RHS Gold Medal in London!
We were very pleased and proud to be awarded another gold
medal for our display at the London Orchid Show last month.
The colourful exhibit obviously impressed the judges and the
visitors enjoyed it too! (above & right)
The RHS also awarded us for our large plant of Bulbophyllum
purpureorachis, a Certificate of Cultural Commendation was
given for its large size and good culture. It had many twisted
stems with brown, beetle-like flowers along its length. We will
be propagating from several of these plants this year, please
let us know if you are interested in a plant. (below left)
On display at the Botanical
Art Show within the orchid
show were 2 official
paintings of our awarded
Coelogyne and Dracula
from last November’s
meeting. Every orchid that
is awarded is painted by the
official orchid artist so the
details of the award are
accurate and kept for ever.

Cymbidium meristems
We have a selection of young plants of 4 different Cymbidium hybrids. They are all good
varieties, cloned from proven stock to give strong plants that will flower well. They will have
large, showy flowers in another 2-3 years with a little growing on. Keep in a little warmth
and in shade in summer whilst they are young to get them larger more quickly then when
they have reached flowering size keep cooler in winter.
Usually £10 each, buy all four for only £30!
Earliesue ‘Paddy’– soft pale creamy- green, plain flower
Scotts Sunrise – orangey-red
Rincon Fairy – a good pink shade
Florisun – yellow with a red blush and lip
Prosthechea Edith Arakawa
NEWLY AVAILABLE seedlings that we have raised ourselves of this
primary cross between Prosthechea radiata and Prosthechea
prismatocarpa. They are likely to be flowering in around 2 years time
with heads of green and pink speckled flowers, hopefully with scent.
Cool growing and strong little plants.
Something new for your collection, only £10!
May Notes: Make sure you have your maximum summer shading on the greenhouse now, the sun is
quite strong when we see it and leaves could start to get a slight ‘sun tan’ if they are exposed to too much
bright light. As the sun gets stronger then the greenhouse or conservatory tends to get warmer too so more
regular watering and spraying to keep the humidity up is necessary. When growing in the home, use blinds
or net curtains to give shade. Create humidity by spraying the foliage and growing plants together. With
types such as Miltoniopsis and Oncidium, the misting on the foliage will help new leaves grow up smoothly.
If they are too dry they can become stuck together in a concertina fashion which is unsightly and can cause
problems later when the flower spikes try to grow up from between the leaves. Increased warmth will also
increase pests so keep a vigilant eye out for them and get rid of them as soon as you see anything.
