Kipper Tuna Turrum Project
Esso Australia Resources Pty. Ltd.
Located off the coast of Victoria in Bass Strait, Kipper Tuna Turrum is one of the largest domestic gas developments on Australia’s eastern
seaboard and holds enough energy to power a city of a million people for 35 years. McDermott was the primary contractor for the
combined award of the Kipper Tuna Gas Project and Turrum Phase 2 Development Project.
Kipper field holds approximately 620 billion cubic feet of recoverable gas and 30 million barrels of condensate/LPG. McDermott installed
subsea facilities tied back to the existing West Tuna platform, including two subsea wells, four coolers and a manifold. The produced gas
and condensate was transported via a new looped pipeline laid on the seabed to a Riser Access Tower connected by bridge to West Tuna.
Turrum field holds approximately 1 trillion cubic feet of gas and 110 million barrels of oil and gas liquids. McDermott connected the
first platform installed in Bass Strait in over a decade, Marlin B, to the existing Marlin A platform by bridge. The platform will process
additional oil production and gas, which will be piped back to existing facilities at Longford.
• Engineering: McDermott performed detailed design and engineering out of Singapore for the Marlin B platform, the West Tuna Riser
Access Tower, interconnecting bridges, subsea systems and platform-to-platform pipelines.
• Procurement: Equipment and materials associated with construction were procured by McDermott.
• Construction: The complete Marlin B platform with interconnecting bridge to the existing Marlin A platform; Riser Access Tower and
interconnecting bridge to the existing West Tuna platform, some 22,140 ST of facilities in total, were all fabricated at Batam Island
fabrication facility.
• Installation: McDermott successfully installed more than 42 miles of pipe with zero weld repairs between West Tuna and the new
Marlin B Platform and from Marlin B to the Snapper Platform. McDermott also installed the Kipper subsea facilities, with umbilicals
tied back to West Tuna Platform and connected all subsea pipelines to their host facilities. The installation of Marlin B platform and the
Riser Access Tower at West Tuna included hook-up and commissioning.
