President’s Message October 2014 The 14th Annual Butterfly Conference will begin at 8:00am on Saturday, November 15th at the Edison Ford Winter Estates for those who are interested. SOUTHWEST FLORIDA ORCHID SOCIETY NEWSLSETTER MEETS THE SECOND TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH AT 7:30 PM AT THE FAITH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Our big auction is Oct. 14th, with the doors opening at 6:30 and the actual auction beginning at 7:00. Please be generous with donations of plants and the purchase of new items of interest. We have advertised this auction with the church and local newspapers, so we are expecting a large turnout. It would be helpful if some members brought some additional snacks to help with this crowd. See you there! The membership that was present for the September meeting voted unanimously to adopt and ratify the revised By-Laws, and the Membership list is up to date. Now, we can go ahead and print the Membership booklet for this year. I will try to have that done by the next meeting. The following is the current list of nominees for the Board of Trustees – anyone interested in adding their name to the list please see Gary Murza. Both Dan and Barb have asked for anyone to step up and take over their positions, as they have been doing these functions for 8-10 years and feel it is time to let someone else have an opportunity to participate. Both are more than willing to stay on and train their replacements and continue to offer any support a new member would find helpful. Please think about this. • • • • • • • • • • President: Vice President: Treasurer: Asst. Pam Hyy) Steven Bessellieu Michael Staskie Francis Dames Southwest Florida Orchid Society October 2014 4 Minutes of the August SWFOS Meeting The general meeting of the Southwest Florida Orchid Society was called to order by President James Schooley at 7:30 p.m. on September 9, 2014. He announced that the church had sent a thank-you letter to the club for installing the new planting of orchids on the trees outside the church. The proposed by-laws were voted on and passed by the membership in a unanimous vote. James encouraged anyone interested in running for an office to let him know before the election in November. He did tell us that Bill Overton will be running for the office of President in the upcoming vote. October 14th will be our annual auction, which will take the place of a general meeting that month. Our program, led by Barb Murza, was a hands-on workshop on mounting orchids onto supports. Orchid plants, wood, tree fern, wire, and tools were made available to all the members, who each mounted their own orchid to take home. Barb showed us the basic techniques to follow plus a few of her hints on how to ensure success. She said that the only rule you have to follow is to firmly secure the plant so it cannot wiggle or move.
