Friends meetinghouse marks bicentennial
By MIKE MONOSTRA

The Medford Friends’ meetinghouse has sat on a plot of land between present-day Union Street and Allen Avenue since 1814. When the building first opened, the front of the building faced the roadway, then-named Friends Avenue. Today, the rear of the building faces Union Street,
with the front of the building accessible through a driveway.
The area around the Medford
Friends meetinghouse looks a lot
different today than when it first
opened in 1814.
Two hundred years ago, there
was no Medford Township. The
modern-day Union Street did not
exist. The area, known then as
Upper Evesham, was just a small
village. The Medford Friends’
meetinghouse was one of the centers for the community.
Prior to 1814, Medford Friends
had grown into a large community. Current member Janet Jackson-Gould said the current meetinghouse was constructed to facilitate a rapidly growing congregation.
“They had a smaller meeting
house in the back of the lot,
which was all wood,” she said.
“They just outgrew it.”
The new meetinghouse was
constructed just off present-day
Union Street. Made of brick instead of wood, the meetinghouse
has stood the test of time as Medford Township was founded and
the area around it developed.
This year marks the bicentennial of the meetinghouse, yet
very little has changed with the
building. Outside of a 1984 renovation that added a community
room, kitchen and bathrooms, the
original building has not been alplease see FRIENDS, page 2

The meetinghouse has seen a
variety of people come through
its doors in the last 200 years.
Today, Medford Friends has about
100 members. Some have had family members coming for generations, while others are new to the
community.
“It’s really interesting, because
we have a number of new members and families,” JacksonGould said. “A lot of people have
moved here.”
Medford Friends is older than
the United States, having been
founded in 1759. It was founded
with a focus on serving others.
Today, Medford Friends continues to serve the community
through a variety of programs.
The group has helped to build a
peace center in Central Africa
and a school in Afghanistan.
Back home, Medford Friends
works with the homeless and donates to multiple food banks in
the area. But one of its more
unique programs is its work with
mothers who are in prison and
unable to see their children.
“We have a reading program
for mothers who are in jail,” Jackson-Gould said. “We give them a
tape recorder and a book to read.
Then we give the tape to their
kids.”

Medford Friends has numerous projects with local prisoners.
Many of the early Friends members were persecuted and put into
jails. While such persecution does
not take place today, the organization still maintains its connection
to its early roots.
Friends did take time out on
Sunday, June 8 to celebrate its
meetinghouse’s 200th anniversary. Members gathered outside
for a picnic lunch with music,
games and other entertainment.
Members of other meetinghouses
in town also came to the event.
Jackson-Gould described the
celebration as one of unity. The
Medford Friends’ meetinghouse
has hosted local Quakers for 200
years and Jackson-Gould believes
the community is strong enough
to continue gathering in the
building for centuries to come.

e realize that you may have
other, more pressing concerns on your mind. After
all, summer has officially started, the
kids are out of school, it’s hot, it’s
rainy, then it’s hot again.
You’d rather be by a pool or at the
beach, avoiding the South Jersey bear
or the Jersey Shore shark, planning
your Fourth of July celebrations, your
family vacation, or pondering the silliness of the government making salt
water taffy the state’s official candy.
And yes, we realize that late June is
not typically the time for reflection.
That is usually reserved for the waning days of December and the beginning of a new year.
But for us at Elauwit Media, we’ve
spent the last few months looking
back, and we’ll be spending a chunk of
our summer doing the same.
That’s because, come August, we’ll

be turning 10 years old. Our first
newspaper, The Haddonfield Sun, debuted in August 2004. Since then,
we’ve expanded quite a bit.
Along the way, we have some great
memories. We’ve made great contacts,
some great friends and have done our
best to serve the residents of every
town we cover.
Now, it’s time to reflect on those 10
years. This summer, we’ll be celebrating the last decade, and we want your
input.
What has the last 10 years meant to
you? What does your life look like
today compared to what it looked like
in 2004? What does any stretch of 10
years mean in a larger sense?
Over the summer, we’ll be compiling stories, photos and more that help
us paint a picture of what 2004-2014
has meant, both to us specifically and
to the town and its residents.
If you’d like to be a part of this effort, if you’d like to contribute your
thoughts, your insights, your stories
and your photos, please send an email
to [email protected].
We’re involving our readers in our
10-year celebration because you are
the reason we started our first Sun
newspaper, you are the reason we
started more, and you are the reason
we continue to publish every week.
The last 10 years have been great for
us, and we hope they have been equally as great for you.
Help us reflect on these past 10 years
as we prepare for the next 10, and
hopefully even more.
Utility pole signs prompt township action
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
An excess number of signs on utility
poles in Medford is leading the township to
take action.
Township manager Chris Schultz said
the township will use Clean Communities
funds to pay for overtime for public works
staff to go through the township and collect signs on utility poles.
“They’re going zone by zone and taking
every sign down,” he said. “Then they’re
storing them and the zoning officer will be
inventorying them.”
Schultz has asked residents at previous
meetings to not hang signs on utility poles,
citing it is against state law.
The problems have stemmed from two
sets of people. Schultz said some signs are
from legitimate businesses, while others
are from cell phone-operated businesses.
“A lot of these signs are from non-local
people,” Schultz said. “They’re from businesses from all over the state.”
Schultz also said there are organizations
intentionally putting signs high up on the
poles and keeping them out of people’s
reach.
“Some of these signs are very high up,”
he said. “People are taking deliberative action to make sure these signs are so high,
that you can’t just go and rip them down.”
The township will go through the confis-
cated signs and issue warnings to violators. The focus will be on legitimate businesses the township can track down, because the township is unable to go after cell
phone-based businesses.
“The police are not allowed to look up
those phone numbers,” Schultz said “It’s
not a criminal issue.”
Schultz noted utility companies are responsible for enforcement. However, after
talking with Atlantic City Electric, removing signage from poles is something it is
not able to do regularly.
“They’re just as overwhelmed,” Schultz
said. “They don’t have the resources.”

Councilman
Randy
Pace
questioned using Clean Communities funding to clear utility
poles.
“Why would we use our Clean
Communities grant funding to
pay for overtime?” he asked.
Schultz added the township
would bill the utility companies
in the future. He suggested going
through the township twice a
year to clean the poles as long as
the utility companies were reimbursing the township.
Pace said the township should
look into grants to help pay for
pole clean up. Schultz said he
would talk to the utility companies and inquire about programs
in the coming weeks.
Council also discussed having
a meeting with state legislators to
amend the state law on utility
poles. With the utility companies
unable to keep up with enforcing
the statute, Schultz suggested
drafting an amendment to give
municipalities enforcement powers.
