If you have symptoms requiring immediate attention,
please contact the emergency service by dialling 111. The
out of hours service runs from a dedicated facility at
Stroud General Hospital. Patients needing emergency
treatment, will be asked to attend the Centre, unless too ill
to travel. Telephone advice from the duty doctor may also
be obtained.

HOME VISITS
Home visits are available for patients who are housebound or too ill to get to the Surgery. Please ring before
10.30am. Home visits do take a lot of time: the doctor may
ring you back to assess the urgency and appropriateness
of the request so that the most serious conditions can be
dealt with first.

return it to the Surgery. Up-to-date information can be
obtained from: www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk
OTHER SERVICES AVAILABLE
These include: Child vaccination, Respiratory and
Diabetic clinics, Minor Surgery, Contraceptive Services,
Coil Fitting, Contraceptive implants, Acupuncture, Anteand Post-Natal Care.
Mr. Adrian Lyster holds an acupuncture clinic every Friday
afternoon. As there is no longer NHS funding for this
clinic, it is reliant on voluntary donations by those able to
make a contribution to Minchinhampton Surgery Trust.
We are also fortunate to have the facilities to carry-out
ECGs and Sigmoidoscopies on the premises.
In addition, a full range of services is available from the
team of four practice nurses including smoking cessation
and dietary advice.
TEMPORARY RESIDENTS
We are pleased to see visitors to the area as Temporary
Residents. Such patients should make an appointment in
the normal way and complete the necessary form.
Overseas visitors may incur a charge if there is no NHS
agreement between their home country and the UK.
GP TRAINING
Minchinhampton Surgery participates in the advanced
training of experienced doctors who are seeking to
specialise in General Practice. Attachments of the GP
Registrars are usually for one year.
