It was fine when it was busy, but a lot of the time you’d be standing around for hours praying for a customer to arrive. It all got so bad, I had to quit after six months. Then I saw this ad for a waiter, went for the interview and got the job. It’s a good job. Where else could you go to the most fashionable restaurant in town for free every night? But seriously, it’s not for everyone. You really do need the right personality. For a start, you have to take pride in what you do, and of course you have to like people. If you don’t then you really shouldn’t be doing this because your main task is to help people to have a special evening out. It’s very hard work, and I mean hard. But it’s extremely rewarding when you see people appreciating the food and the service. It makes everything worthwhile. There are the downsides, of course: the difficult customers you have to deal with. That’s the worst thing about the job. However hard you try, some people are just never satisfied, never happy. They never have a smile on their face, never say thank you. They expect you to be polite to them but think that because they’re paying a lot of money they can be as rude as they want to you. I’m always glad to say goodbye to them. And some of their complaints! Don’t get me wrong; most of the customers are really nice, but there are those who complain about stupid things. Typically, it’s the less knowledgeable restaurant-goers who cause the most trouble, basically because they don’t know much about the food they’re eating. For example, they’ll complain that the Mexican dish they’ve ordered is too hot, or they’ll ask for a dessert wine and complain that it’s too sweet. But I think the stupidest comment I heard was not about the food. It came from a family which came one lunchtime with four young children. They were actually unhappy about the restaurant because there were too many other children there. The head waiter tried to reason with them but in the end they were asked to leave. This is a great job for someone of my age, in my position. I intend to give it one more year and then I’d like to go to university. And after that, who knows? Maybe I could open my own restaurant, but this time I’ll manage it. And anybody being rude to my waiters will be invited to leave, politely but firmly. 1.
