JANUARY’S MINUTES CORRECTIONS/OBSERVATIONS: Sonny Echendu noted that the motion by Mr. Jude Anyanwu to support and assist the Alagba’s family was correct. It would be discussed during matters arising. Barrister Abiahu noted that Sonny Echendu, even though, read the minutes by correctly describing his position in Mbaise USA, but it still must be corrected to appropriately reflect his position; he is the secretary of the BoD, not the secretary of Mbaise USA. It was Mr. Sonny Akpuda who suggested that the executive should provide Iri-Ji budget not Engr. Onuoha. Page 4 – Mr. Austin Imo said he reconciled the account with Bruno Nwachukwu, and did not request for evidence of payment. Page 2: A deposit of $1,000.00 was made to and an agreement was signed with Priority Plus. The balance is due on March 01, 2014. The president (Engr. Adima) said he solicited for ideas for debt recovery/collection and he only advised the executive to show good example by satisfying their financial obligations to MFU Adoption of minutes: After the corrections, a motion was moved by Mr. by Sonny Akpuda to adopt the minutes. . Fred supported the motion. The minutes were adopted. MFU - 1 of 5 MBAISE FAMILY UNION OF NORTH CAROLINA P.O. BOX 308 ROLESVILLE, NC 27571-99989 Kola nuts were presented and it was blessed by Sir Imo. Matters Arising from the Minutes Letter from Mrs. Odibo demanding for entitlements for her adopted children. The letter was read and the executive asked for a decision from members. The members unanimously referred Mrs. Odibo to Article XI §2 (b) of our constitution to wit: “The Union shall present the sum of two hundred dollars ($200.00) to a Full Member who officially informs the Union of a live birth …” Members concluded that “live birth” is a variance from adoption and Constitutional review would address issues like this. Mrs. Odibo, therefore does not qualify for benefits based on the current constitutional provision, MFU members concluded. Bruno Nwachukwu’s claim that payments he made to MFU was not properly documented and credited to him. Financial Secretary (Mr. Austin Imo) said he has touched based with Mr. Bruno Nwachukwu. He said he was given five postdated checks to be paid on specific dates. One check was not credited and one bounced. The treasurer paid-in one that was not recorded. The bounced check was replaced by Bruno. The president said the Fin. Sec and Bruno would meet to iron out any misunderstanding. Hosting of MFU’s Meetings February’s meeting (02/23/2014) would have been hosted by Mr. Akwitti, but due to his bereavements, he could not host the meeting. He promised to host after the burial and funeral rites of his father in-law and his brother. Members were encouraged to ensure that they make arrangements for another member to host the meeting if for any reason they would be unable to do so. There are no fines or consequences, constitutionally, if a member fails to host our monthly meeting as scheduled. February’s meeting was hosted by MFU with money from MFU’s bank account. Mr. Onyenekwe suggested that MFU should encourage Mr. Akwitti to host the meeting as the end of the year party if he decides to fulfill his membership obligation of hosting a monthly meeting. Others suggested that he should pay a specified sum of money, being the cost of hosting a meeting. Abiahu – the executive should meet with him to demand for $500.00 or to host a meeting for MFU and he should let MFU know when he would be ready to host one. Tony Alagba’s Bereavement Assistance: The president said that MFU was morally right in assisting Mr. Alagba. He was of the opinion that the resolution would have been read out three times. The president referenced some sections of the constitution requiring constitutional amendments. Engr. Onuoha reminded him that we are supposed to make a yearly payment of $200.00, but we are not doing so. Mr. Abiahu said if we form a quorum, members can make decisions that will be binding. Mr. Anyanwu wanted to know if there are other inherent or below the surface issues surrounding the Alagba issue. Mr. Sonny Akpuda asked what if same situation re-occurs? He opined that it is good to adhere to the constitution as issues arise. Mrs. Ugoeke – wants MFU not to refer to Alagba’s case because the decision was made based on the