Hospice Aide (CNA and HHA) Drive-In Monday, October 27, 2014 Taking Care of Patients – Taking Care of Ourselves: Professional Development Day for Hospice Aides Designed specifically for Hospice Aides, this day will provide a variety of opportunities for professional development. Participants will learn about caring for patients with advanced heart disease, learn about select bodily systems and functions and how they change at the end of life and about how to manage their own stress and anxiety so that they provide the best care possible to patients and families. These important learning experiences, coupled with opportunities to network and spend time with peers, will provide a robust day of learning! Participants begin their day enjoying morning refreshments with colleagues and then attending the conference’s opening plenary featuring nurse, advocate and superstar Naomi Judd! Following her presentation, participants gather to begin their day together; please see the schedule below. 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM Morning Refreshments 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM Opening Plenary with Naomi Judd Surviving and Thriving in Challenging Times Using her own touching personal stories and unique brand of humor, Naomi will share her journey of being both a patient (as a Hepatitis C survivor) and a caregiver (as a former nurse early in her life). Participants will learn about the “Eight Characteristics of a Survivor” and have an opportunity to consider these characteristics for their own lives and work/life balance. 10:15 AM – 11:45 AM Learning Session I with Kay Mueggenburg, PhD, RN, CHPN Taking Care of Patients: Advanced Heart Disease Learn the pathophysiology of advanced heart disease, common symptoms that accompany the disease and how it is experienced by patients and families. Learn how to respond in ways that can reduce distress and increase comfort. 11:45 AM – Noon Pick up Complimentary Boxed Lunch Noon – 1:15 PM National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals (NCHPP) Nurse/CNA Sections’ Meeting (with complimentary boxed lunch) Meet fellow Hospice Aides (CNAs, HHAs) and discuss the important work that you do caring for patients and families. Learn about the National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals and how you can become involved. 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM Learning Session II with Kay Mueggenburg, PhD, RN, CHPN Taking Care of Patients: Nutrition, Hydration, Digestion and Elimination Learn about changes in these important bodily systems and functions as disease progresses and death nears. Most importantly, learn how you can respond helpfully to minimize patient discomfort and provide the best care to patients and their family members. 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM Learning Session III with Kay Mueggenburg, PhD, RN, CHPN Listening to and Caring for Ourselves How well do you listen to and care for yourself? If you are like most people, you take better care of patients than you do of yourself! Learn the importance of selfcare and identify ways in which you can take as good care of yourself as you do of patients! 4:15 PM – 5:00 PM Memorial Service NCHPP’s annual Memorial Service provides time to honor and pay tribute to hospice and palliative professionals and volunteers who have died in the past year. You are invited to participate in this inspirational time of remembrance to celebrate the important lives of our colleagues. 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM Welcome Reception with Exhibitors Finish off this great day of learning experiences with a showcase of the latest products and services for the hospice and palliative care industry.
