Universities Kendo Taikai(completion) 2014 report
After months of training, EUKC embarked on a 7 hour train journey to Canterbury, Kent for
the UK Universities Kendo Taikai, February 15-16th 2014. Representing Edinburgh
University, 15 members of EUKC competed in both team and individual competitions.
Three teams, two teams competing in the Kyu grade competition (maximum of 2 years’
experience) and one team in the open competition. Day one consisted of open and kyu grade
individuals; Sofia Ferreira Gonzalez (Edinburgh) taking gold in a 2-0 win against
Gloucestershire in Womens Kyu while Edinburgh vs Edinburgh in Mens Kyu finals, Alesis
Novik winning Savva Pronin 2-0 bringing home gold and silver.
Team competitions day two, Kyu team finals, Edinburgh A vs Edinburgh B 5-0 taking 1st and
2nd respectively whereas Open team competition, Edinburgh was victorious against Kent in a
tight match and proceeded to win the finals against Oxford 4-1. Thanks to this year’s captain
Ryoto Takeuchi Tan, Edinburgh performed spectacularly at this year’s Kendo Taikai!
