Statistics Continue to Show Low Crime Rates
MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Visibility, proactive enforcement and thorough and
complete investigation were key components in keeping crime rates low in the
third quarter of 2104 according to City of Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Greg
Wilson in a presentation to the City Council.
“Some of the highlights achieved by the department through the third quarter
include TASER Replacement, Washington State Patrol ACCESS Audit,
Commanders Hansen and Pickard were accepted to attend the FBI National
Academy, National Night Out, and security fencing funded by a Washington
Cities Insurance Authority Risk Reduction Grant,” reported Chief Wilson.
The Police Department responded to 10,045 calls for service in the third quarter
of 2014. The patrol and traffic divisions continued their visible presence through
traffic enforcement, conducting 6,220 traffic stops, which is an increase of 3%
over last year. Of the 6,220 traffic stops, officers issued 3,424 traffic infractions.
The police department investigated 210 traffic collisions, or an average of .8
collisions per day.
“There was a slight increase in property crimes,” reported Deputy Police Chief
Pete Caw. “We are addressing this issue by stopping and talking to people to see
what they know, collaborating with various agencies, using a regional intelligence
group to locate problem areas, and sharing information within shifts. People can
do their part by keeping vehicles locked and not leaving anything in them to
tempt thieves.”
The police department’s enforcement efforts continue to have an effect on the
number of criminal/civil filings through Snohomish County District Court. “We
have had 2,453 filings through the third quarter with revenue of $218,451, which
puts us on track to meet or exceed last year’s totals,” said Deputy Chief Caw.
“We’re not in business to make money, but every dollar recovered is one less
dollar that we need to do business.”
The Department’s Code Enforcement, Parking Enforcement, and Animal Control
programs continue to contribute to the overall appearance and image of the city,
an important component for future commercial and residential redevelopment
and revitalization.
