This site is a great one for beginning photographers. In a tutorial, the three basic terms are defined

Starting two years ago, Gunter Haibach started a
new column to showcase our members. I continued
it last year when Gunter’s responsibilities elsewhere
kept him too busy to continue. If you would like to
be profiled, please contact me at
[email protected]. It simply involves
providing me with an image of yourself and your
current favourite image that you have taken, as well
as answering a few questions.
We look forward to hearing about more of you,
especially the new members.

Visual Storytelling with Kevin Van Paassen
!
Once again, we got off to a great start with a fabulous presentation on visual story telling. Kevin is a freelance
photographer who has worked around the globe, including covering the war in Afghanistan and the 2012
Olympic Games in London, England. He has worked for the National Post, The Globe and Mail, MacLeans
and the New York Times. A talent that is evident in his body of work is the ability to tell a story through a
single image. Kevin shared with the club his secrets to capturing the story in the moment.
!
The picture should:
- provide context and help set the scene
- create a connection by putting a human face on the story
- add depth and understanding
- conveys feeling and emotion
!
Kevin talked about getting to know your subject, bringing out their personality and showing their spirit. This
award winning picture is of Rose, a “self-identified” little girl. The picture shows a young girl, surrounded by
her personality: wearing dresses, with long hair, surrounded by teddy bears and dolls, in a feminine room.

The next outing is in Stoney Creek on Sunday, October 19th. More information will be provided
closer to the date. There will be some great opportunities for architectural and nature shots. It will
again be early in the morning and when you look at the images below, you can see why.
!
Please note: On the signup sheet, please take note of the outing leader’s phone number, so if you are
a little late or wander off, you can keep in touch.
