INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY - ERP HALF YEARLY, 2014 www.robertwalters.com.au MARKET UPDATE NSW OVERVIEW In the IT ERP sector in Sydney in the first half of 2014, the SAP, Oracle and BI markets were more buoyant than in 2013, due to a significant increase in the volume of approved projects. As a result, there was a lot of movement at the senior management level across NSW. However, there were also a number of companies that made redundancies across Australia that affected NSW, particularly within the oil and mining industries. There was a move to offshore a number of areas in the SAP space and this lead to more candidates on the market and decreasing rates. During the first half of the year, SAP pushed their SAP Hana platform. With the opening of a new SAP Hana data centre in Sydney, more companies looked to leverage their IT spend in this area. There were also many NSW Government SAP projects in the beginning stages, which lead to significant hiring in the SAP market. The Oracle WebCenter space was also very busy, with a number of relevant projects taking off within NSW. R12 implementations and upgrades continued to keep the market moving for both contract and permanent consultants. From a BI perspective, candidates with Master of Data Management (MDM) experience were in demand as companies looked to improve their data governance. LOOKING FORWARD In the next six months, SAP Hana resources will remain in high demand. This is still a new technology for the Australia and New Zealand region and there is as such a shortage of consultants who have the requisite skills in the market. The most in-demand skill sets, such as MDM, Oracle WebCenter, SOA and OBIEE/OBIA will be the most difficult to recruit over the next six months due to an imbalance in supply and demand. hiring managers to be open to sponsoring overseas candidates. Often this process isn’t as time-consuming as previously thought, and is substantially more beneficial from a financial and staff retention perspective. At the beginning of the year, permanent salaries generally remained constant, although salaries did slightly increase for more senior level positions due to a larger than usual amount of movement at the top end. However, on the contract side, rates for candidates with generic skill sets slackened off somewhat and some candidate salaries decreased by up to 10%. Candidates who are skilled in niche areas continue to attract a premium for their skill set due to being in constant demand. KEY TRENDS • SAP Hana skills will continue to be in demand as companies look to leverage their spend on Business Intelligence and ERP systems • A number of companies are expecting to instigate projects at the start of the new financial year, and the market will become more buoyant accordingly. Skills in demand will be in the OBIEE and OBIA spaces, as well as the ERP/CRM and BI spaces • Offshoring and restructuring activities will continue for the remainder of the year and this will add to the growing candidate pool _ “Candidates who are skilled in niche areas continue to attract a premium for their skill set due to being in constant demand.” _ To attract the best candidates, we advise companies to move swiftly through the recruitment process. For contract roles, we recommend hiring managers make initial contracts as long as possible in order to attract quality candidates, who usually prefer more stable, secure and rewarding projects.
