If you have ever taken a walk along the west side of the river, from Knox United Church to the Meewasin Valley Authority Building, you have seen and perhaps touched or played on, a sculpture by Bill Epp. Bill (William) Harold Epp was born in Glenbush, Saskatchewan on June 12, 1930. He lived the typical life of a boy growing up in Saskatchewan at the time; working on the farm, riding horses and bikes, hunting gophers and picking Saskatoon berries. He graduated from Rosthern Junior College in 1948, and attended Teachers' College in Saskatoon. He taught at several rural schools in Saskatchewan before returning to the University of Saskatchewan to study art. He received a scholarship to study with A. Y. Jackson, a member of the Group of Seven. After graduating from the University of Manitoba, he moved to Saskatoon to teach at Howard Coad School and the Saskatoon Technical School. A few years later, Bill was invited to teach sculpture at the University of Saskatchewan. He retired in 1993. Throughout his life, Bill developed his skill as a sculptor. He studied sculpture in India, Africa, South America, Europe, and Russia. Although Bill was very well known as a sculptor, it is also clear that he had a profound effect on all those that he met, and particularly on his students. There are sculptors all over the world who remember and cherish him as a teacher and mentor. He had a way of saying very little, but saying so much in the little that he said. He lived a simple life, but touched many very profoundly. Here in Saskatoon, Bill Epp's sculptures can be seen many places. The girl and her dog at Victoria School, the Governor General Ray (Ramon) Hnatyshyn across the street from Knox United Church, the statue of Gabriel Dumont in Friendship Park, and the Spirit of Youth, which was commissioned for the 1989 Jeux Canada Games. There are others as well. This memorial scholarship is dedicated to the life and work of an exceptional artist and exceptional teacher.
