Professor Adele Diamond
Canada Research Chair in
Developmental Cognitive
Neuroscience
University of British Columbia
One of the world’s leading
researchers on the development of
executive functions
Topic Overview:
Executive functions (EFs) include working memory, inhibitory control,
and cognitive flexibility. They make possible: mentally playing with ideas;
thinking before acting; resisting temptations; staying focused; problemsolving; and meeting novel, unanticipated challenges. The most effective
way to improve EFs is to nourish the whole child by addressing their
cognitive, social, emotional, and physical needs. Diverse activities have
been shown to improve children’s EFs at any age. This not only leads to
better academic outcomes but also leads to reduced incidence or severity
of mental health disorders.
By the end of this 1 day conference participants will be able to:
• Define EFs and their importance to academic achievement and lifelong success;
• Understand how EFs impact learning, behaviour, and social
emotional function in children and teens;
• Identify the genetic, developmental, environmental, and biological
influences;
• Recognize potential strategies for developing and improving EFs.

Dr. Adele Diamond is the Canada Research Chair
in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience at the
University of British Columbia. She is one of the
world’s leading researchers on the development
of the cognitive functions that rely on a region
of the brain known as the ‘prefrontal cortex’.
Collectively called ‘executive functions’ these
include self-control, self-regulation and cognitive
flexibility. Since 1980, she has studied these
cognitive functions from their earliest beginnings
in infancy throughout peoples’ lifespans. Her
research has shown that cognitive control
abilities, such as selective attention and selfregulation, can be improved through training and practice; however, they can be
affected by a variety of experiences. Dr. Diamond is a recipient of many awards,
and she has appeared on television shows as well as been featured in several
newspaper articles.
