egg999 2014 — Factsheet v3.0 — Sunday 18th May, 2014
General Information:
Where?
European members of the Triple Nine Society (TNS) are holding their fourth “European General Gathering of Triple
Nine Society” (egg999) in 2014. e event will take place in Amsterdam, e Netherlands.
e main part of our meeting will take place on Friday May 30th and Saturday May 31st at Atlantisplein 1, 1093 NE
Amsterdam (www.muzyq.com). If you want to book your flight already, the best (and oen only) option will be to book
to Schiphol Airport. From the airport, you will have to take a train to Amsterdam Centraal Station, or for around ¤40
you can get a cab to the hotel. Of course, Amsterdam can be reached by train as well. If you booked your hotel around
Leidse Plein, there are also direct bus connections (197 and 370) from Schiphol to Leidse Plein. For public transportation,
usually 9292 will give you a lot of useful information.
When?
e event will take place May 29th to June 1st 2014, this correlates with a long weekend over the Ascension Day public
holiday in many European countries.
Who?
e event is open to members of TNS, to lapsed members of TNS and to those qualified applicants who so far were
reluctant to make the plunge into this wonderful HIQ-society.
Members of other 99.9th-percentile-plus high-IQ societies with credible admission standards (Mega, Prometheus, Omega,
Four Sigma, Epimetheus, ISPE and OATHS) are also welcome. e general idea is not to exclude, but to include and
have a good time.
Friends and family members of all the above, accompanied by members of the societies, are of course welcome, too, but
note that they also have to register.1 Registration is not free, but the fee is reasonable, is the same for everyone and
there are discounts for early registration (see below).
Note that you don’t have to live in Europe to participate, everyone is very welcome — if you happen to be around
on a business trip or during your holidays in Europe, please consider joining in!
What?
e event will see a lot of interaction between members but also interesting presentations by members and non-members.
e tentative schedule looks like this, please understand that no details are available right now. What is sure, however,
is that you will enjoy the event:
Thursday:
1 Every
year, we get more and more requests of people who are in no 99.9th-percentile-plus high-IQ society, because they want to join the meeting.
Please understand that foremost we want to keep this this a HIQ meeting, so usually we do not allow too many guests for one host — one guest
per host is a good idea — or groups of non-members. I know this sounds harsh, but I think there’s no other option.
• 15:00 Informal get together at Café Wildschut
is usually does not mean that everyone has to be there at that time, nor does it mean that everyone will
be there at that time. It simply means that from 15:00h onwards someone will be there, and that person
hopes not to be all by himself/herself for very long.

Speakers?
Grethe van Geffen - Directing Mensa Nederland
Is leading Mensans like herding cats?
It is a worldwide saying in the Mensa community, that leading Mensans is like herding cats. Everybody feels that such
an ambition could face many impossibilities. I am proud to have led the Dutch Mensa community for 6 years, while
it grew from 3200 to 4500 highly intelligent members. What is ‘normal’ about Mensa leadership and what is specific?
My experience is: everything a Mensa leader faces, can and will be faced in other organisations — however, as the
intelligence of the members is more extreme, so are behaviours, paerns, policy discussions, conflicts, quality aspects
and community dynamics. In my presentation I will unfold some of the secret tools to benefit from the great potential
that intelligence brings to organisations.

Rianne van de Ven - CoreTalents
Rianne van de Ven (1971) is coach for gied adults. She also works as a consultant for companies on the subject of
giedness.
In 2012 she first heard about this Flemish assessment method that actually works for gied adults! She became a
recognized CoreTalents analyst and since then uses this method to help gied adults in explaining burn- and bore-out
(and recover from them) and make changes in their life/career to explore their talents to the max.
In this lecture she will talk about the method, it’s origin and why it is so useful for gied adults.
Art Sullivan - Distributed problem solving at 999 level: Finding solutions to chronic unemployment for
individuals with few resources
A group of us have fully articulated one solution, with some unresolved issues. e purpose of the talk is to outline
the solution, highlight the issues, and invite your input and reflection. e solution proposed for your consideration
includes educational, business, humanitarian and possible profit aspects.
Marleen Moors, MPhil - A short analysis of modernity: an introduction to Zygmunt Bauman’s notion of
liquid times
Polish-British sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman (*1925) became well-known for his concept of “liquid
modernity”. According to Bauman, contemporary Western culture is characterized by “fluidity”, a lack of certainty
which — for many people — results in a chronic sense of anxiety. In how far do we experience our age as liquid and
uncertain? How is it expressed in our daily lives? In this workshop a short introduction to Bauman’s main ideas will
be presented followed by time for reflection and a group discussion.
Emiel Martens - The Practice of Cultural Entrepreneurship
Introduced in the early 1990s, the notion of cultural entrepreneurship has gained significant recognition during the last
fieen years. In his talk Emiel will explore the development of cultural entrepreneurship by sharing his experiences as
a cultural entrepreneur in the Netherlands.
