Camp Five!
Camp Is Back!
Inside This Issue:
School’s out and we are
ready for summer! Bring on
the heat, the water, hiking,
nature, and so much more.
While winter seemed to drag
on forever, it gave us plenty
of time to add a bunch of
new, exciting programs, spiff
up our tried and true KBY
originals, and create new
connections to make this
summer at Camp Kum-BaYah the best one yet.
Are you ready for theater
in the woods? What about
hiking part of the
Appalachian Trail? Or how
about making your own flint
and arrow with a worldrenowned flint maker? We
are so excited to provide
opportunities that you won’t
find anywhere else in the
Central Virginia area. We are
working with some of the best
and brightest to bring
Lynchburg campers awesome
programming.
Whatever your fancy, from
drama to swimming and from
letter-boxing, to zip-lining,
we have something for
everyone at Camp KBY.
We’ve even added in
programming for teenagers
age 12-15 years-old, Camp
Adventure. For more
information on all of our
programs, visit our website.

Exciting Camp KBY 2014 Summer Programs
Theater Camp: Romeo, O Romeo. Wherefor art thou Romeo? Get your theater on with the
help of Randolph College’s Wildcat Theater Conservatory. Camp KBY and the Wildcat
thespians have joined forces to provide a day of exciting drama and adventure:
Theater in the Woods. A perfect blend of the great outdoors and your inner
thespian, this day of theater camp focuses on using theater to develop life
skills for children of all ages. New this year: WildCat Theatre Conservatory
and Camp Kum-Ba-Yah will collaborate to provide a full day experience for
grades rising k-2.
Jumpstart Camp: Junior Camp is perfect for our younger campers, ages 5-8 years old.
Designed to help younger campers integrate into camp life, each camper will join a small
camp group and for this week only, the entire Camp KBY grounds will be devoted to junior
campers. Activities are geared to helping younger children learn how to interact in a group
setting, how to follow directions, and how to be more independent. This option is great for
first time younger campers. They will participate in the same activities as regular camp, like
garden activities, zip lines, swimming, archery, tree house and learn all about environmental
stewardship.
Camp Expedition: Camp Expedition is back for a third summer. Another successful
collaboration between Amazement Square and Camp KBY, Camp Expedition will focus on
environmental stewardship and exploration. Campers will skin-dive with flippers, snorkels
and goggles, make their own nature book, dissect fish, and raft on the Tye River! While each
day will be action packed and full of fun, campers will learn about watersheds, water pollution,
and how these things impact our rivers. Camp Expedition is for children ages 8-13 years old.
Camp Explorer, a joint camp with Camp KBY and
Amazement Square, has returned for a second summer.
Focusing on outdoor wilderness adventure, campers will
learn archery skills by making their own bows, arrows,
and flint making, taught by world-renowned flintmaker,
Eric Callahan. Campers will also learn Native American
survival techniques, learn how to build their own shelters
and survive in the wilderness. Fun geo-caching in the wild
will teach campers about GPS positioning. Plus, campers
will spend the day hiking The Cole Mountain Trail on the Appalachian Trail, led by Kate
Macklin, who has hiked the entire AT trail, from Georgia to Maine. Camp Explorer is for
campers ages 8-13 years old.
Apple Grafting Workshop
Camp KBY has partnered with Randolph College to create an apple sapling
garden, and we will be offering apple-grafting workshops.
Environmental Education at Camp KBY!
Bring your classroom to the great outdoors and
let the learning take on a life of its own. Camp
KBY is now offering school field trips for
Kindergarten through Grade 5 with place-based
environmental learning experiences.
No school on a teacher workday? We’ve got
you covered. Camp KBY has developed a
Nature Camp series for teacher workdays and
other school holidays where children can
explore our garden, forest, pond and stream as
well as experience some of our ropes challenge
course activities. Never one to stop collaborating, we are now working with the local chapter
of the Virginia Master Naturalists. Our local naturalists are providing Camp KBY with
much-appreciated volunteer help for both education programs and general stewardship
activities. One of these stewardship events recently involved the planting of trees around the
pond and wetland that were donated by the Senior Lawyers Conference through their Trees for
Virginia program. Camp KBY environmental education is a year-round experience- why wait
for next summer? Sign your camper up this fall for our teacher workday Nature Camp.
Our Newest Board Member
Camp Kum-Ba-Yah is excited to introduce Kristine
Lloyd, our newest board member. Kristine is the PTO

Garden Club. She is the Vice President of REVPAR
International, Inc., where she has over 20+ years of

hotel types, and market and financial analysis. Her work
travel occasionally allows her to sneak in visits to
interesting public gardens.
A graduate of UVA, and a mother of three children, all
of whom are Camp KBY alums, Kristine has been a longtime supporter of our camp and brings years of

the KBY family. Please join us
