Dr. Jens Martin Gurr Professor of British Literature and Culture, Speaker of the University‘s Joint Center “Urban Systems”, University of Duisburg-Essen “A Literary Studies Approach to Urban Complexity: How Literary Studies can Contribute to Inter- and Transdisciplinary Urban Research” Jens Martin Gurr has been Professor of British and Anglophone Literature and Culture at the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2007. His research interests include urban literary and cultural studies, contemporary American literature and culture, 17th- and 18th-century British literature and British Romanticism. Since 2008, he has been director of the Joint Centre “Urban Systems” at the University of Duisburg-Essen, in which some 70 researchers from all faculties engage in inter- and transdisciplinary research on key urban issues; since 2010, he has been director of the international interdisciplinary doctoral programme “ARUS – Advanced Research in Urban Systems”. Recent publications include the co-edited volumes Cityscapes in the Americas and Beyond: Urban Complexity in Literature and Film as well as EthniCities: Metropolitan Cultures and Ethnic Identities in the Americas (both jointly published by WVT, Trier, and Bilingual Press, Tempe, AZ, 2011) and Romantic Cityscapes (Volume 12 of Studies in English Romanticism; Trier: WVT, 2013).
