Football for Hope Siyakhona Media Skills The Football for Hope Siyakhona Media Skills programme is led by FIFA and Sony and aims to bring media skills to young community leaders around the world. Launched in South Africa in 2009, the initiative has reached over 400 young leaders in more than 40 disadvantaged communities. It gives these young talented people the opportunity to take part in digital photography and video courses and learn practical, vocational skills. Ultimately, the goal is to provide them with relevant skills for jobs in the media and communications sector. Siyakhona, the title of the programme, means “we can do it” in the common South African languages of Zulu and Xhosa. The name was chosen because the project was launched in South Africa. In order to make Siyakhona a reality, FIFA and SONY work closely with community-based organisations to define training modules and select young leaders; with local media trainers to deliver courses and consult the trainees; and with local SONY distributors to provide the necessary equipment. The equipment provided includes handycams/camcorders, α/DSLR cameras and memory cards. Over the past years, young trainees have shot countless photos of how football helps them in their daily lives and impacts their communities, produced community-focused films to raise awareness of particular social issues, and some even generate their own revenue through short term contract work. In 2014, Siyakhona projects will be implemented in 14 communities around the world, of which three will be in Brazil. Please find the list of the participating NGOs in the table below.
