1 REPORT ON ACTIVITIES DONE IN RECOGNITION OF WORLD HEART DAY 2014 In recognition of World Heart Day 2014 which was celebrated on September 29, the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) brought focus to the day through four (4) major activities. Details of the events are listed below: 1. SEPTEMBER 26, 2014 – SIMPLY RED WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL The event held to raise 10M dollars to go towards the building of a Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre was once again staged under the distinguished patronage of the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, ON, MP, Prime Minister of Jamaica, on the Lawns of Jamaica House. We celebrated our 25th Anniversary of the festival under the theme: “Celebrating Flavour, Flair and Fashion.” The four-hour affair featured five celebrity international chefs, 70 display booths, a fine assortment of wines and an evening of amazing culinary offerings where guests were able to indulge in a delectable array of servings prepared by ethnic chefs. The promotional opportunities leading up to the event were used to draw attention to the importance of heart healthy choices; and the fact that heart diseases are the major cause of death in Jamaica, hence the need for a Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre. Free blood pressure checks were done at the event. Live coverage The event was covered live by three radio stations, two newspapers and a social event television programme; and interviews were done with patrons, members for the health fraternity, including our executive director Mrs. Deborah Chen and Chairman Dr. Knox Hagley. 2 Participants Over 16 caterers and chefs, along with 70 booth holders and sponsors supported the event by providing tastings. Approximately 1,500 persons attended the event. Junior chefs sponsored by the Embassy of Chile under the theme “Early start to a Healthy Heart”. The dancing chefs entertained the patrons 3 Mission Catwalk designers competing in the little Red Dress Competition Pre-event coverage Apart from paid advertisement on radio and television the media gave the HFJ 16 free interviews for the promotion of Simply Red. 2. SEPTEMBER 28, 2014 – RUN FOR HOPE Each year, the organizers of Reggae Marathon Race stage a series of mini marathons leading up to the main event in December. The September 28 th race was called Run for Hope and was staged at the Hope Botanical Gardens. The Foundation participated in the event giving free blood pressure checks and counseling as well as giving out promotional 4 material on how to maintain a healthy heart. The HFJ was also part of an outside broadcast done at the event in which we also spoke about World Heart Day and heart related issues. 3. SEPTEMBER 29, 2014 - OUTSIDE BROADCAST The Heart Foundation of Jamaica celebrated the day with an outside broadcast on Nationwide Radio 90.3 FM with radio host Vernon Derby. The programme focused on the theme “Heart Choices, not Hard Choices” by promoting healthy lifestyles. Dr. Marilyn Lawrence Wright, Cardiologist at the HFJ, Mrs. Frances Mahfood, Nutritionist at the HFJ and Mr. Alonzo Mothershill, CPR Supervisor, HFJ also participated in the broadcast. Free Blood Pressure checks and counseling was also done and literature on maintain a healthy heart was also distributed. Address to the Lions Club of Kingston, October 01, 2014 Executive Director, Mrs. Deborah Chen was invited by the Lions Club of Kingston as the guest speaker to speak on the significance of World Heart Day. The Foundation also put on a display distributing our Newsletter – The Caridogram, information on the services offered and gave members free blood pressure checks. The Heart Foundation of Jamaica used the many public relations opportunities from these three major activities, along with our screening programme to promote World Heart Day 2014, and build awareness around the life-course approach to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with a focus on women and children.
