AHSGR KANSAS ROUND‐UP OF CHAPTERS Hosted by the Golden Wheat Chapter Hays, Kansas – October 11, 2014 Dear AHSGR Chapter Members: The Golden Wheat Chapter of Wichita is hosting this year’s Kansas Round‐Up of Chapter in Hays, Kansas at the Whiskey Creek, 3203 Vine, on Saturday, October 11, 2014. The registration begins on Saturday morning, October 11, at 8:00 a.m. with the meeting commencing at 9:00 a.m. Coffee and rolls will be served. All members are encouraged to bring homemade pie, kuchen, noodles, breads, jellies, and sauerkraut for the bake sale. The banquet begins at 6:00 p.m. Hotel accommodation information and banquet menu is on the back of this page. OKTOBERFEST ACTIVITIES: We encourage you to arrive in Hays early Friday morning to take part on the Hays Oktoberfest with the tapping on the keg ceremonies beginning at 11:00 a.m. There will be many food booths, speakers, presentations and plenty of music for dancing. A trolley will be available to take people down to the Oktoberfest at 10:45 a.m. leaving in front of the Days Inn and returning back to the hotel in two hours. There will also be a “Gathering of Round‐Up attendees” in the back room of Whiskey Creek beginning at 5:00 p.m. for sandwiches, snacks, desserts/kuchen and drinks. Please use the North side door of the restaurant. The Wichita Chapter has a full slate of interesting speakers for the day’s event. Schmaltz, Associate professor at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, where he teaches Modern European and World History. Both sides of his family claim some Black Sea German ancestry. Dr. Schmaltz has produced a variety of articles and German and Russian language translations for publications in the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR) in Lincoln, Nebraska, the German from Russia Heritage Society (GRHS) in Bismarck, North Dakota, and the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection at the North Dakota State University (GRHC NDSU) Libraries in Fargo. His talk will be, “Coming Full Circle: South America’s Germans from Russia and other 21st Century Reflections on Our Global Diaspora.” All Present and past members are encouraged to make a special effort to attend.
