Ecole Riviera School Newsletter
Chers parents,
L’arrivée des vacances d’été marque la fin de cette année scolaire. Cette année difficile fût malgré tout riche en
évènements et moments inoubliables pour tous. Ce dernier trimestre, en plus des apprentissages scolaires, aura
permis aux élèves d’effectuer de nombreuses sorties : camp, courses d’école, sorties sportives, visites de musée
ou expositions, pic-nic, spectacle de fin d’année…
Tous ces moments font partie de la vie scolaire et permettent aussi aux enfants d’apprendre ou de mettre en
pratique des compétences acquises au fil des mois.
En cette fin d’année, je tiens à remercier l’ensemble de personnes qui oeuvrent au quotidien pour faire vivre tous
ces magnifiques moments à vos enfants et qui contribuent au bon fonctionnement de l’école : les éducatrices, les
enseignants et les assistants, l’équipe de l’administration, les mamans qui nous ont aidés lors de certaines activités
ou pour du soutien en lecture, Mme Michèle qui est toujours fidèle au poste 3 après-midi par semaine pour faire
un peu de lecture avec les élèves.
Je vous souhaite d’ores et déjà à tous un excellent été et je me réjouis de vous retrouver à la rentrée scolaire
pour relever les défis et challenges qui nous attendent lors de la prochaine rentrée scolaire.

l'Afrique.
Ce dernier semestre, nous avons travaillé
le thème de l'Afrique.
Les enfants ont découvert que nous parlions d'un continent qui avaient
plusieurs pays. Dans cette partie du monde, on y trouve trois
paysages : Le désert, la savane et la jungle.

Cours de couture (4ème module)
C’est un groupe de 18 enfants (11 filles et 7 garçons) qui a participé au
dernier module de l’année et ils ont réalisé un réalisé un vêtement. Pour
les filles, il s’agissait d’une tenue d’été (pantalon et t-shirt) et pour les
garçons d’un bermuda et t-shirt pour certains.
Tous maitrisent maintenant parfaitement l’utilisation de la machine à
coudre ainsi que le montage, l’épinglage et la finition du vêtement.

Our Alphabet Wall Display: All designed by Year 1
By now, reception class pupils have learnt all the letter sounds and names, following Jolly Phonics. They know a
song for each letter of the alphabet. They love singing their ABC and the Jolly Phonics' songs. This is why, in
Literacy, we have recently been studying the story 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom' by Bill Martin Jr. This is a story
about lower-case letters climbing up a coconut tree in alphabetical order, until the tree bends so much that the
letters fall out of the tree. The upper-case letters then come to help them. At night, the letter “A” gets up and
climbs the coconut tree, daring the other letters to catch him. The pupils loved the story and kept on requesting
me to read it again!
As well, in Art, we have been learning about a famous artist called Wassily Kandinsky. We have looked at some of
his paintings and shared our opinions. The pupils got inspired and created some great art work!

We then decided to reproduce the coconut tree from the 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom' story and decorated
the 3D upper-case letters using the Kandinsky style. Now, the pupils can enjoy even more by singing their
letters songs underneath their coconut tree.
To follow up our Literacy project on “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” story, we were lucky to get about twenty
tiny caterpillars and watched them grow. We could notice how fast they were growing! Two weeks later, they
started making their cocoon, hanging upside down. So, we transferred them to a net, waiting to see the
transformation. Few days later, they all turned into beautiful butterflies. We watched them closely and then
decided it was time to set them free. It was really an interesting and exciting experiment.

ART – Study of an Artist by year 3
Insired by the wonderful and colourful work of the impressionist Claude Monet, 3P little Monets created
beautiful pieces of pastel and guache on canvas to offer their lovely Mums on Mother’s Day.

3P had a Geography, History and English fusion time this term, under our new topic – The Seaside!
We produced our own travel brochures using persuasive language, punctuation and the pictures of our own
holidays that we brought into school.
We designed and wrote postcards from these fantastic seaside places and shared all our experiences using a
huge range of new vocabulary.
We are now ready to go on summer holidays and to use all these new words and expressions! Have a
wonderful time!!!

