It does this through qualitative research. The lab features two research areas that simulate a modern retail environment and a home kitchen as well as separate interview and observation rooms. Consumers can be observed interacting with and discussing packaging in this environment by Tetra Pak’s skilled research specialists, package designers and technicians. The company uses this insight to develop new products and refine existing concepts. Over the past four years, the Tetra Pak Innovation Lab has developed over 4,000 new concepts and several have been brought to commercial development. The HeliCapTM closure for example came from the realization that consumers wanted easier to open, one-step opening and resealable caps and that a cap of this design could help customers to stand out from their rivals. Similar, the Tetra Gemina® Aseptic package was designed from the realization that consumers wanted elegant packages that were a dream to pour from – the geometry of the slanted top was calculated to achieve the best possible product flow.
