POSITION SPECIFICATION POSITION TITLE: President and Chief Executive Officer REPORTING TO: The Association Board of Directors LOCATION: Lansing, Michigan THE CLIENT: Michigan Nonprofit Association www.mnaonline.org The Michigan Nonprofit Association was incorporated in 1990 as the Michigan Nonprofit Forum, and was originally a think-tank dedicated to discussing issues impacting nonprofit organizations. In 1994, it was renamed the Michigan Nonprofit Association, and was to provide direct advocacy and services to local nonprofit organizations. It currently is the collective voice of Michigan’s nonprofit organizations. MNA operates on two campuses, and serves as a statewide network for the sector, a resource center on effective management practices, and as an advocate for the nonprofit community. Michigan Nonprofit Association’s Mission is to serve nonprofits to advance their missions. The Vision is to be a vital leader in building and sustaining thriving communities. There are currently more than 850 members from across the State. Dues for nonprofits are set on a sliding scale based on budget size, and range from $80 to $1100. The operating budget for MNA is $5.6 million. Position Specification President and Chief Executive Officer Page 2 of 4 SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The President will report directly to the Association Board, and will have primary responsibility for the leadership of the Association, including day-to-day operations. More specifically, responsibilities will include the following primary areas: Leadership: The President and Chief Executive Officer will be the administrator and primary public spokesman for the Association. He/She will, in conjunction with the Directors, establish and execute the goals and strategic vision of the organization. The President and Chief Executive Officer will be the primary liaison between the Association staff and the Association Chairperson and Directors, and will represent the Association at meetings of professional, civic and service organizations, building relationships to other organizations throughout the State. He/She will continue a high level of national connectivity and visibility; provide a strategic vision for the future, especially with respect to funding stability; preserve the strength of the current leadership team; and elevate MNA re: relevance/stature vis-à-vis public policy issues, including working with the Governor, State Legislature and local officials. Operations: The Association has a staff ranging from 30-50 employees. The President and Chief Executive Officer will lead, motivate and foster sound working relationships with this staff. He/She will have oversight of all of the tasks normally associated with running an organization of this type, including marketing and public relations; finance (preparing and maintaining budgets, supervising the preparation of financial statements and processes); legal and human resources (hiring, firing, discipline, training and development activities, and performance reviews and evaluations). The President and Chief Executive Officer will be the primary contact for the Association’s outside advisors, including accountants, consultants and lawyers. EXPERIENCE AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years’ experience in the leadership and management of a high profile organization, ideally where community improvement and better lives for families are part of its mission and/or purpose. Experience with nonprofit organization leadership, from a professional and/or volunteer basis, is desired. More specifically, this experience should include: A passion for community improvement, and an excellent ability to write and to speak in both small, private meetings and to larger audiences. Proficiency in the use of integrated information systems. A strong public policy background. Skill and effectiveness relative to fund-source development and expansion. Familiarity with the State of Michigan. A track record as a “builder,” with credibility, high ethics and impeccable personal and professional integrity. Enthusiasm for the objectives of the Association, and an engaging leadership quality, with a demeanor consistent with pursuing, cultivating and nurturing relationships with an array of personalities and social strata. EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required; a related master’s degree is preferred. COMPENSATION A comprehensive, competitive compensation package will be provided.