4H et Le braingym
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Le Brain Gym est un ensemble de mouvements
et d’activités ciblés, simples, agréables et
amusantes à exécuter et qui remplissent
d’énergie. Ces mouvements, spécifiques, aident à
l’apprentissage, à l’organisation et à la
concentration.
La kinésiologie Educative est un système qui permet aux
apprenants, quel que soit leur âge, de "sortir" tout le
potentiel caché qui se trouve enfermé dans leur corps.
Vous avez tous vu la grosse poubelle rouge dans la cour
remplie de plein de matériel pour bouger.
Il existe aussi sa petite sœur qu’Isabelle nous a rapportée.
Elle contient des balles, des gobelets, des balles de
massage…

Un peu de codage et beaucoup de plaisir
L’innovation va vite et, pour aller encore plus vite, les entreprises ont besoin de développeurs sachant manier le
code. Et, pour réveiller les vocations voici le projet code.org Les grandes entreprises de high-tech soutiennent ce projet Mark Zuckerberg, fondateur de Facebook, et Bill
Gates, fondateur de Microsoft, ont décidé de réaliser des tutoriels pour
initier les néophytes.
Voici nos élèves de 4e face aux petits angry birds qu’ils doivent faire
sortir d’un labyrinthe de plus en plus complexe en codant leur trajet.
Certains élèves ont résolu les défis très rapidement. De futurs
informaticiens…

A la découverte du roman « Je te sauverai »
Les élèves de 4e ont lu plusieurs romans tout au long de l’année dont « Je
te sauverai », histoire inspirée par le naufrage du pétrolier Erika en 1999
au large des côtes de Belle-Ile en Bretagne. Alan, un petit garçon, va
sauver un guillemot de Troïl de cette marée noire.
Ils ont évidemment découvert ce récit, puis effectué des recherches sur
internet sur cet oiseau de mer et enfin peint un paysage marin à la
manière de Claude Monet qui a vécu un moment sur cette île.

R A LLY E L E CT U R E
Auriez-vous croisé ces derniers temps des élèves des
classes de 4e et de 5e le nez plongé dans un livre? Rien
de plus normal. Comme chaque année, ils participent à
un rallye lecture après les vacances de Pâques jusqu’au
début du mois de juin. Le but étant de lire le maximum
d’ouvrages puis de répondre à cinq questions se
rapportant à la compréhension de chaque livre. Plus on
lit, plus on accumule de points.
Bravo à Cyrille le grand gagnant des 5e, suivi de près par
Egna et Constance.
Chez les 4e, Ethan a remporté le prix de
quelques points par rapport à Thomas et
de Sébastian.
Bravo à tous pour leur participation et
leur envie de lire.

Year 4 has been very busy!
INDIA
In Year 4 this term we have had lots of fun learning about India, a contrasting location. The children have
compared the differences and similarities between Switzerland and India. They also learnt about the language
spoken, the religious beliefs and the types of animals that live in each country. National Animal - Tiger
National Bird - Peacock
One of the most exciting parts was tasting some of the different foods that are even in India, naan breads,
chapatti, child friendly curry and mangoes. The children also completed some fantastic art work based on Indian Elephants. They used a number of
skills, painting (dabbing), adding oil pastels and collage to their elephants. The end result is very colourful.

Anita Pouroulis
We were delighted to have the South African born author, Anita Pouroulis, visit us in May. She spent the day
at Riviera School sharing her beautifully written and illustrated books with all of the children. Anita read stories, showed the children her books on
the IPad and worked with the children on developing
their own ideas based on the stories she had
written. many of the children also went home with
their own personally signed copy of one of her
books.

Ravoire School Camp
The children from Years 3, 4 and 5 had a great week at Ravoire. The centre we stayed in was fantastic and the
children all took part in many different activities. The day times were very busy, the children discovered the
local area through walks 'The Four au Pain' and a Parcours Vita which started right beside the centre. They also enjoyed going to the Grand Saint Bernard
Dog Museum in Martigny and they all had a really fun
time at the outside swimming pool. The evenings were also busy, with the Bingo night,
writing their post cards for you and playing board
games together.

