PRINCIPALS NEWSLETTER WEDNESDAY 18 AUGUST 2010
We welcome Jaedon Turner-Tomasi and Amelia Tuala-Betham to Mrs Gulliver’s new entrant class. We
hope they enjoy the next eight years at our school. We look forward to seeing them both achieve well.
SCHOOL GOAL
We are in the closing stages of our current school goal – We will show care and consideration for
property and our environment’. The children have done a lot of learning with this goal
and this has been of great benefit to the school. At last week’s assembly the names of
three STARS students were drawn for a special prize. Yesterday, Jordan KipaLotoaso, Richard Moeke, and Rohan Wesley accompanied me to Subway for lunch.
We’ll organise another special prize next term. The following students were
recognised for their work towards the school goal at our last two assemblies.
Seren Wilson-Rangihuna, Nikolao Osman, Tia Whakaneke-Kaa, Faith Joseph,
Jayden Ford, Jessie Soudachanh, Jeremiah Kelemete, Nathan Conley, Latisha
Baker, Penny Rangitutia, Tyrrell Samia, Avery Reid, Alex Lopa, Jaedon Turner-Tomasi, Patrick
Pickering, Malama Aiono, Richard Moeke, Silivelio Taliulu, Rohan Wesley, Logan Tangaroa, Eric Lees,
Jordan Kipa-Lotoaso, Ford Williams, Lepea Tagaloa, Arndrea Toa-Temarama Wikitoa, and Tama PuiaLobb.
Congratulations and well done to you all !!!!!
Our new school goal will be “We will be Leaders”. This goal links to our strategic goal of promoting
leadership. We look forward to seeing some great work in this area.
RAAY’S ATTENDANCE
We continue to monitor attendance and will follow up any issues of concern. We do this because we
know that high attendance levels lead to improved achievement. We have reviewed our Term 2’s figures
in comparison to other local schools. Our school has achieved one of the best attendance rates in the
area. However, it is not the best and that’s where we want to be. We know we can achieve this with
everyone’s co-operation.
EXCELLENCE STATEMENT
This has undergone further revision as more consultation with our community has taken place. We are
now proposing that this statement replace the current school mission.
Our Board of Trustees will be considering this at the meeting next week. The proposed excellence
Statement/Mission is printed below.
Our school mission is the pursuit of excellence:
- A clear focus on learning and commitment to students
- Reflecting on what we do and striving to improve
- Close community and family links
- Celebrating achievement and success of our diverse school community
- Respectful dialogue and collaboration amongst all involved in our school.
If you have any feedback please let me know by the end of this week. We thank everyone who has had
input into this statement over time.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
We have a school council made up of Year 5 – 8 students. This is to give students a voice in
our school. We meet on Mondays at 2.30pm with Mrs Gulliver. We talk about ways we could
help our school to be a better place for kids to be. We will keep you informed of our
decisions. This is another opportunity for our students to develop leadership skills.
WRITING
Here is some great Year 7/8 writing. The poems came out of the recent syndicate Kia Kaha focus.
I AM A BULLY
I’m getting worked up
I walk straight up to him
My hand hits his face
Crack, he’s gone out cold
I feel like going back
But my mind is spinning
Thousands of thoughts are swirling in my
mind
How am I going to explain this to my parents?
Now people doubt us
For what I have done
He deserved what he got
I don’t care about these people
I AM A VICTIM
I am a victim
My body screams pain
Yet my voice lost it’s sound
I can only wait for it to be over
Because I know he’ll never stop
Why is he doing this?
Does he feel no remorse?
I walk away slowly
Only thinking about tomorrow
I feel broken
As if I have no soul
Life’s lost it’s way
I wish it would all go away
I don’t want to live another day
By Jasmine Kaa
Maybe one day I’ll let this go
It has probably scarred him for life.
By Tristan Anderson

Talofa!
It has been awesome to see so many people coming to the boxing classes and cuppa/playgroup. Ex
pupils training or sitting alongside long-standing parents and parents new to our school. These
groups have been a great way to see our community return to the school or network with other
parents.
I’d like to mention all the school sports coaches we have. The hours of commitment by the parents
and staff; in coaching and then overseeing the games, should of course be recognised. We appreciate
that without these parents especially, our students would not have all these sporting opportunities.
We thank you for not only coaching our kids the skills of their sport, but for just as importantly
instilling the spirit and value of respect that are the Rangikura way. These are as obvious in our teams
as the black and yellow of their uniforms.
