SPECIAL FEATURES: MFA IN WRITING PROGRAM WRITERS!IN!RESIDENCE LONE MOUNTAIN READINGS & EMERGING WRITERS FESTIVAL The MFA program presents a series of free evening literary readings and discussions that are open to the public. Recent visitors include Jo Ann Beard, Michelle Tea, Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge, Tina Chang, Robert Students in the MFA program have the opportunity to take workshops with visiting writers. Recent writers-in-residence include novelist Daniel Alarcón and poet Thomas Sayers Ellis. LIFE AFTER MFA SYMPOSIA In both fall and spring the Life a!er MFA symposia provide information about professional development for MFA students and alumni. Part One discusses fellowships, academic and non-academic jobs, publishing in journals, and literary agents. STUDENT READINGS On two consecutive evenings, students, faculty, family, and friends are invited to hear graduates read from their completed theses. Students are also involved in organizing and participating in local reading series, including Babylon Salon, co-run by MFA alumni. SPECIAL FEATURES: MFA IN WRITING PROGRAM SWITCHBACK MFA students can gain editorial experience by volunteering to run and manage the online journal Switchback. Now in its tenth volume, Switchback publishes fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, as well as art, book reviews, interviews, and discussions on cra!. Visit www.swback.com. TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS Students in the MFA program can gain teaching experience by becoming a teaching assistant within the English Department. Recent courses taught by TAs include: Advanced Workshops in Fiction and Poetry, Creative Writing for Non-Majors, Introduction to Fiction and Poetry, Senior Seminars in Writing and Literature, Special Topics in Writing and Literature, as well as The Ignation Literary Magazine and Wordnight, a student-run reading series. FELLOWSHIPS All applicants are automatically considered for a Graduate Fellowship based on merit. Each year, we provide a small number of fellowships awarded to the top candidates in each genre. Recent graduates of the MFA program can pursue a Post-graduate Fellowship by applying to teach the Introduction to Creative Writing for Non-majors course offered by the English Department. The Lawrence Ferlinghetti Poetry Fellowship honors Lawrence Ferlinghetti who published and supported the work of writers who were outsiders―outside traditional academia or traditional social conventions. This fellowship, which provides full tuition funding, is awarded bi-annually to an applicant in poetry whose work embodies a concern for social justice and freedom of expression.
