B”H Upstate, SC Summer 2014 Parent Handbook Dear Parents, Welcome to Camp Gan Israel—Upstate Jewish Day Camp! We are looking forward to sharing a wonderful summer with your family. We have prepared an exciting schedule to give your child an amazing time. Please read the information provided in this Parent Handbook to ensure that the summer runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Together, we will give your child a experience of a lifetime! Attendance is taken by our staff every morning. 2. If your child will be absent from camp, please notify the camp at (864) 256-1770 or email [email protected]. Parking Lot/Pick up Drop Off .1 Camp begins at 9 am. Drop off begins at 8:50 am. Pick-up is from 2:50 to 3:00 pm. .2 If you bring your child after camp has begun, please park in the designated parking spaces and campers must be escorted by their parents or responsible adult into the bunk room. .3 If someone other then the parent will be picking up the child, a release form must be on file. No child will be released without a signed form. .4 Campers find it hard to adjust when they come late, and they worry when their parents don’t pick them up on time. Please be prompt. Camp begins at 9:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm. After 3:15 pm, parents will be charged for after care. Lunch 1. Lunches should be packed in a lunch bag or box marked with the child’s first and last name. 2. Lunches should be Kosher and dairy or pareve. Please don’t send glass jars/bottles. Please note: we are a PEANUT FREE camp. Please do not send any snacks or lunches that have peanuts. 3. Camp serves fresh fruit as an afternoon snack daily. Please send other (healthy) snacks with your child, to be eaten throughout the day. 4. Please send your child with a water bottle, daily. 5. NEW THIS YEAR! Tzedakah (charity) is a concept that is fundamental to Judaism. Our camp attempts to develop a commitment among our campers to share with others less fortunate than themselves by donating a few pennies every day to charity. Parents are asked to send a few coins for Tzedakah every day with your campers. Trips 1. Campers must wear a camp t-shirt on trip days (twice a week). One camp t-shirt is included with your camp fee. Additional t-shirts are available at $8/t-shirt. 2. On trip days, please pack lunch in a disposable bag, and include an extra drink. Swimming .1 Campers will go swimming on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the YMCA in Simpsonville. .2 The campers are supervised by an experienced certified lifeguard. .3 On swim days, all campers should bring a bathing suit, a towel and flip flops. .4 During swimming, staff will keep all of their campers in their sight and assist with behavior management and rule compliance. Special events for the entire family are part of our rich, exciting schedule. They include a Family Shabbat get-together and after camp family activity. Our camp calendar and our weekly newsletters will keep you up to date with all our exciting activities. Frequently Asked Questions 1. How does my camper find lost items? a. Please mark all belongings with your child’s name. This is very important since shirts are identical and individual items are difficult to identify without a label. 2. How do I arrange to pick up my camper during the camp day? a. If you need to pick up your camper during the day, please notify our office so we can arrange to have your camper ready for you. We cannot release campers without parental permission. 3. What does my camper need each day? a. Campers should bring a water bottle, snack, lunch, Tzedakah coin and sunscreen everyday. A bathing suit and towel should be sent on swim days. Camp T shirt is mandatory on trip days. 4. Can my camper bring precious items to camp? a. Campers should not bring jewelry, cell phones, iPods, head phones, expensive toys, etc. to camp. Camp Gan Israel supplies everything campers will need for each day’s activities. 5. How can I speak with my child’s counselor? a. A call to the camp office will answer most questions. Since counselors are constantly supervising groups and activities, messages will be taken at the camp office.
