LANAKILA KUPUNA NEWS 1640 Lanakila Ave., Honolulu, HI 96817 Telephone: (808) 847-1322 October 2014 A program of Catholic Charities Hawai’i funded in part by the State Executive Office on Aging (EOA) via contract with EOA and the C&C of Honolulu, Elderly Affairs Division Message from Dianne Lim - Program Coordinator: October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Did you know that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime? Did you know that every year, more than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes and that children exposed to domestic violence at home are more likely to have health problems? According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families. (Source: http://www.safehorizon.org). There is help out there. To learn more about domestic violence online, go to the Domestic Violence Action Center: http://www.domesticviolenceactioncenter.org/. Did you see the new, lovingly landscaped entrance? Did you see the beautifully painted walls and windows or notice that the stage on the lanai is no longer PINK?! On September 27th and October 11th, a total of over 200 employees from First Hawaiian Bank (FHB) put in countless hours of back-breaking work to transform the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center! We want to extend a very heartfelt MAHALO to the hard-working volunteers from First Hawaiian Bank’s Community Care project who gave the Center a much-needed “facelift” with so much aloha. Thank you soooo much! (See photos.) Last, but definitely not least, it’s my pleasure to welcome on board our new Program Specialist, Justin Trubiani. On behalf of the volunteers and staff of the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, we wish you all good health and lasting peace of mind! This weather has been extremely hot, so please make sure that you drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Dehydration is serious and can cause medical complications. With that in mind, come and join us for another session in keeping active, fit, and healthy. Brandy Ching, from Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., will present Part II on “Smart Food Choices for Healthy Aging” and “Simple Exercises & Physical Activities”. Also on our agenda, we welcome back Michael Hirano from Project Dana, who will educate us on “Fall Prevention and Functions of Project Dana. Falls can change the quality of an elder’s life in an instant. Learn some simple steps to prevent falls in the home and community. Members celebrating their birthdays in October are in for a treat. A musical group called the Small World Harmonica Band, led by Robert Omura, will showcase their skills with the harmonica. I’m sure our members will have a great time singing and humming along with the soothing sounds of the harmonica. Best wishes to all of our birthday celebrants, especially our 90+ honorees Mae Kuboyama, Masato Matsui, and Dorothy Saito. On October 27th a special guest speaker, Nedielyn Bueno from the State of Hawaii Office of Elections, will do a presentation on Voter Education. General Election is Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Remember: “No Vote No Grumble.” Last but not least, a slate of Officers and Special Committee nominations for the year 2015 will be presented to the members for their review and acceptance. EVENTS: 10/6 – Kaiser Foundation / Brandy Ching 10/20 – Birthday / Small World Harmonica Band 10/13 – Project Dana/Mike Hirano 10/27 – Office of Elections Okinawan Nenchosha Club by Irene Yamashita “Kupuna Safety” was the topic of HPD Officers Espiritu and Uganiza from the Kalihi Station on Sept. 4. It was another reminder that too many of our elderly pedestrians are at risk on our streets as well as being victims of identity theft, frauds, etc. It was a good reminder of the ways we can exercise extra care even in our own homes. Sept. 11, being the anniversary of the tragedy in New York, we observed a moment of silence to begin the morning. A Variety Show entertained us, thanks to Elsie Kawamoto’s talented group of karaoke singers. Adding to the anticipation of each number was the giving of gift cards to a few lucky members who met the singer’s requirement, e.g. someone whose birthday was closest to Sept. 11, the couple who was married the longest (60+ years), someone coming from the same prefecture as the singer, etc. It was a fun morning! Birthdays were celebrated on Sept. 18 by eight celebrants with special honoree David Young who was 89 years “young”. God bless all our September babies with many more happy birthdays. We were treated to a special morning by Aloha Tofu and President Paul Uyehara who briefly explained the history of the company before actually showing us step-by-step how tofu is made. By the time his presentation was done, we were able to sample the freshly made tofu. Delicious!! Samples of soy milk and deep fried tofu were distributed throughout his presentation. Thank you Paul Uyehara, wife Misa, and Aloha Tofu for your generosity! On Sept. 25 the Nankuranaisha Group entertained us with koto, drum and sanshin accompanying dancers fully dressed in cultural kimonos from Okinawa and Yamaguchi Prefecture (Japan). Before the program, President Seichi Yagi of Nomura-Ryu Ongaku Kyo Kai presented Yoshiharu Tengan of the Nenchosha Club with a Certificate of Appreciation for his many years of service. Ippe Nihei Debiru to Mr. Yagi and his group for an awesome program. **** “Yesterday was an important part of today’s journey” EVENTS: 10/2-Brain Gym-Cindy Ogata 10/9-Paranku Club of Hawai‘i 10/16-Birthday-Marion’s Karaoke 10/23-Kupuna Care-Alzheimer’s 10/30-Hui Mele Ukulele-Nuuanu Baptist October 2014 Sun 5 Mon 6 Creative Writing (8 am) Library Annex Tues 7 Blood Pressure (9 am) 12 13 14 Wed Thurs Fri Sat 1 2 3 4 Excursion: Gourmet Lunch Club - Doraku (11:00 a.m.) Blood Pressure (9 am) 8 Program Committee Meeting (8:30 am) 45th Anniversary Planning Committee Meeting (10 am) 9 15 10 11 CENTER CLOSED First Hawaiian Bank Community Cares Cleanup Project: Part 2 16 17 18 Blood Pressure (9 am) 45th Anniversary Celebration (10 am) FCCH (8:30 am) NARFE (9:30 am) in Sewing Room 22 New Member Orientation (9 am) 23 24 25 29 30 Blood Pressure (9 am) 45th Planning Committee (10 am) 19 20 Creative Writing (8 am) Library Annex Blood Pressure (9 am) 26 27 Creative Writing (8 am) Library Annex 21 Rhythm & Life Chair-based Exercise (11 am) in Dance Studio 28 Blood Pressure (9 am) Blood Pressure (9 am) iPad Class with Brian Ito (1pm) Library Blood Pressure (9 am) Center Hours Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 3:00 pm Saturday (2x/month) 8:30 am - 11:30 am FCCH (8:30 am) WWII Filipino Vets (8:30 am) in Sewing Room Lanakila Multi - Purpose Senior Center 1640 Lanakila Avenue Honolulu, Hawaii 96817 31 Halloween Costume Contest & Potluck Party (11 am) Activity Room Center Staff Dianne Lim………..Program Coordinator Justin Trubiani……….
