Kids and Home, Reasons That
Motivated “Batam Women Build”
by Swasti TC
“When you look around and see kids
begging on the streets, families having
disability, and how that’s relating to kids’
future—you know—the poverty is just
heartbreaking,” answered Linda Sullivan
(62) when asked about the reason that
makes her motivated to help.

founder of “Batam Women
Build” (BWB). BWB is a
group, mostly consisting of
expatriate women living in
Batam that helps underprivileged

families to have decent homes.
There are only 12 (committed)
members of BWB, but they have a
lot of supporters who are ready to
help.
They raised money in many
ways. On March 1–2, they managed
a bazaar—bake sale—at PM Gallery
Indonesian Crafts, owned by its
member Sandra Kynoch (56).

“Yoga for Habitat” at Villa
Panbil, March 10, was another
one of their fundraising events,
where an auction was held. One
of their members, Daniela
Angius (33), made bracelets with
a house pendant and sold them
for IDR 50,000 each.
Money collected—from
those events and from an online
account at www.give2habitat.org
—was given to Habitat for
Humanity Indonesia (HfH Indonesia) through the branch in
Batam. That fund was enough to
build 1 house in Senjulung Baru
lot, Kabil village, Nongsa subdistrict, Batam for a chosen
family. The handover is scheduled

for April 5.
The volunteers joined the build
on March 13 and 15. Though the
weather was hot—it hasn’t rained
for almost 3 months—the volunteers kept up their enthusiasm
during the build. Bending iron bars,
assembling columns, and constructing bricks were some of the
construction jobs they did. Jemi (50)
and Sri (43), the home partner
whose house the volunteers helped
build, assisted with the construction
too.
volunteers embraced each other.
“Wow, this is so amazing. We’re from
all over the world here, USA, UK,
Australia, France, Indonesia, Netherlands, and other countries I
haven’t mentioned. You guys are
so amazing. I enjoy being a part of
this,” said Linda, at the end of the
build day. Some of them became
emotional and shed tears. They
will continue helping people
through HfH Indonesia.

them even had to work part-time
for months.
From March 3 until 13, they
had been doing a lot of activities,
from mixing cement to painting
just build a house, they alsointeracted with the community, especially with the family whose house
was being built. “They’re excited
and did not complain about the
work, even though it’s very hot in
here,” said Agung Suhardoko (46),
our home partner.
“These students came from
Japan to Yogyakarta with a sincere
heart to help families, not only in
material but also through their
resources. I am so touched by their
spirit of helping. They don’t know
us but they have the desire to help,”

said Bambang DS, one of the community leaders in the Jogoyudan
village.
Apart from the build, they
were also introduced to Indonesia
through Javanese culture in Yogyakarta. They went to Sogan village,
where they learned how to make
batik, and visited Alun-alun Kidul.
to have a better home. But, in fact I have
a chance to get to know them deeper
and I’m grateful for that,” said Kei Ijima,
Doshisha’s team leader.
Where there’s a myth, if they can
walk straight through two banyan
trees with eyes closed. Whatever the
wishes, will become true.
One of the volunteers, Mai
Yamakawa shared her philosophy,
“It’s true that they are poor, but they
seem happy and I’m glad to have a
chance to meet them. Through this
experience, I’m able to see that
wealth is not everything. This is my
