Research Interests
My main research area is developing the GEMPACK software package. GEMPACK
(General Equilibrium Modelling Package) is a suite of programs for developing and solving
economic models. This work includes implementing enhancements to the GEMPACK programming language TABLO, refining GEMPACK’s numerical methods for solving systems
of equations, and improving the usuability of the software.

Contribution to GEMPACK Software Releases:
In collaboration with fellow GEMPACK developers Prof. Ken Pearson and Prof. Mark
Horridge, I have contributed to the support and development of the GEMPACK software package
over the last 6 years. A summary of the development history follows.
November 2011. Source-code and Executable-image GEMPACK release 11.1.
Minor release. Accumulated fixes including several GFortran related issues.
October 2011. Source-code and Executable-image GEMPACK release 11.0.
Major release. New features include:
– New TABLO syntax, condition “<index> IN <set>” allowed in IF expressions
2
– GFortran compiler supported
– The single volume GEMPACK Manual now available, which is a major rewrite and extension of the previous form of GEMPACK documentation volumes GPD-1 to GPD-9.
Also includes accumulated fixes.
April 2010. Source-code and Executable-image GEMPACK release 10.0-002.
Minor release. Enhancements include:
– Extended set constructor statements
– Allowed shocks from coefficients
– Allow use of 4GB memory for 32-bit programs under 64-bit Windows
– TABLO-generated programs use memory more efficiently
Also includes accumulated fixes.
April 2009. Source-code and Executable-image GEMPACK release 10.0-001.
Minor release. Enchancements include:
– Better compiler optimization leading to faster runtimes
– Ongoing support for Intel Fortran Compiler
– Improvements to the CMBHAR program
– Refinement to LU decomposition phase of the solution process
Also includes accumulated fixes.
May 2008. Source-code and Executable-image GEMPACK release 10.0.
Major release. New features include:
– Parallel processing
– Intel Fortran Compiler supported
– More efficient solution methods by re-use of pivots
– Sparse storage format for Header Array files
– RAS MATRIX function
Also includes accumulated fixes.
Teaching contribution to Centre of Policy Studies Short Courses:
Every year, the Centre of Policy Studies delivers introductory and advanced short courses in
CGE modelling around the world. These courses are intense 5-day (sometimes 7-day) courses
with a dual emphasis on model theory and practical modelling exercises implemented in GEMPACK. I contribute to the practical computing component of these courses, as well as lecturing
on the theory and use of GEMPACK in model implementation. A list of recent courses follows.
