Biography – Dr. Dae Sung Lee

Dr. Dae Sung Lee had served for the past ten years as an Executive Director of the
Aeronautics Innovative Technology Laboratory at Korea Aerospace Research Institute,
managing all aeronautics development programs. Dr. Lee holds a Ph.D. degree in
mechanical engineering from the Iowa State University, and M.S. degree and B.S. degree
in mechanical engineering from Seoul National University. His technical expertise
encompasses the propulsion systems including the aero gas turbine engine systems, the
liquid rocket engine systems as well as the aircraft systems. Prior to joining the KARI in
1991, he had been employed as a Senior Scientist at Avco Research Laboratory, Textron,
mainly working on the numerical analysis of the turbine. Since joining KARI, he has
been mostly responsible for the development of new propulsion systems for aircrafts and
rockets before being in charge of managing all aeronautics development programs.
Dr. Lee has been the key leader of more than 40 national projects and published more
than 220 papers, and made significant contribution to fostering the foundation in the area
of aerospace propulsion. He has led the development of various gas turbine systems and
successfully completed the development of first liquid rocket engine in Korea. His latest
accomplishment is the Korean Helicopter Program, specially the development of dual-use
core components. His efforts are also expanded to the various National programs such as
the development of med-sized civil regional passenger aircrafts as well as the
fundamental aeronautics technologies. He is also serving numerous technical and R&D
policy making committees.
Dr. Lee served as a President of Korean Society of Propulsion Engineers and a
President of Korean Society of Fluid Machinery. He also served as a Vice President of
Korean Society of Aeronautics and Space Sciences. In recognition of his outstanding
contribution, he received numerous awards including the Technical Excellence Award
from Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences and the National Decoration.
In 2003, he received one of the most prestigious engineering awards in Korea, the Young
Engineer of the Year from National Academy of Engineering of Korea.
