The Benin Agency for Reconciliation and Development is an institution set up by the Government of Benin through the Executive Order N°2001-459 on Nov 5, 2001 to implement the resolutions of the International Leaders Conference on Reconciliation and Development. The Benin Agency for Reconciliation and Development is a public entity with social, cultural and scientific components and vested with a moral character and autonomous financing. The agency operates under the tutorship of the Minister of Culture, Literacy, Handicraft and Tourism. In order to contribute to the poverty reduction strategy, the Benin Agency for Reconciliation and Development is aiming at accelerating the country’s economic development and arouse the Black Diaspora’s interest in investing in the Benin’s economy. The agency is structured in Technical units and departments. Organize investigative, discovery and study trips to Benin from people of the black Diaspora for the purpose of obtaining their input for the general development plan for Africa and Benin in particular ; - Organize periodically the international Gospel and Roots Festival, the Voyage of Return and the Alabama-Benin Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum sessions in Benin ; - Organize periodically the International Cultural Trade Fair between the Black Diaspora and Africa in rotation with the Gospel Festival ; - Organize every year the pilgrimage of the Black Diaspora to Benin ; - Contribute to production of educational materials, on the slave trade and slavery, in conjunction with all entities and skilful resource persons ; - Design and implement an awareness program on the Reconciliation process for the interior of Benin. THE PURPOSE AND VISION ACTIONS IMPLEMENTED FROM 2001 TROUGH 2011 The main purpose of the Benin Agency for Reconciliation and Development is contribute to the involvement of the Black Diaspora in the process Benin’s economic development. It’s vision is to become a database to address economic issues and powerful tool designed to back up investment initiatives from the Black Diaspora in Benin and in Africa as a whole. OUR FOCUS POINTS - Election of Benin to the Millennium Challenge Account U.S program utilizing lobbying of the U.S Senate and Congress through contacts with African-Americans; - The International Gospel Festival was held five (5) times. Among the attendants were mainly the artists, choirs and renowned music bands from African and the United States ; - Passing of the House Joint Resolution 25 by the Alabama State Legislature forming the Alabama-Benin Economic Forum; and organizing many sessions of the Forum in Benin; - Putting the Reconciliation Memorial on the Reconciliation Boulevard and the “Gate of Return” on the Marina of Cotonou This same memorial can be seen in Liverpool, England and Richmond, VA (USA) to testify of the triangular slave trade that was undertaken among the three continents (Europe, Africa, and America); - The BARD taking the initiative for signing the sister-city agreement between the City of Cotonou and the City of Tuskegee, Al on Dec 22, 2011; - Signing the MOU between the BARD and the City of Tuskegee, Al on Dec 29, 2011 for coordinating the International Municipal Collaboration, designing and follow-up the sistercity agreements between the municipalities of Benin and the cities of the entire Black Diaspora, utilizing the State of Alabama as a pilot-demonstration project. We are strategically poised to:  Plan and follow up the activities resulted from the International Conference of Leaders for Reconciliation and Development held in Cotonou in December 1999 ;  Identify strategies, actions and projects to assist people of the black Diaspora to find their lost identity and to assist them in contributing to the building of Africa in general and the Republic of Benin in particular ;  Promote the Republic of Benin in general and the process of Reconciliation in particular throughout the entire black Diaspora in the world. Elle est placée sous l’autorité du Ministère de la Culture, de l’Alphabétisation, de l’Artisanat et du Tourisme. Pour contribuer à la réduction de la pauvreté, l’Agence est née pour accélérer le développement économique du Bénin et susciter les intérêts de la Diaspora Africaine à y investir. Sa vision est de devenir une plate forme économique et un puissant instrument d’accompagnement des investissements de la Diaspora en République du Bénin en particulier et de l’Afrique en général. NOTRE RAISON D’ETRE - planifier et suivre les activités retenues lors de la Conférence Internationale des Leaders pour la Réconciliation et le Développement tenue à Cotonou en décembre 1999 ; - identifier les stratégies, les actions et les projets qui permettront aux Noirs de la diaspora de retrouver leur identité perdue et de contribuer à la construction de l’Afrique en général et de la République du Bénin en particulier ; - promouvoir le Bénin et le processus de la réconciliation dans le monde atlantique à savoir l’Afrique, les Amériques, les Caraïbes et l’Europe ainsi que l’Océan indien ; - Eligibilité du Bénin au Millenium Challenge Account obtenue grâce au lobbying du Sénat et du Congrès américains créé par les échanges avec les afro-américains ; - Tenue au Bénin de cinq (05) éditions du Festival International "Gospel et Racines" qui regroupe des artistes, chorales et groupes musicaux de renom tant africains qu’afroaméricains ; - Vote par le Parlement d’Alabama de la Résolution HJR 25 ; - Organisation au Bénin de plusieurs éditions du Forum d’Affaires et de Coopération Economique Alabama-Bénin ; - L’installation de la statue de la Réconciliation sur l’axe de la Réconciliation et de la « PORTE DU RETOUR » sur la Marina à Cotonou.