End of Year School Trip for years 4 and 5
Years 4 and 5 went to the Labyrinthe Adventure for their Course d'ecole. They set off by bus and they all
really enjoyed trying to find their way through the maze, as well as trying to find all of the clues on their way
round. When they did get to the end they had great fun trying out all of the bizarre bikes and playing in the
park areas. They Wooden Games were also a huge success. We all had a picnic lunch before taking the bus
back again. It was a lovely way to spend the end of the school year.

5H: Le récit fantastique

Year 5 Science
Year 5 have been studying the topic of FORCES this term and this
involved lots of scientific investigations.
Here are some pictures of some of the class using Forcemeters which
can also be called Newtonmeters.
The children used the Forcemeters to measure how much force was
needed to pull an object of their choice, over different types of
surfaces. This allowed them to see how Friction works.

Le boulier Chinois 6H
Le vocabulaire du boulier chinois
Voici un boulier en position de repos : aucune boule n'est
"activée", c'est le zéro.
La première colonne de droite représente les unités, la deuxième
les dizaines, la troisième les centaines...
Les unaires sont les boules inférieures. Lorsqu’elles sont collées à la barre transversale (on dit qu’elles sont
activées), elles valent chacune 1.
Les quinaires, les boules supérieures, valent 5.
« Activer une boule » signifie déplacer cette boule contre la barre transversale.
« Désactiver une boule » signifie l'en éloigner.
Les nombres s'écrivent habituellement de gauche à droite.
Le nombre inscrit sur le boulier est donc 1972.
Les types de bouliers
Il existe plusieurs types de bouliers, correspondant à des époques et des pays
différents.
Actuellement, on trouve principalement des bouliers russes, chinois
et japonais. Les plus utilisés sont les bouliers
chinois et japonais :

Les fonctions du boulier
Les bouliers permettent d’effectuer le calcul des opérations
élémentaires : additions, soustractions, multiplications et divisions.
L’historique du boulier
Cet instrument était utilisé par des peuples très largement séparés
comme les Etrusques (peuple du nord de l’Italie), les Grecs, les
Egyptiens, les Chinois et les Mexicains et l’on peut penser qu’il a été
inventé indépendamment dans différents endroits.
L’utilisation contemporaine du boulier
Il est surprenant de remarquer, à l’ère de la calculatrice électronique, la
grande importance que conserve cet instrument de calcul dans toute
l’Asie.
Il n’est pas rare de voir des commerçants russes ou asiatiques
effectuer un calcul à l’aide d’une calculatrice et en vérifier le résultat à
l’aide du boulier.
Dans des mains expertes, celui-ci est d’une redoutable efficacité. En
1945, un match opposant un comptable japonais muni d’un « soroban »
et un opérateur de calculatrice électrique (Matsuzaki contre Woods)
fut gagné par le « soroban » par un score de 4 à 1.

La fabrication d’un boulier
Ce n’est pas toujours facile de trouver un boulier dans le commerce… Alors nous avons utilisé
des couvercles de cartons à chaussures.
Avec un gros poinçon, nous avons percé les trous sur les bords
extérieurs...2 trous pour chaque colonne sur les côtés (longueur).
Ensuite, avec un fil de scoubidou, nous avons passé dans les trous
et dans les perles (7 perles pour chaque colonne).
Nous avons d’abord fait les colonnes sans nous occuper de la
séparation (barre centrale).
Après, en séparant les perles du haut et du bas, nous avons
déterminé l'endroit où percer les 2 trous pour la séparation
centrale. Nous avons fait la séparation horizontale en passant le
fil autour de chaque colonne !
Voilà le boulier terminé ! Nous pouvons commencer à représenter des nombres et à calculer.

The Greek myths from year 6
As part of our study of the Ancient Greeks, Year 6 have written their own Greek myths. Below is an extract
from each story.
Pegasus went into the room and saw two dogs. He took them because he thought
it would make Athena very happy. When he came back Athena was crying because
she was so happy to see Pegasus back. He gave her the treasure and the key and
then said `Here you are your majesty. I have brought you two dogs because I
know you love those animals ´

Suddenly Perseus remarked a shiny diamond in the mouth of one of Medusa’s
snake hairs. Unexpectedly Medusa noticed Perseus’s presence. She stormed in
front of him, her big snake tail wiggling.Perseus hid behind a pole.At any moment
Medusa could kill him.

