The Parent-Teacher Association, or PTA, was founded in 1897. Its mission was, and is, to advocate on behalf of the school children. In the early 1900’s, the PTA fought to establish kindergarten as part of the public school system. In the 1920’s, it recommended universal physical education. In the 1940’s, it petitioned for federally funded hot lunches to be served in school. In the 1950’s, together with the Red Cross the PTA was a driving force to promote the dispensing of the Salk vaccine for the prevention of polio, which led to mandatory immunization. In the 1960’s, it launched a campaign against the dangers of smoking. In the 1970’s, it targeted Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention. In 2001, within 24 hours of the attacks on New York City and Washington D.C., the PTA launched the Helping Children Cope With Tragedy website. The list of PTA accomplishments is a long and illustrious one. I invite you to visit www.pta.org to learn more about the history of your Parent Teacher Association. The PTA was established at Sheridan Park Elementary in 1978. Here is but a short list of what we have accomplished so far: Math Super Stars Meet the Masters Accelerated Reader Red Ribbon Week Reimbursing teachers for classroom supplies Providing supplies to teachers and the school Subsidizing the cost to parents for field trips Coordinating volunteers for field trips and for school events Holiday Shop Student of the Month and much more! You may pick up your first box of chocolates (one per student) at Open House. Once you sell your first box of chocolates, and turn money in to the PTA, you are welcome to pick up an additional box. You will be able to sell as many boxes as possible before the announced deadline. This will help pay for student activities and incentives, and it gives you a chance to win fun prizes! These chocolate bars pretty much sell themselves. Neighbors, friends, family and coworkers love to support children and their schools, and at $1 per bar, this is a great way for them to help. (Please do not let your children go door-todoor unless they are chaperoned.) There will be st nd rd prizes for the 1 , 2 and 3 place students who sell the most chocolate. The parents of the 3 winners will also win a prize (one per student). The top selling classes (most money collected per student) for these three groups, Kindergarten through 2nd grade, 3rd through 5th grade, and the A-Team Classes, will also win a prize. The three winning teachers will also receive their own chocolate bar! More details will be on the flyer/permission slip that you will receive in a few days. Not only does joining PTA benefit the school by supporting valuable programs, such as Accelerated Reader, and enriching events, such as Red Ribbon Week, it also benefits you! Please visit www.pta.org to see all of the discounts you can take advantage of by simply joining. You may purchase PTA annual memberships, Sparky T-shirts and our new Scientist Sparky T-shirts individually, or in combination with our discount packages. Also back this year are Sparky barrettes and headbands. Sparky the Panther, our school mascot, is featured on all of these items, and our school motto, “We are Sparktacular!” is printed on the back of the t-shirts. In addition to the regular maroon and white Sparky t-shirts, you may also purchase our new Scientist Sparky T-shirts for just $13. While any Sparky T-shirt can be worn any time, students are encouraged to wear them on our various Spirit Days, and they are required to be worn on field trips. A Sparky Store order form is included in this packet, and is also available in the front office or on the school website. Please remember, by purchasing an annual membership, you are helping your child’s school, but are not committing to volunteer or attend meetings; however we do encourage you to do so. Anyone can join, including parents, grandparents, friends, relatives, businesses and even students! ACCELERATED READER The PTA is proud to continue its sponsorship of Sheridan Park’s Accelerated Reader (also known as “AR”) program for this school year. It was because of this past year’s amazing fundraising success that we were able to purchase this valuable reading incentive program. Accelerated Reader is a software program that is available to be used in the classroom, and has been shown to improve reading comprehension. Whenever a student finishes a book that is at their reading level, they will have the opportunity to complete an AR quiz. Points will be earned based on the quiz results. The PTA will be rewarding the students throughout the year for their reading achievements. You will receive more detailed information from your child’s teacher; however, you may visit www.ARBookfinder.com to find eligible books. We also encourage you to search the Broward County Library catalog at www.broward.org/library and check out your book selections. SHOPAROO Sheridan Park has a hassle free way to raise funds for our school. Shoparoo is an app available on smartphones and tablets that lets you use your grocery and drug store receipts (including Target, Publix, Walmart, Winn Dixie, Walgreens, CVS, Costco, etc.) to earn money for the school. Simply snap a picture of your receipt and upload it to Shoparoo. When you do, Shoparoo donates cash to Sheridan Park. It’s that easy! Just download the app and designate “Sheridan Park Elementary” as your cause and start snapping away! Visit www.shoparoo.com for more info! SPE ON FACEBOOK “Like” Sheridan Park Elementary on Facebook and keep up-to-date on school events! COLLECTIONS The PTA collects General Mills “Box Tops for Education” and Campbell’s “Labels for Education” throughout the year. These are worth money to our school. If you use products from these companies, be sure to send the labels in a package with your child’s name and teacher’s name written on it. Every class has a collection envelope. Each month, the class that collects the most Labels and/or Box Tops wins a pizza party, compliments of Joe’s Pizza & Pasta. The runner up class gets a cookie and milk party. It’s one of the easiest ways to raise money for the school, using products you probably already have in your home! JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS National PTA® selected Just Between Friends as the PTA membership management and communication website. Just Between Friends was chosen because it exhibits “best-in-class” capabilities for a private, secure system. This will be Sheridan Park PTA’s second year utilizing Just Between Friends to send email blasts. When you provide your email address on the Sparky Store order form or at the Open House email sign-in sheet, we will then enter you into JBF and you will receive an email inviting you to join us. If we do not get your email address, you may sign-up at www.justbetweenfriends.com. On the home page you will see an "Accept Your Group Invite" button. After you click on that button, it will ask you for an invitation code, enter 9791tok. You will then be able to register. You may also use the site to manage your own daily schedule.
