“What’s really in our Food?”
Dear Parents & Caregivers,
Last week we welcomed new Parents and Caregivers to our school at our ‘Taste of Magic’
evening. It was a lovely night, and thoroughly enjoyed by all. We were so proud to hear our
School Leaders speak so passionately about their school and experiences. The Student Leader

Students are really enjoying the current Integrated Study ‘Kitchen Chemistry’. Experimenting
with food and the chemical changes that happen when other elements are added, has been
hugely exciting and fun for students. There are so many interesting hands-on experiments
happening, see the photos inside.
The Magic focus for our students this week is Caring, the C in Magic. Please spend some time
with your children talking about caring – how can we care for our belongings, our health, our
environment, our community, our pets, our friends, our family, our school etc.
Our school Cross Country for all students is on this Wednesday, starting on the netball courts
at 1pm. We hope you will all come along to cheer the children on. Please encourage your

child to wear their House shirt on the day. Please ensure you allow enough time to park and
walk if need be, and please do not park within the Tumbleweed grounds or block the
Inter-School Cross Country entrance to Wharehine.

Members of the Board of Trustees visited our pilot one-to-one device class last Wednesday
and Thursday. They were most impressed with what they experienced. Very soon we will be
providing an opportunity for other parents to visit the class. We are currently working out a
timetable to best minimise any disruption to the students while they are learning.
Congratulations to all GREEN HOUSE students. Good on you for showing us how you
are Mature, Articulate, Goal Driven, Inquiring and Caring - you all totally deserve being

School Photos – Our school photos are in the final stages of proofing and we are absolutely delighted with them. The
photos will be available to view and purchase online shortly. A note will be sent out as soon as they are available.
Uniform - Size 6 long sleeved polos are now back in stock. These can be a great addition to your
child’s uniform. They can wear a long sleeved thermal top underneath and stay nice and warm
without the risk of losing fleeces!
Please make sure your child’s fleece is well named (including somewhere other than the tag). They
take them on and off all day and leave them in all sorts of places.
If you have second hand uniform that you would like to donate to the school, please hand it in to the office. We particularly
want second hand size 4, 6 and 8 uniforms.
If your child has come home with a uniform item on loan from the school office, please return these a.s.a.p. Our stocks are
very low which means Parents/Caregivers will need to pop in and provide a change of clothes if their child gets dirty at
school.
New Club: Knitting and Art Bombing Club.... wants knitters to help pick up stitches and get students back on the right
track, some mornings a week, before school starts. Half an hour or less would be grand. Also if anyone is keen to come on
Wednesdays at lunchtime to help me!? Grandparents welcome. Phone Vicki on 09 422 7180.
Castle Fundraiser – Thank you to Suzanne Spencely we have yummy Orange Marmalade for sale, made with oranges from
our school garden $6 or $5 for small. Funds raised will go to The Castle. (More jars needed to make more, please deliver to
office).
Thank you Ronald McDonald House has received several large bags of toys cleaned and packed by the Ronald McDonald
Club in school. They are thrilled to have them and have stocked their playroom, as well as giving toys to individual children.
Congratulations and well done to all those who helped make this a success. Many thanks, Claire Buchan
School Banking – every Tuesday in the Information Centre until 8.45am. Pop in and chat to our Student Bankers and ANZ
representative.
We are a Gold TravelWise school! On the 26 June Mrs Macleod, Mrs Scott and
some lucky TravelWise Ambassadors attended the annual TravelWise celebration.
This was a fun night with lots of activities and a concert from Titanium. As part of
the evening Matakana School received a GOLD award for TravelWise. This is the
third year in a row we have received this award and big thanks go to everyone who
has been trying to be TravelWise. We also received an even more special award –
Matakana School was chosen as one of only three schools in the whole of Auckland
for our contribution to Road Safety and keeping children safe. We were the
Northern winners in this category. This reflects the effort the school has made in
starting the Kiss and Drop zone and the Walking School Bus and all the other
activities we have undertaken to keep cars away from the school grounds and make
sure parents and children are choosing safe behavior. Thanks to all the parents/caregivers for your continued support.
Acknowledgements
- Thank you to Noel Leeming for their support of our school. The Family & Friends
Day held last Term raised $345 for our school.
- Thank you to all the students that participated in the World Vision 20/40 Hour
Famine. You raised $2,390 for Malawai!!!
- Thank you for supporting the Rodney Rams fundraiser; together we raised $415
for this club towards the rebuilding of their clubhouse, which was
destroyed by fire.
PTA Matters - Hi everybody. What a great start to the term! Really good to
meet those of you who are new to the school at the Taste of Magic evening last
Tuesday night and we’re hoping to see many of you at the morning tea at MMK
at 9a.m. on Wednesday so we can introduce you to some of the ins and outs of
our school and answer any questions you may have. We had a great bake sale
last Wednesday, which raised $460. Thank you so much to all you wonderful
people who provided fabulous baking and of course to everyone who purchased
the goodies too. The school Cross Country is being held on Wednesday
afternoon and we will be there at the finish line handing out free iceblocks to all the children who participate, purchased with money we have
raised with your help. These are those little extra treats that help make our
school so magic for our little darlings.
$510 raised for Equity School - Thank you for your wonderful support of the Mufti Day held
for Equity School in Kenya on the last day of Term 2. Part of this magnificent amount was the
direct donation for Mufti, and the rest raised through the enthusiasm and hard work of our
Student Equity Friendship team who ran stalls during lunchtime. The money went directly to
Kenya and has been received with great joy. We will let you know how it has been used as
soon as the information comes from the school. One of the things that will be upgraded,
thanks to your contributions, is the school kitchen, which as you can see is in serious need of
upgrade and will provide porridge for the children’s’ breakfasts for some time.
Thank you! We had a fantastic turn out to our first Book Covering Club. 18 Parents /
Caregivers covered approximately. 100 new books and re-labeled all our picture books. Thanks
so much – your help was really appreciated. New picture book shelving was installed during
the holidays, which has made it much easier for our littlies to find a picture book that interests
them. This was paid for by the PTA, so thank you to them, and to all our school families who
support the PTA fundraising events.

A great day was enjoyed by all Rugby and Rippa
players, at the second tournament day. Fantastic
sportsmanship and fair play was shown. Rippa won
2/3 games with the last game only a one-point
difference. Rugby played three games, winning one
against Warkworth. Player of the day was awarded to
