Key ideas for participative teaching methods (InWEnt – GIZ)
• Talk less  10:60:30
 10% theoretical inputs; 60% working groups; 30% discussions & conclusion
• Visualize as much as possible
 People remember better what they see and hear
• Plan your training units well in advance
 Inputs (materials, facilities)  to achieve expected output
• Ask the right questions
 Formulate questions to stimulate curiosity & exploration (how question)
• Take adults seriously
 mobilize participants energy & existing knowledge for active interaction
• Build bridges for transfer
 link issues raised in the event for group discussions
• Apply mix methods
Characteristics of participatory teaching methods
• self regulation (not demand for dicipline)
• participation & cooperation (not one-side
approach)
• problem orientation (not standardized solution)
• dinamic visualization (not static)
• facilitation (not top-down teaching)
Methods & techniques for participatory
teaching methods (InWEnt – GIZ)

• Effective small groups
• Brainstorming &
brainwriting

TIPS (ToT PEKERTI & AA – UI)
• Start small, especially the first couple times you handle a course.
• Build your toolkit of exercises by interacting with others/peers and
consulting resources.
• Be willing to adapt. Teaching is a moving target and we have to continually
adapt to
• Use a variety of active learning strategies to recognize diverse student
talents and learning styles
• Share with colleagues. Peer support and interaction is crucial as educators.
• We must reduce barriers and focus on similarities rather than differences.
• Reflect and Refine. When students become more actively involved, things
won’t always go as planned. Be more patient with yourself and your
students in these situations and continually refine strategies based on
observations, collegial discussions, and new ideas.
• Active involvement matters. Despite the challenges, it is important to
remember that active involvement is vital to the learning process at all
levels of education.
• Make it fun!
