MEET THE NEW IAJ PRESIDENT
M
rs. Karen Bhoorasingh emerged
as the new President of the Insurance Association of Jamaica (IAJ) at the
Association’s Annual General Meeting held in May.
She is the first female from
the General Insurance Industry to be elected to the
Presidency of the 10 year old
organisation
which
was
formed from a merger between the Life Insurance
Companies Association of
Jamaica (LICA) and the Jamaica Association of General
Insurance
Companies
(JAGIC) in 2005.
Mrs.
Jacqueline
Sharp,
who
served as IAJ’s first female
President (2009/2010) was
from the life sector. Mrs.
Bhoorasingh succeeds Mr
Hugh Reid, President of Scotia Life Insurance Company
who served as President of
the IAJ since April 2012.
Mrs. Bhoorasingh is the
President of Guardian General Insurance Jamaica Limited, recently formed through
the acquisition of Globe Insurance Company by the
Guardian Group owned,
West Indies Alliance Insurance company of which she
was General Manger. She
had previously served on the
IAJ Executive as Vice President—General. Mrs. Bhoorasingh’s love for insurance
started at an early age when
she worked during the holidays at her family’s insurance brokerage business in
May Pen. This career did not
come by accident and was
further cemented when she
saw the benefits of insurance
after the devastation of many
Jamaican homes during the
onslaught of hurricane Gilbert. Mrs. Bhoorasingh holds
a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration from UWI.
She is an Associate of the
Chartered Institute of Insurers (ACII) in the United Kingdom, and studied at the University of London where she
received her Bachelor of
Laws. A graduate of the
Norman Manley Law School,
Karen was called to the bar
in 2009.

R
oad Safety continues to be one of the major
interests of the IAJ and we are delighted to be
part of this informative activity which brings
forcibly to the attention of the public the need
for Road Safety practices in Jamaica.
IAJ was booth holder at the 2014 Driver and Traffic
Safety Expo held by Grennell’s Driving School on Saturday June 21 at Jamaica College Playfield and Auditorium. There were many Booth Holders showcasing
their products and services and IAJ was pleasantly
surprised when the IAJ Booth was declared THE

IAJ PARTNERS WITH MINISTY OF EDUCATION ON MATHEMATICS
he Insurance Association of Jamaica (IAJ) partner with
the Ministry of Education once more to wage a Mathematics Revolution in Jamaica. Building a Maths culture is a
necessity in an environment which has a tendency to
have an aversion to dealing with numbers. Proficiency in the subject has become a national imperative, as it is the basis of subjects like Science, Technology and Engineering – areas that play a
vital role in our country’s economic development at this time.
IAJ President Mrs. Karen Bhoorasingh in her remarks to attendees
said:
“Mathematics is central to developing logical and critical thinking
skills and also an analytical approach to solving problems, attributes once adopted would go a long way in dealing with our chal- Hon. Ronald Thwaites, Minister of Education (1st Right) in

here in Kingston involving 270 teachers and 90 schools.
The insurance industry has a history of supporting mathematics
education. In fact for over thirty years, we sponsored Mathematics
Competitions among schools island wide, under the inspirational
leadership of the late Executive Director of the Life Insurance
Companies Association (LICA), Vivian Rochester. He nurtured the
programme with one of your stalwarts, Mrs. Terry Tomlinson who
served for many years as the President of the Mathematics
Teachers Association of Jamaica.“ This played a critical role in
helping to provide Actuaries for the Jamaican insurance industry.

and was an eye opener to many who were not
familiar with the plight of homeless persons.

HAPPENINGS
Sagicor Spreads Its Wings
Excerpt from Jamaica Observer of Friday June 6,
2014
The integration of RBC Bank Jamaica
and Sagicor Group Jamaica (SGJ) will
take about two years for the group to
'digest', said Richard Byles president of
SGJ. “The acquisition will capture the
imagination of executives over the
period. The acquisition of RBC Jamaica and the merger with Sagicor Bank
is our major investment and it will take
two years to fully digest this acquisition," Byles told shareholders at the annual general meeting held at Sagicor
headquarters in New Kingston on Tuesday. "By that I mean, actually owning the
company is one thing but putting it together is another. Getting the technology
and the systems going is a third thing
and those challenges take time." Sagicor
announced in January that it would acquire RBC bank for $9 billion which
closely reflects the book value of the Jamaica operations. Royal Bank of Canada
shortly thereafter stated that it would take
a CAD$60 million ($5.9 billion) loss on
the sale of its Jamaican operations to
SGJ.
IAJ and JIIC sponsored Trophies for the Robyn Foreman
Junior Debate Competition. The event proceeded with
much enthusiasm among the youngsters who participated
in the competition. Trophies were presented to winners in
the various categories.
Orville Johnson, Executive Director , IAJ (2nd from right)
and Rachel McKinley (1st Right) from JIIC took time out to
take a snapshot with the winners.
