Quick Camp Facts The Fundamentals Day Camp is a full day of basketball activity. The camp will be divided by grade so every camper can compete up to her greatest potential. Individual instruction will be provided for each camper at her position. Our primary goal is to help each camper improve her skills. There will be a tremendous amount of emphasis on the fundamental skill development of each camper. The offensive, defensive, and shooting instruction she will be taught can be put into practice during the two games per day. The entire Pioneer coaching staff, along with current and former Pioneer players, will work with the camper on her development. Cost: 2030 E. Total cost- $230 Deposit-$100 **deposit due with application** $230 covers the entire cost of instruction, camp memorabilia and insurance. Location: The Jon Lewis Hoops Factory is held on the campus of MidAmerica Nazarene University, located only 20 minutes from Kansas City in Olathe, Kansas just off I-35 and Santa Fe. Facilities: This summer the Jon Lewis Hoops Factory will be utilizing state-of-the-art training facilities at the Cook Center Bell Family Arena, as well as other facilities on campus. The Cook Center is a multi-million dollar athletic facility on the MNU campus. Camp participants will also have access to MNU athletic training staff and first aid as needed. Meals: Camp Sessions: Daily lunches can be purchased at the Cook Center snack shop, which provides a variety of choices, or participants may choose to bring their own meal. Session #1: June 23rd-26th Session #2: July 21st-24th Session #3: Aug 4th-7th Time: 8:00am - 3:00pm daily What to Bring: Athletic Trainers: th Annual Certified Athletic Trainers will be on staff to prevent and treat athletic injuries. A parental consent form and doctor’s statement of health form is attached to this brochure. The Campers: For grades 3rd - 12th. Participants of all ages and ability level will be present. Camp instructors will use differentiation strategies to meet the needs of campers at all levels. 4 2014 Gym only basketball shoes, playing attire, and personal equipment (ankle braces, mouth piece, water bottle, etc.) Parent/Coach Observations: Parents and coaches accompanying a camp participant may observe from the second level of the Bell Family Arena each day. Before entering the coaching ranks, Palu played collegiately at Ottawa University and graduated with a bachelor in physical education in 2011. He is sister of current Pioneer point guard, Navia Palu. As graduate assistant, Palu works with the rest of the staff to maintain successful recruiting efforts. Palu also assists with the preparation of upcoming opponents through video analysis and scouting efforts. As the newest member on staff, Palu works with Lewis’ staff to structure individual post player workouts. Olivè Palu - Assistant Coach Parent or Guardian’s Name: Berger, a native of Kansas City, Missouri attended Pembroke Hill High School where she helped lead her squad to the 1999 state championship and four district titles. A recipient of the Edward Ryan Sports Award, she was a two-year captain and holds the program’s career assist record. Leslie currently resides in Westwood Hills, KS. After college Berger played professionally overseas for Hapoel Tel Aviv and Elizur Ramla, where she claimed the Division II League Championship in 2006 with Ramia. A two-time honorable mention All-University Athletic Association selection during her career, Berger ranks ninth in school history with 258 career assists. She compiled an overall four year record of 105 wins and 13 losses, appearing in four National Tournaments. Berger was named to the UAA All-Conference honorable mention teams in 2003 and 2005 and served as team captain her senior season. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2005. Home Phone: Jon is married to Brandi, a former MNU Pioneer basketball player. She currently works as a labor and delivery nurse and massage therapist. Jon and Brandi have one child and live in Olathe, KS. A former point guard for Washington University from 2002-05, Berger helped the Bears to four United Athletic Association (UAA) titles and the NCAA Division III Elite Eight in 2003. She holds the UAA record for most assists in a game without a turnover (13) and led the conference in assist/turnover ratio as a senior. Address: Jon graduated from MNU in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education. During his coaching tenure at MNU, he has also completed a Master’s Degree in Special Education. Throughout Jon’s early coaching years he worked as a high school teacher. He taught special education, and also developed and implemented Gardner-Edgerton School District’s first ever at-risk program called New Directions. Prior to coming to MidAmerica, Berger coached for Hall of Fame coach Nancy Fahey at her alma mater, Washington University in St. Louis. The Bears made it to the NCAA DIII National Tournament Championship game that season. Before coaching at Washu, Berger served as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Missouri while earning her Master’s in Health Education and Promotion. Camper’s Name: During his playing years with the MNU men’s basketball team, Jon was a part of multiple conference championships and four national tournament teams. The knowledge gained from working with MNU men’s basketball coach, Rocky Lamar, has been invaluable to Jon’s coaching experience. As part of the MNU coaching staff, the Pioneers have had some of their best seasons in women’s basketball history. Jon has coached in three national tournaments, finishing as high as the Final Four in the 06-07 season. The Pioneers have also won a conference championship and two conference tournament championships along with accumulating a 109-58 record over the last five seasons while Jon has been on staff. He has helped recruit and coach one Conference Freshmen of the Year, four Conference Players of the Year, twelve All-Conference selections, six NAIA All-American performers and thirteen Academic All-Americans. Berger’s responsibilities as an assistant under Lewis include assisting in the organization of practice plans for the team, on-court coaching and scouting of upcoming opponents throughout the season. In addition, Berger is responsible for managing the program’s equipment needs, organizing team travel and coordinating the Jon Lewis Hoops Factory basketball summer camps. In addition to working with the Pioneers, Lewis has been instrumental in developing many NCAA DI, DII, and NAIA student athletics while cofounding the KC Hoops Factory program and most recently helping build one of the Kansas City’s top girls’ club basketball programs, Eclipse, an elite non-for-profit AAU program with over 25 teams. While traveling across the country coaching summer teams, Lewis has been able to evaluate and recruit some of the nation’s best prospects. Leslie Berger finished her third year as an assistant coach at MNU. In the last three seasons with the Pioneers, Berger was a part of staff that led MNU to two conference championships and three consecutive conference tournament titles. 2014 Coach Jon Lewis Hoops Factory Head coach Jon Lewis finished his third season leading the MNU women’s basketball program as successfully as ever. The team finished the highest in the school’s history at the division one level in the Sweet 16 at the national tournament. In the last three years, at the helm of the MidAmerica program, Lewis has won five out of six conference championships, along with three consecutive conference tournament championships and three national tournament appearances. Last season, the team finished with a record of 28-4 and a conference tournament championship. The team, this past year, included Senior forward Kelsey Balcom earning first team All HAAC honors and Third Team All American honors. Three other Pioneers earned All HAAC honors, with junior Daria Sprew making 2nd team All HAAC, sophomore Megan Balcom earning 3rd team All HAAC and senior Rachel Boan earned All Conference honorable mention.
