PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Callaway High School student Raven Lowe led the Pledge of Allegiance. She is a Battalion Commander for Chargers Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. She is also on the JROTC staff, drill team and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) team. Cadet Lowe is a member of the National Honor Society and is a member of the Callaway tennis team. Cadet Lowe is a senior with a 3.2 grade point average. She served as a Junior Page for the Mississippi State Legislator in 2010. She aspires to become a teacher, principal, and one day, a superintendent for a school district. Her favorite scripture is Phillipians 4:13: I believe that I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. PRAYER OF INVOCATION Rev. Melvin Collins, Sr., led the Prayer of Invocation. He received his formative education in Terry, MS, and later graduated from Raymond High School. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Master’s degree of Theology and a Doctoral degree of Theology from New Foundation Theological Seminary. Currently, Rev. Collins is Dean of Bachelor’s Studies at New Foundation Theological Seminary. He also serves as the Dean of Congress for the Counties of MS Baptist District Association. Reverend Collins is author of his first book entitled, “God’s Revelation: A Compelling Image of God’s Achievable Future for Humanity.” Rev. Collins is the undershepherd of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, MS. Dr. Collins is married to Mrs. Sonya Denise Collins and together they have four children: Desaree, Corey, Calabe and Melvin, Jr. Rev. Collins believes in preaching, teaching, and reaching out to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His favorite scripture is And we know that all things work together for the good of those who love Him: Romans 8:28. JPS Board member Jed Oppenheim presented certificates of appreciation to Cadet Raven Lowe and Rev. Melvin Collins. 1 JPS BOARD MEETINGS: The Board of Trustees holds two regular meetings per month. The next regular JPS Board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. September 16, 2014, in the Board Meeting Room at 621 South State Street. President Street Jackson, MS 39201 BOARD APPROVES STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES SPECIALIST The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees approved the position of a Student Support Service Specialist. The Specialist will support the Student Services office with the new Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) testing standards that were implemented this (2014-2015) school year. Testing will occur every three weeks during the entire school year. The Specialist will maintain and or exceed JPS and MDE Student Appeals and Student Assessment requirements. This position will help the District’s goal of hiring and retaining committed qualified staff. BOARD APPROVES EMERGENCY PLAN The JPS Board of Trustees approved the Jackson Public School District’s Emergency Management Plan as mandated by the Mississippi Department of Education. The Mississippi Department of Education mandates that each school district have their Emergency Plan updated annually and submitted to their school board for approval. E-mail: [email protected] The Office of Campus Enforcement has designed the District’s guidelines and policies to assist those who are responsible for the health and safety of students and staff while they are at school, on school grounds, on their way to or from school, and involved in school-sponsored activities. This Emergency Plan helps the District ensure that each school and building site is safe and secure for students and staff. Facebook.com/JacksonPublicSchools Twitter.com/DrCedrickGray The JPS Board of Trustees approved an agreement between Jobs for Mississippi Graduates (JMG) and the Jackson Public School District to provide school-towork training as well as incentives to stay in school for selected students at all seven high schools and the Capital City Alternative schools. JMG is a private non-profit organization that provides at-risk public schools with the transitional skills they need to be successful after school in their families, communities and workplaces. The JMG program includes school-to-career training, job training and drop-out prevention. In an effort to provide opportunities for students to stay in school, graduate and be prepared for either college or the workforce, the JMG program supports the goals of the District with a focus to increase academic performance and decrease dropouts by providing the training and incentives needed to encourage students to stay in school and graduate. APPROVAL OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN MILLCREEK OF MAGEE SCHOOLS AND JPS The Board of Trustees approves an agreement between Millcreek of Magee Schools and the Jackson Public School District. Millcreek is a private facility recognized by the Mississippi Department of Education as an approved child Board Briefs, September 2, 2014 JACKSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2 ANNOUNCEMENTS MAEP FUNDING SURVEY The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees is considering whether to join pending litigation or otherwise support the pending litigation effort to sue the Mississippi Legislature, on behalf of public school districts, for its failure to fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP). The Board requests public comments to its MAEP Funding Survey by September 16, 2014. ADVANCED PARENT SURVEY The Jackson Public School District is committed to working together with parents/guardians and the community to support our students and families. Therefore, we are asking parents to share their input in the 2014–2015 AdvancED Parent Survey. The survey period ends November 4, 2014. 3RD GRADE LITERACY FORUMS JPS will host parent forums on the 3rd Grade Literacy Promotion Act. The first forum will be held at 6 p.m. September 25, 2014, at Bates Elem., for Forest Hill feeder elementary schools. JPS PARENT CONFERENCE The 2014 JPS Parent Conference will be held at 5:30 p.m. October 2, 2014, at Callaway High. APPROVAL OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN MILLCREEK OF MAGEE SCHOOLS AND JPS (Continued) placement facility. Students served at this facility are enrolled and referred by school district placement, the Department of Human Services (DHS) and parent placement. The purpose of this agreement is to establish working procedures in the provision of services at Millcreek’s Magee, MS and Clinton, MS treatment facilities to the District’s students eligible for special education services. Millcreek of Magee Schools has been appointed by MDE as an approved service provider. This agreement contributes to the overall education, emotion and social skills improvement for each student identified for services at Millcreek of Magee Schools. 3RD GRADE LITERACY ACT PARENT FORUMS Jackson Public Schools will host parent forums to inform parents about the 3rd Grade Literacy Promotion Act. Forums will be held until November 6 to reach families in all seven JPS high school feeder patterns. All forums begin at 6 p.m. and are scheduled for elementary schools in each feeder pattern as follows: September 18 – Callaway feeder, at North Jackson Elementary September 25 – Forest Hill feeder, at Bates Elementary October 9 – Jim Hill feeder, at Baker Elementary October 16 – Lanier feeder, at Galloway Elementary October 23 – Murrah feeder, at McWillie Elementary October 30 – Provine feeder, at Lake Elementary November 6 – Wingfield feeder, at Wilkins Elementary Mississippi's 3rd Grade Literacy Promotion Act was adopted into law in 2013 and goes into effect during the 2014–2015 school year. The law requires third graders who can't read proficiently at the end of the third grade to be retained. The Parent Forums are one of the extra measures JPS is taking to ensure third grade students and parents are aware and prepared for this new law.
