If you have a nervous animal, try using a drop of Lavender oil
on your hands and offer a sniff.
It reputedly has a calming effect and helps them to relax
in a stressful situation, such as a visit to the vet.

Wenlo’s Summer
Competition
Season is
Complete …
This summer, Wenlo RDA
Group
became
an
Endurance Group, linked
with Endurance GB, which
means that we offer a new
challenge for our riders.
Our
first
Endurance
Competition was held
at Beacon Hill Country
Park, with options of riding
1km, 3km and 5km and
each rider could enter
two distances. Starting at
various points, each rider
undertook their chosen
distance and could walk,
trot or canter, (in the
appropriate places) their
way around the given
route.
Several riders took part on
this first attempt, but Wenlo
are hoping to make this a
more regular competition
with the potential to invite other
local RDA Groups to come and
take up the challenge too.
The riders themselves all seemed
to have a lovely day and hacking
around Beacon Hill really is a great
ride!
The finale to the Wenlo competition
season was at the second Special
6
Olympics of the year, held at
Scropton. One horse, Charlie and
several riders were once again put
to the test
in Dressage,
Working Trails
and
Horse
Care.
S t e p h e n
Green came
3rd in Horse
Care and a
Well Done in
Dressage and
Working Trails.
William Wright
achieved a
Well Done in
his Dressage
and
came
3rd in Working
Trails
and
Horse Care.
Kirsty
Laing
came
1st
in
Working
Trails, 2nd in
Dressage and
2nd in Horse
Care.
Jarrod
Nel
(Ashmount
Rider) achieved Well Done in
Dressage, Working Trails and Horse
Care.
Well done to everyone who
has taken part in this season’s
competitions and thank you to all
the volunteers who have worked
with each rider throughout the year
to help them achieve their best!!
Congratulations
are in order!
Yes, all round,
but particularly
to volunteers
Susan Tomkins
and Francesca
Masserella who
were awarded
the Over and
Above award for
dedicated services
to RDA by
RDA National.
They were
presented with their
awards by councillor
David Snartt.
A very well done to
you both, Wenlo are
extremely proud of
this well deserved
recognition of your
services to RDA.

SHIATSU & RIDE WITH YOUR MIND
Vivienne Isaac
Shiatsu Sensations
Each year members of tESA (the
Equine Shiatsu Association) gather
for our weekend conference, it’s
an opportunity to get together with
equine shiatsu colleagues, students in
training and friends of equine shiatsu.
This year’s conference was held at
Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary,
Ingatestone, Essex, a true sanctuary
for misused, abused and discarded
equines.
We started with a talk from Sue Burton
who runs the sanctuary. She gave us
an insight into the day to day workings
of looking after their 200 or so animals
– horses, donkeys, sheep and goats.
Many are very aged, in their thirties
and even forties. What impressed me
8
the most was their ethos of ensuring
that not only is the physical welfare
of each animal looked after, so
too are the mental and emotional
aspects. Sue did admit that when
she first started out she was very
sceptical of using therapies to help
the horses but is now a very keen
convert, acknowledging the huge
benefits that the horses reap from
them. Every care is taken to keep the
horses in compatible groups so that
they can graze together, mutually
groom and generally live as horses
should. The biggest headache for
Remus is raising the £450,000 it takes
to run each year.
Next up was vet Mark Murrell who
spends a lot of time working with Sue
to ensure each animal is looked after
as well as is possible. New arrivals have
a full check up, and a programme
of care is established for each one.
Most arrive with a complex set of
problems – stress, depressed immune
system, malnutrition, multitudinous
infections,
intestinal
problems,
laminitis and so on.
Mark gave us a fascinating insight
into the latest veterinary thinking and
practice on gastric ulcers, ulcerative
bowel disease, degenerative joint
disease, laminitis and the links with
Equine Metabolic Syndrome and
PPID (Cushings). So much information
in just an hour and a half! My biggest
take-away points were to ensure
that horses have a high fibre, low
sugar diet and get plenty of exercise.
Sounds like common sense, but in this
day and age of many horses being
stabled for long periods, unable to
trickle feed fibre, overfed sugary
‘feeds’ and under exercised – a
timely reminder.
Saturday afternoon was spent
shiatsuing some of the horses. We’re
a diverse group of practitioners,
coming to equine shiatsu from various
routes, so each has developed
techniques and ways of working
that enhance the effectiveness of
our shiatsu treatments and this was a
great opportunity to share with each
other and especially with the horses.
On Sunday morning we had a ‘My
Favourite Thing’ session led by Liz
Eddy. Five Element theory was Liz’s
choice and she gave us an insight
into her thoughts on applying this
to the practical giving of shiatsu.
The five elements are Earth, Metal,
Water, Wood and Fire. There is a
‘creation’ cycle describing Earth as
the mother/creator of Metal, Metal
as the mother/creator of Water
and so on, and a ‘control’ cycle so
that once created each element is
‘controlled’ by another, for example
Water controls Fire (water puts out
fire). Each element has ascribed to
it various correspondences within
the body such as taste, smell, sense
organs, sound of voice, emotions, a
yin and a yang meridian, time of day
and the seasons.
So if the horse is constitutionally of one
element, say Water, then by being
more Metal-like in our touch, use of
voice etc. we can really support and
nurture the Water horse. If the Water
is running out of control we can be
more Earth like to dam the flow.
Next, of course, we had the pleasure
of treating more of the horses –
miniature horses to Shires and all
shapes, sizes, ages and with many
different problems, putting it all into
practise.
We rounded off the weekend with
a discussion on how to promote
equine shiatsu to the world – we
have this wonderful therapy that is
great for musculo-skeletal problems,
lameness, stiffness, stress, hormone
imbalance, breathing difficulties,
digestive problems and more, that is
a too well hidden secret!!
If you’d like to find out more – do give
me a call.
Combining the benefits of shiatsu
therapy, Ride With Your Mind biomechanics and horse psychology, I
offer many solutions to your ridden,
handling and bodywork issues (horse
and human). Body, Mind, Spirit.
Christmas is coming – give the gift
that keeps on giving – vouchers
available.

Hay or
Haylage?
The principle of conserving forage
is based on removing water or
oxygen in order to stop the forage
from moulding or decaying.
Hay is preserved when the water
content is reduced to below 20%,
drying naturally by the warmth
of the sun. Haylage typically has
a water content of between 4050% and has to be wrapped in
airtight plastic in order to allow
the fermentation process to take
place, which preserves the forage.
As hay tends to be made from
mature grass it has a lower
nutritional value than haylage
which therefore makes it more
10
suitable for feeding to good doers.
The feed value of haylage depends
on when the grass was cut - early
cuts are higher in calories and are
best for poor doers, while a later cut
produces a feed value similar to
hay. It should also be noted that if
feeding hay or haylage by weight,
haylage contains more water than
hay and can be fed in greater
quantities to take into account the
weight of the water.
Another consideration is storage.
Hay needs to be kept dry otherwise
it will mould and be wasted.
Haylage, because it is wrapped
in plastic, can be stored outdoors
if necessary though once a bale is
opened or damaged (ie has been
exposed to the air) it must be used
within a few days or it too will start
to mould.
