Janice Herbert-Carter, M.D., MGA, FACP Chairperson, Department of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dr. Herbert-Carter was named chairperson of the department of medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), effective July 1, 2014. She also is the associate professor of medical education and associate professor of family medicine. Dr. Herbert-Carter is a graduate of Princeton University in biochemistry, science in human affairs, and Afro-American Studies. She earned a medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Having been a National Health Services Corps scholarship recipient, she fulfilled her obligation by serving the underserved, practicing primary care general internal medicine at a community health center in Baltimore, Md. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and earned a master’s degree in health care administration from the University of Maryland. She completed a Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship at Michigan State University, the Harvard-Macy Leaders in Medical Education Program, and the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) for women program at Drexel University. Dr. Herbert-Carter teaches the pathophysiology course to 2nd year medical students, she facilitates small group clinical correlations sessions for 1st year students, teaches in Fundamentals of Medicine 1, 2, and 3 as well as the Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) program. She is a clinical preceptor and didactic teacher for family medicine residents and students in the Comprehensive Family Healthcare Center. Dr. Herbert-Carter teaches in the National Center for Primary Care Faculty Development Program, helping other faculty improve their teaching, curriculum development, and academic medicine leadership skills. She has served on multiple committees at MSM, a few of which include curriculum and evaluation, admissions, library, institutional effectiveness, class expansion, faculty by-laws, and curriculum operations committees, as well as the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) SelfStudy Steering Committee. Dr. Herbert-Carter has published articles and abstracts in various journals, including Academic Medicine, Family Medicine, Journal of General Internal Medicine, Ethnicity and Disease, Journal of the Association of Academic Minority Physicians, and others. She has several book chapters in Primary Care Review for Physician Assistants. In addition, she has presented abstracts, workshops, and posters at many national meetings, including the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Society of General Internal Medicine, American Association of Blacks in Higher Education, and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Herbert-Carter has worked with the National Board of Medical Examiners in various capacities, including as an item-writer for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps1 and 2. In addition, she has written internal medicine questions for the Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP) published by the American College of Physicians. Dr. Herbert-Carter is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the TeamBased Learning Collaborative, the Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society, and the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. She is married to Dr. Jerome Carter, a medical informaticist, and is the mother of Joy Carter, a graduate student in speech-language pathology at Georgia State University. Her nonprofessional passions include cooking, tap dancing, walking, and reading.
