HIGH SCHOOL Hello, We end this term with gratitude to God. EVENTS/ACTIVITIES AFRICA DAY/CHILDREN’S DAY: The 2014 Africa Day and Children’s Day were jointly observed in a solemn assembly on Tuesday, 27th May, 2014. The occasion was devoid of activities usually associated with such day, instead, it was mainly characterized by intercessory prayers for the peace of the nation and the school girls abducted in Chibok, Bornu State. The guest minister, Pastor Abasiakan Ekpuk of the Intercessors for Nigeria, Calabar branch gave an exhortation and also led in the session of intercessory prayers. Other Highlights of the event were rendition of congregational hymns, special songs by the High School students and display of placards by the schools in protest of the abduction of the Chibok school girls and the nation’s state of insecurity. In her opening remark, the Executive Consultant/Schools Administrator, Mrs L T Tombush lamented the deplorable security situation in the country and urged the entire school community to intercede in prayers, especially for the release of the Chibok Girls, adding that nothing is impossible with God. The programme was aired on NTA Channel 12 Uyo on May 29 and 30, 2014. GRADUATION 2014: On Saturday, 26th July 2014, PEGS held its 2nd High School Graduation Ceremony of the Class of 2014. Among the dignitaries that graced the occasion were the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Prof. Atim Antai, represented by Mr. Eyibio Udofia - Director, Secondary and Higher Education Department, Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education and Prof. Franca Anijaobi-Idem who represented the Vice Chancellor, Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. S. W. Peters. The Guest Speaker was Prof. Daniel Ekanem of the Department of Paediatrics, University Teaching Hospital, Calabar. Other dignitaries were Mr. John Arkley-JVO Manager Exxonmobil, Mr. Mohammed Umar - Chairman - PEGS Board of Trustees; Board members, namely, Mr Samuel Asamudo, Elder (Mrs) Alice Esin as well as the PTA Chairman, Mr Victor Maples. Also present were the Manager KeyStone Bank - Rotn Lucia Udoh and, of course, our dear parents. Prizes and awards were presented to the best students in different subject areas. Master Moses Ededet Essien earned the Overall Best Student's Award for the graduating Class of 2014. Master Joshua Victor Eneyo gave the valedictory speech on behalf of the graduating class, after which prayers were offered for them. At the end of the ceremony, there was a Buffet for the graduating PRIZE-GIVING DAY: This ceremony was held on Friday, 25th July 2014. Prizes were awarded to students with excellent performance in their academics for the session. A parent, Mrs Ndipmong Inyang offered free hairdo at Beauty Court Salon and Spa to all the overall best students in the different classes. We sincerely appreciate this act of benevolence. PROM DAY: The Prom Day is an event organized for final year students of High School on the eve of their graduation. It happened on Friday 25th July, 2014 where the students showcased their talents socially. 2014 COWBELL MATHEMATICS COMPETTION: Uwakmfon Joseph Utuk and Etietop Bassey Utin of class 9 clinched the 1st and 2nd positions, respectively in the junior category of the 2014 Cowbell Mathematics Competition. They received cash prizes, school materials and certificates. EXTERNAL EXAMINATION: NECO (BECE), Akwa Ibom State (BECE), NECO (SSCE) and WAEC May/June (WASSCE) Examinations were written by classes 9 and 12. Also, the class 11 students participated in the Akwa Ibom State SS 2 promotion examination which lasted from 15th through 24th July, 2014. CAREER TALK: During the term, the High School hosted distinguished professionals on Career Talk. They include: - Barr. Mrs. Idorenyin Eyo, Faculty of Law, University of Uyo talked on the Legal Profession on Wednesday 30th April, 2014. - Friday 2nd May, 2014 had Dr. Ime S. Edem on the place of Veterinary Medicine in the world economy. - The Board of Trustees Chairman, Mr. Mohammed Umar took his turn on Wednesday 21st May, 2014 to talk on Human Resource Management. - On Wednesday, 4th June, 2013 a team of three Academics, comprising Dr Edu Inam, Dr N U Asamudo and Dr Patience Bassey from the Faculty of Science, University of Uyo gave talks on the Teaching Profession as a career with special reference to Chemistry, Computer Science and Microbiology. - On 9th of June, 2014 there was a young guest speaker, Miss Dhvani Tombush who happens to be a PEGS alumna and an undergraduate in New York City. First, she had a life building counseling session with Classes 7, 8 and 9 girls. In the next session the Classes 10 & 11 were enlightened on different scholarship opportunities, international examinations and universities in USA, UK etc., which they can from. On the whole, the different presentations were captivating, informative and very rewarding. We appreciate the Executive Consultant/Schools Administrator for her ingenuity and co-operation. FRANK TALK: Executive Consultant/Schools Administrator along with the Principal, Vice Principal Academics and female teachers had an interactive Frank Talk with all the High School female students on Thursday, 22nd May, 2014. Interaction/advice bordered on: 1. cultivating the habit of greeting and showing courtesy in their daily life 2. Maintaining their integrity by being chaste so as to earn respect. 