commitment and dedication of the Alagba’s to MFU. Engr. MFU - 2 of 5 MBAISE FAMILY UNION OF NORTH CAROLINA P.O. BOX 308 ROLESVILLE, NC 27571-99989 Adima said he thought a mistake was made. But now that it is clear that members think that no mistake was made, the issue should be closed. AGENDA ITEMS Item #1: Mbaise USA 2013 Convention Engr. Onuoha – Convention account has been closed. $9885.69 is due to NC, he said. He has sent accompanying documents to the National Fin. Sec. Other documents would be sent on Monday (02/24/2014). NJ Convention 2014 2014 Mbaise USA Convention in NJ will take place from July 3 - 6 at Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel, Elizabeth NJ, 07201. Room rate per nite is $109.00. Members were encouraged to make their reservations. More information is on Mbaise USA website. It is an election year as well. Mbaise USA 2014 Medical Mission The secretary of MFU as well as the secretary of the BoD informed members that no one knows where and who is funding Mbaise USA’s 2014 medical mission, except Mr. Nwanne – the president. We would want to know who is funding the medical mission. Mr. Nwanne is insisting on going to the medical mission in May even though the BoD approved and decided that it should hold in December. Item #2: Iri-Ji Committee Mr. Paulie Nwachukwu – The chairman of the Iri-Ji scheduled a meeting – he said only one person attended. The chairman, Engr. Onuoha and the president made progress on some issues that were decided on. Hall: The Armory is fully booked. Events center has been secured for the 23rd of August at $2,000.00 Cleaning would be $300.00 minimum. Invitation: Sonny Echendu is preparing it. A sample was brought for review and corrections. Raffle tickets would be under $2000.00 Mr. Nwachukwu implored members of the committee to please attend future meetings. Mr. Joe Onyenekwe: The hall may be too small for such an Mbaise event. The hall generates a lot of heat. If payment has not been made, the committee should reconsider the venue. Mrs. Ukpabi – What about the 2013 convention venue? Mrs. Ekenna – The current venue will not serve us well. Engr. Onuoha – Imo State has held several events in that hall, and it was suitable and adequate for guests. Costs should be factored-in as we plan for the event. The meeting should decide today if the currently secured hall should be used or not. It was decided that Carolina Events and cultural Center on Gresham Lake Road should be used. Item #3: Constitution Review Mr. Abiahu: This would be a second announcement. Members should raise any objections they may have or it may be late. He sent out emails to MFU members for suggestions. Members should please review our constitution and make suggestions to assist the committee members. He MFU - 3 of 5 MBAISE FAMILY UNION OF NORTH CAROLINA P.O. BOX 308 ROLESVILLE, NC 27571-99989 requested for an electronic copy of the constitution. Non-members should submit suggestions on or before 03/07/2014. Mr. Anyanwu wanted to know when the decision to create a deadline was made. Mr. Abiahu said he exercised the chairman’s prerogative. Item #3: Audit Committee: No update. MATTERS ARISING: The president thanked the wake keeping organizing committee and MFU for Chief Chinenye wake keeping. He informed members that Mr. & Mrs. Akwitti have travelled to Nigeria and that Mr. Akwitti warmly extended his gratitude to MFU. The president thanked Mrs. Onyenekwe for cooking all the foods served at the meeting. Sonny Echendu: Explained that the woman his family used to live with left his house without notice and he did not know where she was. He presented a bottle of Chandon champagne to send her off – saying that if she had given him notice of her departure, he would have organized a small send-off party. But as he was not timely informed and the person she is now living with did not enter the Echendu’s residence to pick her up, he would none-the-less send her off with the bottle of champagne he presented to MFU. He washed his hands off. Paulie Nwachukwu – Said the birds in the mouth of a hawk are not crying for deliverance but for the world to hear their cries. Finance A total payment of $685.00 was made by members. Next meeting The family of Dr. Jimmy Imo. Motion for adjournment Mr. Sonny Akpuda moved a motion for adjournment.
