By the time you read this the school will have broken up for the Easter holiday and no doubt you will be looking forward to a somewhat more relaxed pace and some quality time spent together with your families. Here at Ashton House we have had a very varied and active past few weeks ranging from our science week with head-line attraction “the chicks”! and our very well attended musical concert a couple of weeks ago, to the Easter Disco last Friday and, still to come at time of writing, our end of term talent show. Science week was most ably coordinated by Mrs Lark with each class enjoying a science-focused timetable for the week. This culminated in a suitably messy and hands-on activity afternoon in the school hall. The children were wonderfully animated and it was good to see so much parental support at this event. As you will no doubt have already heard, the chicks spent two weeks with us changing from eggs (!) to adorable balls of cheeping yellow fluff. The children loved watching them develop and having the opportunity to handle them very carefully. We were all sorry to see them leave last Friday but they were fast growing out of their little nursery. Many thanks to the PTA for funding this most successful enterprise. On the 20th March junior pupils put on an excellent musical evening for their parents and families, playing and singing most confidently in front of a capacity audience. It was a most enjoyable occasion and I was extremely proud of them all. I hope they all continue to develop and enjoy their music making in the years to come. This year’s PTA Easter disco was once again very well attended with an incredibly high standard of Easter bonnet which certainly made it very difficult for our judges. There was a very happy atmosphere and everyone of whatever age seemed to be having a good time. Please see overleaf for some colourful photos of the event. May I wish everyone a very happy holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone back suitably rested and revived for the summer term on Monday 28th April. All classes from Nursery to Year 6 participated with investigations and experiments in their classrooms. On the afternoon of Friday 21st March the children had the chance to exhibit their favourite activity for all to view. Many exciting, interesting and sometimes messy displays were set up in the school hall. The children and staff had great fun taking part in these science activities. I would like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone for their enthusiasm and also to all parents who came along to support this event. Mrs A Lark - Deputy Head Teacher Musical Evening 2014 On 20th March thirty junior children entertained a capacity audience to a varied programme of musical items, either played on the piano, guitar, flute, recorder and violin, or sung. The children showed amazing poise and confidence performing in front of so many people and certainly deserved the applause they received at the end of the event. Well done to all our talented musicians who I hope will go on to even greater things in the future and a big “thank you” to our dedicated musical staff, led so enthusiastically by Miss Graham. Mrs Grundberg Head Teacher EVENTS PTA Easter Disco The PTA annual Easter Disco at the Thistleworth Tennis Club took place once again last Friday with an amazing collection of bonnets. The children, and I am sure parents, put a lot of effort into their creations. They all looked wonderful as you can see from the pictures here. Thank you to the PTA for organising this popular event. Mrs Grundberg Head Teacher EVENTS Handwriting Competition This year’s Handwriting Competition produced some very good work. The children had to copy a poem in their neatest style, the older the children the longer the poem. Certificates were awarded in assembly to the best three entrants in each class from years 1-6 . The winners from each class were as follows: Year 1 – Shakti, Daria, Shrey, Year 2 Sania, Anjali ,Aiyesha, Year 3 Aidan, Taran, Rasveen, Year 4 – Anoushka, Shania, Richard, Year 5 – Anisha, Humza Sarthak and Year 6 Alaina, Imogen, Hibbeh. These winning entries and other work of a high standard will be entered in a national prep schools competition in May. Mrs Stewart - Literacy Co-ordinator SCHOOL TRIPS Year 1 & 2 visit Gunnersbury Park Museum Year 1 - Victorian Kitchens Years 1 and 2 visited Gunnersbury Museum to learn about how things worked in the olden days. Year 1 had the opportunity to tour the Victorian kitchen, laundry room and scullery room. The boys wore waist -coats and helped with the serving whilst the girls wore aprons and mob caps to help out in the kitchen. We discovered that things were a lot harder when everything had to be done by hand and we promised we would help out at home a little more now that we know how lucky we are! Mrs Marlow - Year 1 Class Teacher Year 2 - Florence Nightingale On Wednesday 19th March Year 2 visited Gunnersbury Park Museum to take part in a Florence Nightingale Workshop. The children were greeted by Miss Nightingale and had the opportunity to take part in role play of her life and work. The children dressed up as members and servants of the Nightingale family and soldiers and nurses of the Crimean War. They listened carefully to Florence as she explained her story and participated in character to act out scenes. After lunch there was time to enjoy the children’s playground in the park before returning to school on the coach. The children enjoyed themselves, behaved very well and were a credit to Ashton House School. Mrs Stewart - Year 2 Class Teacher QUIZ Dear All The answers to last weeks quiz are: 1.