When it was night time Jason woke up.He was trying to find a way out. But just
then a soldier came in and said ‘don’t worry I will free you but you will have to help
me too ok ?`Jason agreed. So the soldier said ‘great you will have to find the
poison of life for me . Please could you do that for me?’

Chiron sailed home and saw hundreds of Griffons going to an island. He followed
them and saw a volcano. He had just arrived on the island when a Sphinx asked him
a question. Chiron knew the answer. It was the right answer. He went in the cave
and saw a Cyclops.

Hadesposid went to see Percy and gave him a challenge because he was strong and
he was not scared of anything. Percy had to bring the heads back to the
Underworld so that nobody could find them again.

Just then Priam saw the secret door. He swam to it and opened it and closed it
before the water came in. Then he walked quietly, otherwise the monster
would poison him. He ran on top of the traps. He saw a big long hole in the top.
He decided to look and see if the golden key was there.

in his gigantic temple in Héraklion. He ruled Crete with the Stick of Truth. If you
have the Stick of Truth you are the most powerful man in the world.

After miles of traveling, Lena reached the Death Village. All she could see was
misery. Lena had to be extremely careful where she stepped because on the floor
there were gigantic holes that spat fire at you. Ahead there was an archway.
Above the archway a black bat was floating. Lena passed the archway and spotted
the fierce Hippogriff.

In the volcano lived the Minotaur. He was mean and scary. Hades was the god of the
Underworld. He was always angry. Persephone lived in nature. She loved to smell the
flowers and to hear the birds singing.

the gate she remembered there was a force-field to scan you to see if you were a
god or a goddess. So she disguised herself as Aphrodite. She went through the gate

Thousands of years ago, when technology didn’t exist a legend named Beo came into our
world. He grew up in Athens and believed in a god named Beobeoli. When he was between
ten and fifteen he wanted to go to fight but he didn't live in Sparta. At age fifteen he
was bored with school and he wanted to fight!

Before the world was as it is now, on the big island of Skyros everyone was poor.
There was only one famous blacksmith called “Hector’’. He had to work all night
and all day. Every day he earned twenty golden coins and now he had twenty billion
golden coins. One day, he closed his shop and went to see Apollo, the God of Music.
Hector asked if he could go on a big challenge. Apollo said “of course you can’’.
The Best Hero in Town by Lucas.
When he got to the top of the stairs he saw something green pass very quickly. He
remembered that he had a trap at the end of the stairs and the Blobolo ran into the trap.
Clap Clop the Blobolo was trapped. “Yes” said Jason “now I’m going to kill the Blobolo.”He ran
down the stairs.

As he continued his journey, one of his men said “Land!” It was a jungle with a big
mountain in the middle. The dragon lived in a cave on the mountain. They slept on the
ship and the next day they walked through the jungle.

Before the world was as it is now there was a nice beautiful big field and in this field
lived Athena. Athena had golden hair, a nice blue dress and beautiful shoes. Starlight
the Godess of the Rain gave Athena two challenges. The first challenge was to kill the
Grass Serpent. The second challenge was to take five heads of the Chimara who had
ten heads.

A long time ago, before the world was very old, a girl called Cassandra was trotting
in the woods when she saw a cloud closing in on her. She ran away from the cloud. A
very pretty person was on it and said “I am a goddess called Persephondra and I
have summoned you for an adventure. In return I will give you magic powers”. So
Cassandra agreed.

Finale Cantonale UBSKidsCup,
Suite à nos joutes sportives, plusieurs élèves ont été sélectionnés pour participer à la finale cantonale qui a eu
lieu dimanche 29 juin dernier.
Un grand bravo aux éèves sélectionné : Santiago (4H), Louise (4H), Thomas (4H), Ethan (4H), Elise (4H) et
Samuel (6H). Tous n’ont pas pu venir défendre leur chance, la sélection a été annoncée très tard… Néanmoins, Samuel, Thomas et Santiago sont allés se mesurer aux autres enfants sélectionnés, tout cela sous le
coaching de leurs parents mais également d’Isabelle.
Un grand bravo à tous !