3. Being hygienic. The Executive Consultant explained that being friendly with the opposite sex may not be a bad thing, but warned that intimacy with an ulterior motive is going out of the way. She discouraged exchange of love letters as it would affect them academically, stressing that their main focus now is their studies which they ought to concentrate on because it will pay off tomorrow. She added that their best friends are their mothers in whom they should confide mostly. Questions from different classes were entertained by the EC/SA and the Principal and contributions made. In their contribution, Classes 8, 9 and 11 representatives advised their juniors on how to live their lives successfully as growing girls. The Head Girl brought this fun and interactive session to a close pledging on behalf of the girls that they will turn a new leaf. She appreciated the motherly advice given to them. CLUB ACTIVITIES: World Environmental Day: The biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action – World Environment Day (WED) was marked by the Girl Guides Club of Pegasus Schools on the 5th of June, 2014. Speaking on the topic ‘Climate Change and You’, the guest speaker, Mrs Enobong Alfred reflected on this year’s global theme – ‘Raise Your Voice; Not the Sea Level’. After enumerating so many activities that constitute problems on the world’s climate, she narrowed her exposition to the challenges caused by human activities and encouraged everyone to become an agent of change in support of sustainable, clearer, greener and brighter environment for healthy living. The girls and staff were colourfully dressed in their guides’ T-shirt. Fish Net Production: Girl Guides Club handled as their project for the term. They were also engaged by the Executive Consultant/Schools Administrator who taught them how to make beautiful flowers from coloured papers on Thursday 29th May, 2014. SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRANCE EXAMINATION: Supplementary entrance examination into the High School for 2014/2015 session took place on Friday 18th July 2014. MAKE UP CLASSES: In preparation for both internal and external examinations, morning and afternoon classes were organized for classes 9, 10 11 and 12. In addition, slow learners in Mathematics in classes 7 and 8 were engaged in early morning lessons. MENTAL ALERTNESS ACTIVITIES: In order to sustain mental alertness, students were made to participate in spelling bees competition, impromptu speeches and responding to sets of questions based on excerpts read during morning devotions. They also did a research work on the life profile of Late Prof. Dora Akunyili. SAFETY BRIEFING/DRILL: On Tuesday 13th May, 2014 teachers were briefed on the importance of safety awareness and the need to participate actively in the drills. They were made to know that it is their responsibility to teach the students on safety consciousness. Moreover, the entire school had safety drills on random days to ensure alertness to possible emergency. Mr. Enobong Ntukidem from the Loss Prevention Department, QIT, Ibeno was an observer of the exercise. COUNSELLING: In an effort to curb some excesses among the students, the Principal made out time to counsel them periodically. ORCHESTRA TRAINING: This programme was organized for the High School students using sports and club days as well as Saturdays SPORTS: On Tuesday of every week, students were engaged in the practice of skills and techniques involved in playing football, shot put, discus, javelin, tennis and badminton. IN-HOUSE TRAINING: Pegasus Schools Staff held an In-House Training on Thursday 12th June, 2014. The training covered areas such as Literacy in the World of Works, Inspiring Good Character, The Symptoms of Test Anxiety, Reading, Teaching outside the Box, Mathematics Games for Elementary Students and Beading as an Instructional Material across the Curriculum. OTHER INFORMATION SCHOOL FEES: It was observed during the term that some of the students were adversely affected due to non-payment of school fees on time. To avoid its reoccurrence we advise that school fees be paid during the holidays before the school re-opens for next session. PUNCTUALITY: We plead with parents to make it a point of duty to ensure that their children are punctual to school in order not to be returned home as a result of lateness because this would affect their academic work negatively. Note that if your child comes to school after 7:25am, he/she is considered late and will be disciplined as stated above. HANDLING OF BOOKS: Much to our dismay, some students in the High School are careless with their text and note books. We therefore solicit the co-operation of parents to be interested in checking the proper handling of these materials to help their durability and neatness. USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA BY STUDENTS: It has been observed that some students have the privilege and time at home to engage actively in browsing, pinging, twittering, face-booking etc., all at the detriment of their academics. It is therefore imperative for parents to monitor the use of electronic gadgets in their children’s custody. There is always a right time for everything. So let us give a proper orientation to our children to enable us nurture them well for a better future. PERSONAL APPEARANCE: Parents are requested to adhere to the following school dressing standard as defaulting children will be sent back home: Girls to braid their hairs to the back weekly Boys to wear neat and low-cut hair always Avoid dirty socks Use ankle length white cotton socks and well-polished black cover shoes. White and neat canvas to be used for sports days The right pattern of uniforms provided by the school to be worn daily READING OF NEWSLETTER: We advise parents to endeavor to always read the Newsletter which comes every term for updates and information from the school. DAMAGED/LOST SCHOOL MATERIALS: As a reminder, parents will be responsible for the replacement of books and other school materials that are damaged or lost by their children. UPCOMING EVENTS: a. DEATH: With gratitude to God for a life well spent, but with a deep sense of loss, we commiserate with our Executive Consultant, Mrs L T Tombush on the death of her beloved father who departed this world on July 3, 2014. The name and class of students should be clearly written on the Bank Teller, and NOT THE NAME OF DEPOSITOR. Parents who pay through internet transfers should also indicate clearly the name and class of the students. Having done the above, parents will NOT be expected to bring tellers to school after payment as they will be captured on-line. Students whose fees are not paid before resumption will not be picked nor allowed into the school. Always endeavour to indicate the student’s name and class on the teller.
