It is a prestigious award for a Diasporan who not only followed his or her dream and achieved success but who has also given back to their community - following that success - in a selfless and significant way. The awardee, through his or her inspirational role would have contributed significantly to Jamaica or a Jamaican community in their host country. ELIGIBILITY To be eligible, the candidate must: Be Jamaican by birth or naturalization. Have made a worthwhile contribution to the development of Jamaica or a Jamaican community in the Diaspora over a period of not less than ten (10) years. Have made his or her contribution in the public’s interest. Have had (through initiative or voluntary activities) a positive effect on a significant number of members of the Jamaican community. Have made his or her contribution and gained achievements while acting as a private citizen; NOT as an appointed or elected government official. Have received neither a Jamaican National honour, nor the Governor-General’s Achievement Award Be nominated by a Diaspora Organization or a Jamaica affiliated organization in the region of residence Persons who have been the recipient of a National Award are not eligible to be considered for an award in the Governor-General’s Programme of Excellence. THE SELECTION COMMITTEE A selection committee set up by regional member groups of the Jamaica Diaspora Organization (JDO), will independently review all nominations to ensure that they meet the selection standards and eligibility criteria for the award. Following an extensive evaluation process, a determination will be made on who is most deserving of the award. It is crucial that the Proposer give full details of the nominee so as to assist this process. Being nominated does NOT guarantee that a candidate will receive an award. GGPE: 101W Issue Date: 01-May-2014 Page 6 of 7 Governor-General’s Programme For Excellence Jamaica Diaspora SELECTION CRITERIA The Jamaica Diaspora Award for Excellence pays tribute to Jamaican success across all walks of life who has contributed significantly to community development in Jamaica or Jamaican communities in different parts of the world. It emphasizes ‘achievement’ and highlights ‘inspirational role models’. The Vision of the Selection Committee is to: Highlight the positive contributions the Jamaican Diaspora Community makes to Jamaica’s development. Recognize and reward the contributions of migrants to the Jamaican community. Help promote new thinking. Highlight and recognize partnerships and achievements between Jamaica and the Diaspora. Highlight the entrepreneurial spirit and resilience of the Jamaican Diaspora. Honour what is right about Jamaicans. THE APPLICATION PROCESS Persons who meet the eligibility requirements must be nominated by a Diaspora Organization or a Jamaica Affiliated Organization in the region of residence. An Application Form must be completed by the nominee. The Application Form is available from Jamaican Consulates or High Commission Offices in Canada, the U.S.A and England as well as via the internet at: www.kingshouse.gov.jm. A candidate’s application MUST include the following: Personal and Contact Information Information about active and significant service towards the development of Jamaica or Jamaican communities. Details of projects worked on and offices held. Proposer’s Name, Position and Contact details. Additional requirements include: Names and contact details for two (2) Character references One (1) Letter of Recommendation attesting to the nominee’s personal character and commitment. The letter must be from a Justice of the Peace or Notary Public. The letter MUST NOT be from a relative, roommate or partner. GGPE: 101W Issue Date: 01-May-2014 Page 7 of 7
