May 2014 THE WINGED WHEEL Monthly Newsletter of the Kilkenny Cycling Club, South Australia - May 2014 WE’RE BACK ON TRACK Welcome Back Track This month isn’t just a welcome back to another edition of the Winged Wheel it also heralds the start of a new, busy winter track programme at the SuperDrome hosted by Kilkenny. We are going to need plenty of help to run these events so if you’re willing to help out we can certainly find a job that matches your skills and availability. On the junior front April was a big month with Kilkenny well represented in the Santos Junior Tour and even some dads took to the road again with another Dads n Lads entry in the fourth Cyclosportif round at Woodside on April 6 . (c) Photograph pinched from the FaceBook page of Michael Young Above: The promise of a ripper track season for 2014 In recognition of the wonderful work our much beloved Life Member Helen Baird did with Junior riders in SA cycling, the Kilkenny Cycling Club is pleased to announce the staging of a major new track race series for junior cyclists. The Helen Baird Memorial Junior 300 series comprises 8 race events (nights) starting with the evening of Saturday May 10 and with final event and presentations on Saturday August 23 coinciding with the running of the Kilkenny 300 lap senior race event. Junior riders will accumulate a total of 150 laps over the course of the series. This is expected to be one of the most prestigious annual fixtures on every SA riders cycling calendar as each race night will also include a programme of racing for senior riders too. May 10 will include a series of 3 lap derbys on the programme for junior riders while seniors will enjoy Keirin, scratch and snowball points to compliment the programme. Subsequent race nights will be held on May 24, July 5, 12 & 19 and August 2, 9 with the series final on August 23rd. Placings in each race will count toward an overall point score for the series, with the highest score from riders who accumulate the total of 150 laps being awarded the Helen Baird Memorial Trophy. Athletes are encouraged to enter online early to avoid late fees and payment wil be accepted at sign on. The first event is to be held on the evening of Saturday May 10th with rider-sign on between 4:00 and 4:45pm and racing at 5:0o www.kilkennycc.org.au Full race details and race programmes will be available on our the website In this edition we also hear how a serendipitous phone call landed Kilkenny’s Jai Angsuthasawit a cycling adventure in a country where the colours of that nation’s flag are uncannily similar to our own Kilkenny Club Colours for Jai this must have been a bit like coming home. May should also see some progress on the upgrade of our homeground velodrome at Hanson Reserve with the City of Port Adelaide Enfield commencing consultation process for both the Hanson Reserve Master Plan and Council’s 201415 Draft Annual Business Plan which includes the $550,000 set aside for track upgrades. If you’d like to see something included in the newsletter that’s not there or think one of our members, athletes or volunteers deserves a special mention please send a note to us here and we’ll include it in a future edition. In the meantime keep pedalling. The course which commenced at the Bird in Hand Winery and then looped around and up the back of Bird in Hand Road included a lengthy stretch of gravel which put an end to the ambitions of many teams on high end bikes who did not finish the course. Kilkenny was well represented again by Team Holland who rode under their KILKENNY JUNIORS IN THE SANTOS JUNIOR TOUR Although none of our Kilkenny riders finished on the podium this year our club can be proud of how they performed and their conduct as junior athletes. Tom and Doug Beddome together with Harrison Lodge contributed to the strong performance of the CDCC Top Guns team who finished third in a category that saw a margin of only 5 seconds per lap between the first and third fastest teams of the day. Kilkenny’s junior riders enjoyed the beautiful Barossa Valley on the weekend of April 12 & 13th representing Kilkenny in the Central Districts Cycling Club’s 47th Santos Junior Tour. A strong cohort of interstate riders took the challenge right up to the local favourites and took home wins in every category in which they participated. -2- The Centrals Club are to be congratulated too on an event well run together with the Kilkenny members who provided assistance as commissaires and marshalls. The new location at the South Australian Company Store, Angaston was superb. The success of the event means entries are sure to grow for next year. Kilkenny riders included, Peter Webb, Thomas Higginbottom, Mitchell Bails, Hannah Seeliger, Telyka Agius, Luke Piro, Connor Butterfield, Harrison Lodge & Jarrad Drizners. Well done to you all. JAI’S CARRIBBEAN ADVENTURE Njisane 3 Day Track Cycling Festival by Jai Angsuthasawit I recently returned from Trinidad and Tobago where I competed in the ‘Njisane Philip 3 Day Track Cycling Festival’ along with my Junior Worlds team mate Pat Constable. Njisane Philip earned widespread recognition in Jamaica after his fourth place finish in the Men’s Sprint at the London 2012 Olympics, and placed 2nd in the Men’s Sprint, Round 1 – Manchester, 2013-14 UCI Track Cycling World Cup. The event is part of Njisane’s plan to When I first got the call asking if I would host an annual high profile event to like to travel to Trinidad and Tobago give his countrymen a chance to see for an all expenses paid trip with some some of the world’s best riders. track racing thrown in I thought it was a joke - at that point I didn’t even know It is his aim to give some of the up and coming Trinidadian riders a chance to where Trinidad was. compete against some of the world’s It happened quickly, from the initial call best. up to receiving my flight details was about three weeks and what sounded With all riders staying for a minimum of like a joke turned into an amazing ten days it also gives his family a chance opportunity to travel to the Caribbean to show off their country and culture. for ten days, three of which were to The event is unlike anything we’ve ever race and the rest to get experience seen in Australia with an astonishing Caribbean culture in a luxury setting. budget of around $3 million ($US) Not only were we staying in one of the including sponsorship. most beautiful places on earth we were hosted in Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain with the other international cyclists & managers flown for this event. We were transported to the racing in air conditioned coaches with police escort, making us feel like super stars. Over the three nights, we raced at two different venues - both outdoor concrete tracks. The first night was at Arima Velodrome a 400m track and the next two nights were at Skinner Park Velodrome which was a 333m track. As these were spectator’s events, the programme was dominated by scratch races and to liven things up riders were offered random cash prizes by the announcers during the races to do things like chase down breakaway riders. Apart from the racing there was also a half time intermission each night with live entertainment from many of the country’s top performers which made for a great atmosphere at a track event. I flew to Trinidad & Tobago without really knowing what to expect and returned home in the greatest of respect and admiration for Njisane Philip and his family who have chosen to use his fame and cycling talent to selflessly promote opportunities for others athletes in his country to excel in the sport. Naturally, I would not hesitate to go back again if I was invited, and by this time next year their new indoor track will be up and running.