Nico Jurgens - Maintenance of windmills
Since long the society preserves cultural heritage. When maintenance is necessary the question always should be asked
why we preserve heritage. We need to answer this question to be able to make choices: save bad parts by repairing
them? Renew? In what way? Should repairs be visible or not? Will we make old things new and new things old?
In this lecture I will show some aspects of preservation and the ensuing questions. e questions are easy to answer.
Each individual will, however, answer the questions differently. e preservation of heritage leads to balancing between
many arguments.
is lecture is based on an article wrien by me, concerning conservation of traditional windmills. I chose examples
from different categories of cultural heritage in order to look from different points of view.
Accommodation?
Caspar writes:
I have compiled a brief list of hotels. Price indications are based on per person/night, single occupancy. e hostels
though are dormitory rooms with perhaps up to 10 (random) people sharing the room, not so suitable for people who
bring expensive electronics and jewelry to keep in the hotel room. Obviously, the prices might change over time…
Most hotels have Wifi and provide breakfast, and all of these are very near the Leidse Plein, which is a nice area to
gather at night for some drinks etc.
To choose a hotel, I would recommend to do as follows: Go to booking.com, choose the time range and your favourite
occupancy and price range, and pick ”Amsterdam” and ”Leidse Plein” (might be referred to as ”Leidse Square”), and
there you go. Once you have found your favourite place, you can aer that still google whether you can find a beer
price or offer on a different site, Venere, Trivago, Hotels or whatever.
e Leidse Plein is an area with a vivid night life. e area around MuzyQ (near Muiderpoort train station) is somewhat
quiet, perhaps 15-20 minutes with public transportation from Leidse Plein, 5-10 minutes by train from Centraal Station.
3
Of course it is also possible to instead book a hotel near the Muiderpoort station, which would be very near MusyQ, or
in Del which is really a beautiful place and it could be convenient on Friday.
• e Flying Pig Uptown (hostel): ¤35
• Hostel Leidseplein: ¤40
• Hostel Orfeo: ¤60
• Hotel La Boheme: ¤75
• Hotel Freeland: ¤80
• Hotel Crystal: ¤65
• Hotel Leidsegracht: ¤100
• entin Hotel: ¤105
• NH Amsterdam Centre: ¤114
Public Transport?
Caspar writes:
I recommend that everyone buys an ”anonymous OV chipkaart”. It costs ¤7.50 raw, and needs to be charged. On
Schiphol Airport you can buy such a thing at a few places (AKO newspaper shop, NS train ticket shop, ticket machine…).
e card can be used in the train, metro, tram and bus.
Here are a few prices that might apply to us:
• Amsterdam ⇒ Del: ¤12.50
• Schiphol ⇒ Amsterdam: ¤4.00
• Leidseplein ⇒ Muiderpoort: ¤1.50
• Someplace in Amsterdam ⇒ Someplace in Amsterdam: ¤1.50
You will probably need 2 of each of the two first ones, about 10 Amsterdam internal trips, that sums up to about ¤48?
e card can be (re-)charged at any ticket machine, using a debit card, so people can use their own insight how much
should be on it. Refunding the remaining balance costs ¤2.50, and the card will not be refunded (but can be re-used
when you come back).
is is how it works: you check in before you enter the vehicle, and you check out when you go out (important, the
actual price will be calculated and deduced from the balance). www.ov-chipkaart.nl
Nice app to plan your transportation within the Netherlands: search for 9292 in your app store, or go to 9292.nl
How much?
We try to keep the costs for the event low and still convene in style — still it is necessary to have a registration fee that
covers the costs involved. (ese are meeting rooms, tours, etc. Your own expenses will be covered by yourself.)
If you are a member of TNS but cannot afford the fee, send us an email, we’ll figure out something discreetly.
Registration between Feb 01 and Mar 15 ¤65.00 / CHF 82.00 / $ 90.00 / £56.00
Registration between Mar 16 and Apr 30 ¤75.00 / CHF 95.00 / $ 104.00 / £65.00
Late Registration on May 01 or later ¤85.00 / CHF 107.00 / $ 118.00 / £73.00
For your payment please chose whatever method is convenient for you, but keep bank fees in mind and, when in Europe,
try to avoid PayPal.2 Please state “egg999” and your name clearly on the bank transfer — and just to be safe, please
send an e-mail, preferably to orsten, announcing your payment.
2 As
this draws questions every now and then: ere’s nothing bad about PayPal and I am not consumed by an irrational hatred on it either. It’s just
that PayPal is more expensive than a usual wire transfer, and I’d rather have the money ending up for us to spend, than enriching PayPal. So, for
¤, wire transfer is best, for £ and $ PayPal is usually the beer option.
