Commodore’s Report.
Much has happened at the club, since the last issue, with sailing remaining a top drawcard. All formal
sailing events for the season were completed, following the Easter “Ian Freeland Memorial” Series, but for
the keel boat Winter Series. Ant is doing his best to bring this series together, now.
Congratulations to the new World Sparrow Champion, FYC member, Tedd Warden. Tedd won this title 40
years ago, & again last Easter at Somers YC. What a champion!! Well done Tedd.
The Classic Clinker Dingy Series was held at FYC on the 6th April. The race went ahead despite high winds, &
was highlighted by Tim Phillips dingy being swamped & having to be towed in!!
All the club series & championships were closely contested, as was the Ian Freeland series, over Easter. The
OB racing & keel boat series were a great success & enjoyed by all. A collision in the keel boat series
resulted in a mock “protest meeting” with Peter Merritt from YV chairing. The hearing & outcomes were a
great experience & appreciated by all who attended. Thanks to Brian Coleman & Ric Barker for completing
the hearing panel. The Rules of Sailing, the Club Sailing Instructions & Protest Procedures will be on the
agenda for next season.
Many thanks to all who contributed to the club sailing this year, in particular, Brian, Rick & Ant.
The 420/470 state squad did a week-end ocean training off FYC over last week-end. They trained in up to
20 knot winds off West Head &found it exhilarating. Many thanks to Ian & Emma Pratt for coordinating &
officiating the week-end.
Socially the Good Friday lunch was popular & a great success with up to 50 attending. Ray Johns & three of
his musos from the Red Hill Baker’s band, Denis, John & Alan, played great music, for free, as part of Ray &
Jill’s club sponsorship. Mary Louise Hatch again sang beautifully, including some great Blues songs. She was
assisted toward the end by Jane & Max, in a most unlikely trio!!. Pete Kelly again recited Australian poems
brilliantly. Picnic cooking was a big success & a small profit was made on the day.
A big thank you to all who contributed.
The club working bee held on Monday 21st April was most industrious. The cleared weeds area was planted
out, the new bifold doors varnished, the deck oiled & the shed cleaned out & the club boats put away for
winter. I was surprised & delighted to see Mike Hollowood there so soon after his cardiac surgery. Well
done Mike !

ANZAC LONG
WEEKEND
Over the ANZAC weekend, nine intrepid International 420 teams from Victoria braved the elements on
the edge of Bass Strait during an intense training camp hosted by Flinders Yacht Club.
The training weekend was arranged by the Victorian International 420 Class Association and held at the
entrance to Westernport Bay.
After completing shore-based theory and safety briefings, the sailors from Black Rock Yacht Club,
Mornington Yacht Club and Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron launched from the gently sloping and protected
sandy beach in front of the club house. Their coaches Tom Klemens and Will Llewelyn, currently
campaigning a 470 together, had both previously trained at Flinders in their 420 days. Their local
knowledge and respect for the Flinders sailing conditions was much appreciated by the training group!
With a 25-30kt change blowing in from the southwest on Saturday morning, the sailors knew they were in
for some great swells later in the weekend. They were very relieved when the wind settled and the sun
came out on Sunday for perfect challenging conditions. Long upwind and downwind legs were set to help
the sailors to adjust to the unusual wave pattern, followed by short course racing.
This area of Westernport was chosen in part because it provides the sailors with ocean conditions in
advance of the 2014 International 420 Nationals and the 2015 Australian Youth Championships, which will
both be hosted in December/January by Fremantle Sailing Club in WA.
The Victorian International 420 fleet has expanded rapidly, with over 40 boats currently active. Many junior
sailors from the International Optimist and Minnow classes have transitioned into the 420 class during the
last two years. At the recent Victorian 420 Championships 19 boats took part and 44 boats from around
Australia, NZ and Hong Kong competed in the Nationals, both hosted by Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat
Club. More information about the Victorian International 420 fleet is available at:
www.facebook.com/vic420association.
A very special thanks from all the sailors to the members of Flinders Yacht Club for hosting this very
memorable 420 training weekend.

Trim and Minny Cruise Gippsland Lakes
May .2014
Last month we found boating heaven with two classic clinker dinghies on the Gippsland Lakes. Little Trim
you know well and my mate Wayne Parr’s Minny is also 15 foot, similar to littlew Trim. We launched
near Paynesville and with strong easterlies forecasted spent day one motoring east as far as possible. We
followed McMillan Strait through to Lake King and crossed it with the deck of the Metung pub firmly in
mind. It was late afternoon by the time we landed at Lakes Entrance we recrossed the entrance back to
Cunningham Arm then down the Hopetoun Channel to set up camp at Barrier Landing. The coastal
parkland at Barrier Landing’s a very narrow sandbar just feet above sea level. It’s midway along the
Ninety Mile Beach where there’s not another footprint to be seen. Fish and Pinot dinner by the camp
fire…yummy! Next morning the predicted easterly front rolled in and we headed downwind sailing for
Paynesville 18 miles away. This time we passed Metung directly onto Lake King, but the front freshened
to about 18 knots and the shallow exposed water became quite choppy. We went inshore to shelter
behind Tambo Bluff, put a reef into Minny’s lugsail and changed Trim’s main to a storm-sail. Under
reduced sail both boats comfortably handled the conditions on the expanse of the lake and we headed
straight across to McMillan Strait and Paynesville. Lunch was taken on the waterfront. With easterly still
strong we rode it west for a further 10 miles down Lake Victoria to Loch Sport. With excellent timing the
rain held off until we’d settled into a B&B cottage, just a short walk from the very snug marina. A nice
end to a great day of boating! By morning the weather was fine so we motored back on Lake Victoria to
Buttlers Landing, retrieved the boats and hit the road for home. We’ll be back!
