Issue 7 - Hiltingbury Junior School

Hiltingbury Highlights
Issue 7
Friday 17th
October
Hello from Mrs Hunter
As we seek to make our new curriculum week as engaging as possible we have introduced the idea of
Wacky Weeks. These will take place once a term and are a chance for the children to really take the lead
in deciding what they would like to learn about and what the content of the week might involve. These
topics will capture their interests and who knows where they might lead! Year 6 classes undertook a
special disaster week (see their write up below) while 4M are currently planning ‘Sweets and Chocolates’
(Mrs Massa insists that this was the children’s choice and not hers!) and 3P have opted for ‘Aliens and Space’, to name but
a few. The children brainstorm the work that they can cover in this week and think about what they would like to find out
about and the teachers ensure that there is quality English, maths and science taking place, as well as a variety of
foundation subjects. It is also an excellent opportunity to develop our WE CARE learning skills. We will monitor the
success of these weeks in school this year to help us decided how we move forward with them next year. Thank you to
the teachers for taking on this curriculum enrichment.
It was lovely to see so many of you in school this week for parents’ evenings; I hope that this proved a useful time for you.
I am wondering if I should have created a sticker album for parents this term so you could collect a sticker each time you
have come in for an information evening with a prize for parents who have managed to collect them all! The rest of this
term sees two final meetings, one to explain the new English curriculum and one to look at the new SEN code of practice.
We’ll then give you a breather until after Christmas!
Finally, we do have a new feature for the Highlights. Each week we will be giving you a brain teaser that you can work on
as a family. The discovery of the final answer is not the important thing but rather the process of approaching it and
trying alternatives out. The answer will be shared the following week!
Enjoy the weekend,
Mrs Hunter 
Brain Teaser
If a clock were turned into a 24-Hour clock so that it struck 24 times at midnight, four times at 4am etc., how
many times would it strike in the course of a 24 hour day?
Junior Road Safety Officer
“On Friday, Mrs Tombleson & I went to a Road Safety Officer Day at the Botley Park Hotel. Road Safety
Officers are school pupils whose job is to help other pupils to be safer on the roads. We came back with
lots of ideas of activities for the school, including a wish to recruit some more Road Safety Officers. On
the day, we did things from designing a bright T-shirt to making an advert to go on the radio. We
learned about accidents that happen. So please remember to always wear a seat belt in the car, wear
bright clothes when out & about, and always cross the road carefully in a suitable place. Sarah Tilsley
(5CN Road Safety Officer)”
Harvest Festival
Next Thursday is our Harvest Festival with Years 5&6 at 9:15am and then Years 3&4 at 10:15am. You are
very welcome to come and join us. Sim Dendy from New Life Church in Romsey will be speaking to us all
and we will also have our collection of dried goods for The Eastleigh Basics Bank. If you would like to
attend this event then please do contact the school office.
Year 6 Disaster!
Year 6 have had an enjoyable week learning about our topic - Disasters. We have been able to fit in a wide range of
activities including shelter building and basic first aid. We have been thinking about what it would be like to live in a place
that suffers from natural disasters and what it might be like to survive or witness one as well. This prompted some
fantastic drama work later in the week where children re-enacted scenario's involving a disaster. In addition to this we
have composed music, written newspapers and even made exploding volcanoes! The children have thoroughly enjoyed
the week, as have we. Thank you to all who were able to provide equipment for us to use. It was greatly appreciated.
Year 6 team, Ms Rhys-Jones, Miss Bradley and Miss Buffoni
SEN Information Evening
We shared with you earlier this year the date for the parent information evening for the new SEN (Special Educational
Needs) Code of Practice. As much as we try to give you as much warning with dates as possible, there can be the danger
that circumstances beyond our control take over, as is the case here, and we need to change
the date. The new date is Monday 17th November at 6:00pm, a week later than the date
previously advertised. We are not expecting the meeting to last more than an hour. This
session will be particularly relevant for parents of children who have SEN but it is open to
everyone. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by the moving of the day.
Squashing the Opposition
Harris Faizi was asked to step up in the Inter County Under 13 squash tournament held at Bournemouth
West Hants club on Sunday 12th of October. Hampshire caused havoc by beating teams from Avon and
Dorset County in smashing 5 love victory. Harris played with good team spirit and surpassed his opponents
with a 3-0 defeat which helped in securing Hampshire's place in the next round.

difficulties, a lunchtime activity organiser to work with our Year 6 play leaders and a play worker for the after school club

place in school on a Thursday morning at approximately 9.15am for five weeks.
A future date for your diary – we have had some requests for support with children’s self-esteem and emotional
resilience. Mrs Smith (our ELSA lead) and Mrs Evans (who runs our parenting courses) will be running a session for
parents on Monday 2nd March. This is the proposed date although it might change slightly! More details will follow.

this cause. We are giving you the date in advance so you can start thinking about a costume! (That

Year 4 Reading Helpers
Can you spare an hour a week to hear some children in Year 4 read ? It is really important that children are heard to read
regularly and we would be grateful for any support you can offer with this. Please see you child’s class teacher, if you feel
that you can help. Many thanks, the Year 4 team.

Car Boot Sale Update
Many thanks to everyone who supported the Car Boot Sale in September. It was one of our busiest yet, with 68 sellers
and about 300 buyers. A huge thank you to Steve Vinall who does a fantastic job organising and delivering the event and
thanks also to Rachel Bailey and her children for all their help on the day. The event made £428.10 for the Schools and
Izzy Bailey (an ex-pupil) made £41.20 for Cancer Research on her cake stall!
Frozen Festival: Saturday 29th November 2pm-5pm
This year we are departing from our traditional Christmas Fair to deliver a family friendly fundraiser - the Frozen

in touch via [email protected]!
Dogs at the school gates
We have been made aware that some members of the community are finding the number of dogs at the
school gates a little intimidating. If you could bear this in mind when you are dropping your children
off/picking them up then that would be great. Thank you for your understanding.
Bedtime Story
We are very excited to invite you to our first ever bedtime story on Tuesday 13th January from 6.30 to 7.30pm
at the school. Children and their families can come back to school in their pyjamas for hot chocolate and
stories. More details will follow but keep the date free!
