MILITARY CHRISTIAN CONFERENCE 2014 BOOKLET WHY MEET? Back in 2010, an enterprising LAC from Whenuapai decided we needed to get NZDF Christians together to encourage and strengthen us as a group. Jim gathered up as many MCF people as he could and with his merry band (he literally brought a happy worship band with him) ran a conference in the Navy Lodge at Ohakune. It was great to network with other believers, encourage one another and discuss issues from a common spiritual perspective. The conference ran for another three years, but it was a challenge for MCF personnel to organise it while working full time. Military Life (formerly Military Ministry, a sub-ministry of Tandem Ministries) recognised the value of the getting military Christians together and offered to work with MCF to develop the conference for 2014. The goals of the conference are to strengthen military Christians through teaching, worship, prayer and fellowship, and to develop networks within the NZDF that also help us when we’re back at work. WHY WHAKAMARU? We were looking for a venue that could accommodate and feed attendees, with the flexibility to have a small or large group, depending on final numbers. We wanted it to be away from work so people could feel more relaxed. We wanted it to be in an environment that also allows us to do things together that help strengthen relationships. MiCamp at Whakamaru provides all of that and while it is a bit of a drive for those in Wellington and further south, it is reasonably accessible for those out of the Manawatu and Auckland regions. THE SPEAKER We wanted a good communicator who had a strong military and ministry background, and would bring some different perspectives to consider. We also know this conference is a bit of a test case and so we wanted someone who would still come even if only a few people registered! This made Daryl Jones the perfect choice as he meets all the criteria and is chilled out enough to be happy to talk to many or a few. More on Daryl: Dr. Daryl P. Jones, Col, USAF (Ret.) Dr. Daryl “Bones” Jones is a full-time missionary with Cru Military, (formerly Military Ministry, Campus Crusade for Christ, International [CCCI]) and is Cru Military/Military Ministry’s International Director. He graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1982 and served for over 20 years as a fighter pilot and commander. In his spare time he completed a Masters of Science in Administration, a Masters of Divinity and a Doctorate of Ministry. In 2003, Daryl retired from the Air Force and has been in full time Christian work since, including pastoring a church in Japan, from which he undertook a mission trip to New Zealand. Daryl’s role as International Director of Military Ministry has him managing a team of international leaders covering the globe, and he is also personally developing Military Ministry’s work in Africa. Daryl’s extensive experience as a leader both in his professional military career and in ministry has given him an excellent understanding of the need for servant leadership. Daryl has been married to his best friend (and LTC, USAF [Ret.]), Martha, for 31 years and they have three children: 2Lt Phillip D. Jones, US Marine Corps; Joshua, a junior at Virginia Tech; and their daughter Zoe, currently a sophomore at Hampton Christian Academy. THE TOPIC Servant Leadership is a Biblically based leadership concept that has been around forever, best modelled by Jesus himself and articulated in English leadership literature in the mid-1960s by Robert K. Greenleaf, the founder of the Robert K. Greenleaf Centre for Servant-Leadership. As a concept it does not necessarily replace other leadership models, but rather focuses the priorities of a leader and as such has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of other leadership strategies. For Christians it challenges us to be better leaders in the work place and outside of it. This is why we chose the topic, Serving to Lead, as it has application in the military and beyond. THE CAMP MiCamp Whakamaru is on an island in the Waikato River, connected to Ongaroto Road by a narrow causeway. It is linked to MiCamp on Lake Taupo and is part of a network of camps run by the Brethren Church . The camp has excellent, but well used facilities, with plenty of rooms to spread out in, great meeting spaces and a peaceful surrounding environment being right on the river and close to some good walks. The camp has a resident chef who previously worked in restaurants and ran his own catering business. He prides himself in producing non-camp-like camp food. He also offered to cook any trout caught, so bring your fishing gear if that interests you! All eating utensils, etc. are provided, but you’ll need your own bedding and any sports gear you want to use. Walking – the camp is located midway between a 10km river walk, so you can get dropped off 5km or less either way and walk back, or do the whole 10km. One way is 5km of relatively easy and flat walking and the other is more up and down, so plenty of options. Sports – there is a sports field that you can play touch or soccer on. Swimming – there is a lagoon like area that people can swim in, and the river, of course… at your own risk. There are some camp activities that cost extra and require some pre- organisation. These include archery, kayaking, paintball (though that might be away from the camp), slug guns (not suitable for an AWQ…), a flying fox and climbing wall. If you feel you would especially like to do one of these, feel free to ask (email Al on [email protected]) and we’ll chat with the host about cost and availability of qualified instructors (required by OSH). REGISTRATION Registration has been made way easy by the staff at Tandem Ministries – simply go online to http://www.tandem.org.nz/events1/military-conference2014/ and fill out and submit the form. The cost is $140 per person with an early bird discount of $10 if you register and pay before 31 August. QUESTIONS If you have any questions, feel free to email Al at [email protected].
