SAMANTHA HILL (nee Cramond)

Grade IV Rider:
SAMANTHA HILL (nee Cramond)
My name is Sam and I am a 22 year old Grade IV dressage
para-rider. I am the youngest of identical twin girls (my
sister Sigourney is a para show jumper). After a bad fall off a horse when I
was 16yrs damaged my lower vertebrae, I had surgery at 18yrs, a spinal
fusion that resulted in damaging the nerves of my left leg, causing partial
paralysis and weakness, also causing fibromyalgia up my back and chronic
pain syndrome. I use rubber bands to hold my left foot in the stirrup.
I was given the opportunity to lease a fantastic horse PJ over the previous 2 seasons and he gave me
the opportunity to compete at levels 4&5 and in para-dressage at HOY. I have recently married and
moved to the USA, so at present do not have a horse of my own but have started training in western
for something different. My ultimate goals are to represent New Zealand at the Para Olympics and
World Cup level western riding.
I am a qualified Animal Welfare Inspector and in NZ worked for SPCA as foster co-ordinator
(specialising in horses), volunteer co-ordinator and relief driver. I work for PAWS a cat rescue here in
the USA and aim to complete my Veterinary Technicians qualifications.
I live in Florida with my husband Jake who is in the US Air Force, with our dog Winchester and cat
Remington. I have recently been given the opportunity to school and ride a young dressage horse for a
rider here in Fort Walton.
What is Grade IV? Grade IV riders usually have impairment of one or both limbs or visual impairment.
