REEES
About the Russian, East European
& Eurasian Studies Centre
The Russian East European & Eurasian Studies Centre (REEES)
was launched by the Faculty of Law to enter into new fields of
research in the East with a focus on countries from Belarus
eastwards to Central Asia. REEES aims at optimising and coordinating the existing research potential at the Faculty of Law
by linking the expertise of faculty members and individual institutes with outside partners. Other closely related objetives are
the development and deepening of inter-cultural relations and
co-operation in the region.

Introduction
Programme
With a view to the entry into force of the Eurasian Economic Union
by 1 January 2015, REEES is devoting this semester opening to the
law and politics of Eurasian Integration. Similar to the EU as a Union
built on Law, for the Eurasian Economic Union law will be the main
vehicle of institutional development. In addition, the Eurasian
Economic Union will face many legal and political challenges in the
region related to the ongoing processes of political and economic
liberalisation, the struggle between competing European and Eurasian integration schemes, implementation of public international
law, in particular the correlation between the principles of territorial
integrity and self-determination of peoples, the legal status of the
Caspian Sea, realisation of the provisions of the Energy Charter
Treaty, the struggle against terrorism and extremism, sustainable
use of trans-boundary rivers, protection of environment, cooperation
with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the increasing influence of China, etc.
25 September (optional)
Oktoberfest opening in Munich
Visit of the Oktoberfest is optional, but is an opportunity that should not be missed! From Munich you can
either go by train to Graz (6 hrs. tickets starting at 39
euros), bus or plane.
If there are enough students interested in visiting, we
could try to organize it as a group event.
This Eurasian semester opening will bring together students from
a number of partner institutions in the region with local and international students in Graz. In addition, the international students‘
conference on 4th October will provide a venue for the participants
of the winter school „EU Law in the North Caucasus“ (EULINC),
held in Pyatigorsk (Russian Federation) and the summer school
„EU Law in the South Caucasus“ (EULISC), held in Batumi (Georgia),
to discuss their individual research designs in EU Law and European Studies.
